Hey Ed, Good to see you posting on the list again. For my nose fuel tank
I only put in one drain valve and then let the gascolater catch the water
(if you should get any) at the bottom of the firewall. When I park
outside overnight I put a plastic spray can lid over my fuel filler neck so
no dew or rain gets in thru the wire/cork float. Glad to hear you have
survived the clutches of giving a female too much attention and not enough
to your project:)

Terry,
Mr. Ray Hegy of Hegy Propellers and the folks at Sensenich wooden
propellers
in Plant City, Florida said based on the A-80 engine, they
recommended a 72x42.
The 69x39 metal prop on it now was installed by the third owner
because he
broke the 72x42 wooden one and replaced it with one he already
had.
From what I gather, the 69" prop on it now is not putting out the
thrust a longer
72" prop would.
Maybe some other guys out there with A-80 engines have some good
input
as well.
Thanks Terry and again, what a great time at your place at Tick
Hill. We have
to do it again.

Mike...
One thing to keep in mind is that the A-80 was designed to get
its 80 hp at 2700 rpm. If you put that longer prop with 42
pitch...it will probably not turn up enough RPMs to make 80 hp.
My guess is that it will probably only make about 2300 rpm static
with the 72-42. You'll get the best takeoff performance from a
prop that will allow the engine make near the 2700 RPM as rated.

Thanks Mike...I have another question for you ...I'm close to bolting in my
rudder pedals and putting in my firewall...but haveing live controls in a
cockpit with non-pilot type passengers sounds like a good way to get
dead....Didn't I hear somewhere that you made your rudder pedals so that you
could easily disconnect and reconnect them??? If so could you give me some
idea of how you did it.....Thanks Ed

Quick Answers to Sport Pilot Questions
Here is a collection of answers to some of the more common Sport Pilot
questions received this week at EAA headquarters.
Gross weight 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms)
Floatplanes 1,430 (650 kilograms)
Maximum Full Power Speed 120 knots (138 mph)

Fixed Prop - may be ground adjustable
Fixed Gear - amphibians allowed "repositionable" gear
Two- Place - pilot and one passenger
Day VFR
Driver's License Medical Approved - however, if you have received a letter
with the word "denied" from FAA, not from your doctor, you must get a
one-time special issuance or FAA authorization =B7 even if you have been
denied in the past, you can try again for special issuance (medicines have
changed, for example) =B7 more on this as EAA continues to analyze the new rule.
Owner Maintenance Approved on ELSAs - no changes - if you are operating an
Amateur-Built or Standard category as an LSA, maintenance remains as it was
without change.
No Recertification of aircraft required or permitted (this means
ultralights are converted to ELSAs; all other aircraft certification and
maintenance remain the same).

Ed--- when I give rides I have the option of removing the front control
stick but I only really do that when I fly solos and have my baggage sack
in the front. I like letting all my passengers take the controls when we
get to cruise. I do however let them know that they need to keep their
feet back of the front ash cross member on the floor and to not kick the
braided fuel line hose and fuel valve area. I also tell them to lean
towards the right side of the cockpit because many a Piet pilot has been
surprised in the air or on the ground by a "mystical unexplained sudden
throttle movement or frozen throttle" !!!!! The passengers can bump your
front throttle and not even know they did it. Another fix is when (and I
heard this from another Piet pilot) the passenger is so big or leaning to
the left on final that his or her body or arm prevents you from moving the
throttle at all !!!!!!!!! It happened to a guy I know in flight and he
had no intercom to tell the passenger to get off the throttle. The pilot
had to cut the ignition intermittently to descend and land for gosh sakes !

Corky-- from what I can tell by the gross weights of these two planes they
should conform to the new rules unless they are the advanced versions like
a Super Cub or an all electric 100 hp Champ, etc. The basic Champ and Cub
seem to fall right in line with the specs they have provided.

Yankee boy,
Several corrections on your last transmission. It is 311CC, not 31CC. And ole
Corky was NOT a WWII pilot. He was a gift to the Infantry from Fort Benning
to Manila. Sorry. When they called him up again for Korea he decided to fly
with the new Army Aviation. That's how it started and almost ended. This rebel

Question: If we violate some FAR do they pull our driver's licence? How would
they know from a driver's licence if the FAA has denied us a medical.
Having dealt with the FAA for a long time, I give them lots of credit for
being lazy and inept. Never underestimate their ability to make life miserable
if
they take a notion though. Witness Bob Hoover.

Hello all. I am having some problems figuring out the control system. What holds
the torque tube down at the front and rear of the plane that allows it to
rotate. Also what size tubing and pulleys would you recommend. The print calls
for 20 Gage steel pipe.
Thanks for your help.

Pieters and interested friends,
Chuck called at 10:15 CDT from Ironton, Mo. Said he had a belly full of
steak, corn and potatoes. Jon Jones who lives in Ironton but works in Farmington
met Chuck at Farmington airport on landing. Jon is hosting Chuck tonight. Chuck
said it was another beautiful flight. Sometimes his GPS indicated a speed in
knots faster than his air speed in the plane. Said he climbed 300 ft with
throttle pulled and nose down. He must have been on a roller coaster. Weather is
not looking favorable for tomorrow so he has no definite plans. His cell # is

Yeah but the A-80 engine does make more power at all RPMs because the compression
is higher and the carb venturi and jets are a little bigger, most other things
being equal. The important think to note is that the W72CK42 prop as typically
used on the Taylorcraft, Cub, Champ, Chief. etc. that are powered by the
A-65 is limited to 65 hp and 2350 or so RPM. To say again the W72CK42 is limited
to 65 hp. The prop maker would have to know the hp/rpms involved so the
proper wood cantilevered beam structure is present in the propeller. This is
all per the sensenich type certificate data page you can find where airplane type
certificate data sheets are found on the faa website.
My W76CK42 prop is good to 90 hp. My W70DK42 is good to 80 hp. There are RPM
limits that come with these but I forget what they are except that they correspond
with the RPM limits of the appropriate A and/or C series continentals of
those hps.

Mike...
One thing to keep in mind is that the A-80 was designed to get its 80 hp at 2700
rpm. If you put that longer prop with 42 pitch...it will probably not turn
up enough RPMs to make 80 hp. My guess is that it will probably only make about
2300 rpm static with the 72-42. You'll get the best takeoff performance
from a prop that will allow the engine make near the 2700 RPM as rated.

James asked:
Q: What holds the torque tube down at the front and rear of the plane that allows
it to rotate.
A: Look at Drawing No.4 of the plans (1934 version), over in the Control Stick
Details (top left-hand side) it shows a drawing of the bearing and collars that
are used in the front and back. The back doesn't have a collar. Sometimes
you will see reference to people needing a shim under the front bearing to get
it to line up. This is because some of us forget to put the slope in the mounting
plate as is shown in the drawing. I made it flat and cut a shim to glue
under it. Easier to weld that way.
Q: Also what size tubing and pulleys would you recommend
A: Plans say 7/8" OD 20 ga. I used 7/8"OD 0.035 Wall 4130. NOTE: Make sure your
collar and bearing tubing's ID is 7/8". This wall thickness may be a bit light
but it's the same as others use. Pulleys are 2" (It calls for 2" Formica
pulleys on the Rear View of Rear Torque Tube Bearing drawing (same sheet, same
place). Some people don't like this small of pulley but it seems to work ok.
Good luck
