Pietenpol and GN-1 for sale and to be listed on Bay after Oshkosh.
The Pietenpol (N1195P) was built in 1998, signed off by Atlanta FSDO but
never flown. Please see Buckeye Pietenpol Website about this airplane. The
original ad is still intact (dated 2-28-03) and was posted by the builder, Robert
Linton of Mineral Bluff, GA.
This airplane was never truly airworthy because when I got it home, I found a
few defects concerning the construction. My inspection resulted in removing
all of the fabric from the fuselage and wings. There are no gussets inside the
fuselage in the tailcone but this can be fixed. In addition, the builder
didn't prime or paint any of the metal parts inside the center section, wings and
fuselage (don't ask me why...) Some of the metal parts in the wings holding
compression struts need to be rebuilt, not do to rust, but to make them safer.
A
plywood section along the bottom in the tailcone needs to be replaced
because of delamination from water damage. I think the plywood would be an easy
fix.
I think the woodwork on the wings is good and it appears that someone else
may have actually built the ribs and spars. This airplane has a wing tank in the
center section and a fuselage tank. Both are fiberglass, but the fuselage
tank leaks. The builder ran a copper tube into the main tank from the wing tank
and at this juncture, the copper turns easily in the tank. It needs to be
rebuilt, an easy task if you have fiberglass experience. Also, the builder didn't
use any turnbuckles on many of the wires and I'd suggest that the wires in the
cabane area are too small and need to be replaced.
I am keeping the engine and a few small items from the panel and the primer.
I would further advise that all metal parts need to be sand blasted, primed
and painted because of rust issues. The builder didn't use any primer on any
metal parts. I have sand blasted the motor mount and cabanes and had them powder
coated Bahama Blue. These parts now look very nice.
The Pietenpol (fuselage and wings) might be trailered to Broadhead so
interested parties can inspect the project and make a determination as to suitability.
The GN-1 project is an 80% completed fuselage and it is so fine, I suspect it
was built by a professional cabinet maker! The original ad for this is also
posted on the Buckeye Pietenpol Website and I purchased this from D.J. Vegh
about 4 months ago. All the wood is available to complete this airplane and
nearly all the ribs are finished. D.J. Vegh built the ribs and he is very
fastidious. The sale includes D.J.'s original rib jig and his laser cut metal plates.
The fuselage is mounted on J3-Cub gear legs and includes a J3-Cub fuselage gas
tank and tail wheel. I can provide more details about the GN-1 later.

This is a new airstrip since December. Dirt work was completed in February this
year. We have been blessed with a lot of rain this year which has helped our
turf off to a good start. About two weeks ago...I was able to fly the Taylorcraft
in and out within 24 hours of a 3 inch rain.

Sterling--
It doesn't sound like you are Pietenpol poor these days, thats for sure. But if
you are looking to find a good solid airplane to be flying soon and at a good
price... I recommend you take a look at Morris Norwood's GN-1 for sale nearby
here in Hewitt, TX. It is a GN1 built in 1986 with a Continental A65. See attached
pic. It has a little over 300 hours on it. Engine is low time. Currently
LH wing is removed for wingtip & leading edge repairs due to taxi-hangar
incident. The spar was not damaged. Mr. Norwood is asking $7000.00.
Lon and I could help you make these repairs here in our shop and allow you to fly
it home within just a few weeks. Mr. Norwood is planning to attend at Tick
Hill this weekend. Perhaps you can ride over and look at the airplane with him
(about 30 minute drive from Tick Hill).
If I didn't have 6 kids to feed and clothe, I would buy it and fly it all summer...
then take it down this winter for some changes to meet my personal preference.
I would add cub-style cowling and repaint the fabric. Its a good airplane.

Douwe,
I sloshed my Pietenpol fuel tank in 1985, thinking this was a good idea. About
15 years later I had to build a new tank because the sloshing sealer had deteriorated
and bits of it were floating around in the gasoline. Not a good situation!!
Pressure steam cleaning didn't remove the sealer, and only made the situation
worse.
Perhaps it would have been OK with 80/87 had this fuel remained on the market.
Alas, I had to switch to autogas and that may have been a factor. I dunno.
In the meantime I, like Chris, don't recommend sloshing and I won't do it again.

I've been off the list for a while but am hoping the upcoming trip to Brodhead
will be what it takes to get me back in the game. Too many other projects have
taken priority this summer.
Does Brodhead have showers and bathrooms? I went last year but only for a couple
hours while on the way to Oshkosh. Looking forward to spending the weekend
there. Anyone planning a trip to Mckormick's Lumber in Madison while at Brodhead?
I may go over and pick up some wing spar material.
