I've been very interested in installing wire wheels on my GN-1 and Pietenpol (Frankenstein) and haven't been able to see any examples of actual wire wheels and hubs in my part of Texas. Such is the life of a retired pilot with 28,000+ hours in his numerous logbooks... always ready for a trip I suppose. At this juncture, we look forward to seeing everyone at both Tick Hill Field and Broadhead. Pop will study the hubs and I bet he will try and make a set on his lathe when we get home. They are just under 1 meg each. If you can handle them I'll send them to you directly. Back in the Old BPA newsletter days a description/plans for making them was in the newsletter as built by Howard Henderson. Maybe there is still something on it in the archives. Its basically a 6"+ piece of 2" , .125 wall , 4130 tubing with a couple of 4130 12 or 13ga sheet discs 4"dia. welded on the tube. (Note , I made mine about 7" for the addition of a brake drum. Drill the discs for the number of holes needed to match what ever motorcycle rims you want to use. I happened to get 21" aluminum alloy rims with 40 spokes. SOme are 36. You can get the spokes cut to your specs from Buchanan's in California. Bronze 'oilite bearings to fit the axle you use, (I used 1.5" dia.) are press fitted into the hub tubes; thats all there is to it. Go for it!! I'm a newbie on the list. I am building a steel tube fuselage and "end spinach" aircamper with a subaru ea-81 engine. I would guess that I am about 1/3rd done, but that is pretty hard to tell. My question is about the Broadhead gathering. I haven't found any concrete details anywhere, and I need to know a) when is it? b) do I need to advance register? c) will I need to pay admission? d) are there any other things that I should know? I intend to attend, along with a camera and notepad. -Don Morris ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 08:43:37 PM PST US From: "Jim Markle" Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Tell me about Broadhead --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Jim Markle" > My question is about the Broadhead gathering. Nope > c) will I need to pay admission? Nope, but when you see what the Brodhead EAA Chapter provides you'll want to "pitch in"..... > d) are there any other things that I should know? Be prepared to take 3 times as many pictures as you expect.....There will be a lot of Pietenpol Air Campers and maybe a Scout or two......You'll maybe get a ride in a Pietenpol.....You'll see and hear a lot of them flying around.....You'll likely see an Air Camper Bernard himself built.....You'll see things you'll wish later in the building process that you had taken pictures of.....You'll meet some of the nicest people..... It's great.... JM > > I intend to attend, along with a camera and notepad. > > -Don Morris >
