      Chris,
Thanks for the long awaited news. Really sounds too good to be true. It's
about what I should have expected coming through a month AFTER I passed 41CC on

to better hands. Seems like I've always ended up sucking hind tit. Probably
because of the compliments I've given the beauros and their cousin 3, 4, and 5

letter organizations. I do want to publicly apologize to the FAA, EAA, AOPA for

the lack of faith and respect I've shown these last few years. Impatience is
naughty thing. Seems like I have never used much.
Anyway Chris, thanks again for thinking of me in relation to Sport Pilot. I
hope this will inspire me to go to the shop and get busier on 311CC. Y'all have

      a good time at Brodhead.
      Corky

Everyone: Thanks for the great response! I can tell I've chosen the
right design, not only because of its great looks and other qualities,
but because it has a great group of builders willing to help folks like
me. Several builders have contacted me on the side to offer support and
the opportunity to look at their projects. A newbie like myself cannot
      ask for more than that.

DJ: Your site was the first I read from front to back. Very
informative and easy to read -thanks for taking the time to put it on
the web for the rest of us. As far as party spots here at Rucker? We
do manage to have a good time now and then, but mostly my head is buried
      squarely in the books.

Don Morris: Thanks for the advice on buying a partially completed
project. I'm sure I could save a ton of money but I think I'm going to
stick with building everything myself. The building process is as much
of the destination for me as the flying and I really look forward to the
day when I can point to my Piet and know every part of it is mine.
However, after I've got 500 hours into the project, I may change my
mind. But, for the moment, I'm feeling pretty idealistic. :>

Don Hicks: I'll contact you off list. Thanks!

I don't know about McCormack's Lumber from Madison. I purchased my lumber in large
peices and cut it up myself, also. It was supposedly aircraft grade spruce,
but when I got it home and planed it, my runout limits exceded the prescribed
15:1 in a few places. I wished that I had spent a *little* bit more and gottten
      some higher quality spruce.

      >>>>>>I bought mine from mccormicks and was very happy with it. run out in certain
spots? certainly ....but not a problem, pick out the best pieces for spars
and longerons, and use the rest for all of the short pieces that you need.

      Dear Gang,
Well, ol' Chuck emailed early this morning to say that he was about 2 hours
from leaving Wichita for his "Tour America". Who would have ever guessed he'd

have a tailwind on his way to Texas. Northers are unheard of for July in
Texas. I understand he's aiming for Kitty Hawk airport north of Plano today...

then on southward to our place at Tick Hill tomorrow. I heard he may be joined

in Plano by Mike King in his GN1 for the trip to Central Texas. We are
looking forward to having you, Chuck and others for the big hamburger cookout
tomororw evening. Leann already has the good sheets on the fold-out couch for
      you.
On Monday...my father-in-law are planning to escort Chuck in the '39
Taylorcraft for a leg or so on his trip Northeasterly toward Corky's place from
      here.
Wish we could go all the way to Broadhead. Maybe next year.

Well, Chuck's almost on his way....on the phone with him now....4:45pm.....he's
going to try to do at least a copule hours tonite and finish it off tomorrow
      morning.....

He's running a bit late....he can still make it to Tick Hill tomorrow just without
the stop in Plano this evening...oh well....

I figure his timing will be just about right so we can leave home about the time
he flys thru the Dallas area tomorrow and get there about the same time (well,
I'll probably have to drive a bit UNDER the speed limit but that's ok....)

| Subject: | Using a VW engine in a Pietenpol |

--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Don Mosher <docshop@tds.net>

In the Spring 2004 issue of Sport Aviation Association's To Fly magazine,
there is an article with photos titled "A Pair of 'Grassroots' Engines for
Your Homebuilt." The article points out that there are two engine types
that seem to be emerging as automobile conversions (read that as
"affordable") that can power the homebuilts that need 70 to 100 hp. "For
this article, where we are comparing 70-100 hp automobile conversion kits,
we have chosen kits from three different suppliers. Great Plains and
AeroConversions each provide a modernized Volkswagen engine, while William
Wynne provides a modernized General Motors Corvair engine."

Each of the VW-based engines provide something like 75 hp, and the Corvair
provides 100 hp. Take your choise.

It is very true that the earlier VW engines did not provide the reliable
power needed for a high drag Pietenpol airplane. Those old VWs turned out
doubtful horsepower and had some bad features, such as a tendency to crack
crankshafts in flight. The new 2004 conversion kits from either Steve
Bennett (Great Plains) or John Monnett (AeroVee) provide at least 75 hp
(dynamometer tested) and are far more reliable than the earlier engine from
the old Bug or the Love Vans, although they did great things in their day
      (best we had).

      Great Plains www.greatplainsas.com
      AeroVee www.aeroconversions.com

The old adage that "you should never try to power a Piet with a VW
conversion" no longer holds true. The 2004 engine kits that I have
referenced are quite different from the old style. Both, however, to
fulfill the promise of reliable power must be built to the conversion kit
      manuals TO THE LETTER.

William Wynne's Corvair conversion kit looks attractive at a weight penalty
to achieve it's 100 hp , and it can be built for less money than the two
VW-based kits. There are a number of Corvair-powered Piets, since
      1963. www.flycorvair.com

Any of the three can do the job.

John Monnett's test stand (he uses it for the two different Jabiru engines
and the AeroVee conversion) now has an integral dynamometer, so he knows
exactly what the power output is from any AeroVee engines built up here in
Oshkosh. I know Steve Bennett at Great Plains also has access to such a
test stand. On the Pietenpol, anyone can tell you that more hp is
better. The Ford, turning at a slow rpm and putting out a low hp, turns
that low hp into excellent thrust, and thus can adequately (?) power the Piet.

You pays your money - you takes your choice.

Randy Bruce (aka: Capt. Buck Naked) has designed a fantastic 75th anniversary T-shirt
and will have them at the reunion. He has slowed down on his Piet the past
year so I'm hoping all the activity during the anniversary will spur him on
      to get his finished up.

I wrapped up the list of things that needed to be done for the trip next week.
It's all done except for throwing a bag of clothes in the front 'pit and heading
out!! The anticipation of the trip to Brodhead never wears thin. I would have
left already but my boss probably wouldn't understand. I can't wait for retirement!

I'm going to leave here (Cincinnati, OH) early Tuesday morning and spend a night
or two at friendly little airports that have been hospitable in years past.
      Can't wait!!!

      See Y'all at C37................

You know, with 20-20 hindsight, it's suddenly crystal clear why Sport Pilot
took so danged long to come out... they wanted to wait for the big
anniversary of the original "sport pilot" plane! :)
