The 69x39 metal prop on it now was installed by the third owner because he broke the 72x42 wooden one and replaced it with one he already had. From what I gather, the 69" prop on it now is not putting out the thrust a longer 72" prop would. Maybe some other guys out there with A-80 engines have some good input as well. Thanks Terry and again, what a great time at your place at Tick Hill. We have to do it again. One thing to keep in mind is that the A-80 was designed to get its 80 hp at 2700 rpm. If you put that longer prop with 42 pitch...it will probably not turn up enough RPMs to make 80 hp. My guess is that it will probably only make about 2300 rpm static with the 72-42. You'll get the best takeoff performance from a prop that will allow the engine make near the 2700 RPM as rated. Corky ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 08:23:27 AM PST US From: Michael D Cuy Subject: Pietenpol-List: removable control stick --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Michael D Cuy Ed--- when I give rides I have the option of removing the front control stick but I only really do that when I fly solos and have my baggage sack in the front. I like letting all my passengers take the controls when we get to cruise. I do however let them know that they need to keep their feet back of the front ash cross member on the floor and to not kick the braided fuel line hose and fuel valve area. I also tell them to lean towards the right side of the cockpit because many a Piet pilot has been surprised in the air or on the ground by a "mystical unexplained sudden throttle movement or frozen throttle" !!!!! The passengers can bump your front throttle and not even know they did it. Another fix is when (and I heard this from another Piet pilot) the passenger is so big or leaning to the left on final that his or her body or arm prevents you from moving the throttle at all !!!!!!!!! It happened to a guy I know in flight and he had no intercom to tell the passenger to get off the throttle. The pilot had to cut the ignition intermittently to descend and land for gosh sakes ! The important think to note is that the W72CK42 prop as typically used on the Taylorcraft, Cub, Champ, Chief. etc. that are powered by the A-65 is limited to 65 hp and 2350 or so RPM. To say again the W72CK42 is limited to 65 hp. The prop maker would have to know the hp/rpms involved so the proper wood cantilevered beam structure is present in the propeller. This is all per the sensenich type certificate data page you can find where airplane type certificate data sheets are found on the faa website. My W76CK42 prop is good to 90 hp. My W70DK42 is good to 80 hp. There are RPM limits that come with these but I forget what they are except that they correspond with the RPM limits of the appropriate A and/or C series continentals of those hps. chris bobka ----- Original Message ----- From: BARNSTMR@aol.com To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Sent: Tuesday, July 20, 2004 9:23 PM Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Insurance Mike... A: Look at Drawing No.4 of the plans (1934 version), over in the Control Stick Details (top left-hand side) it shows a drawing of the bearing and collars that are used in the front and back. The back doesn't have a collar. Sometimes you will see reference to people needing a shim under the front bearing to get it to line up. This is because some of us forget to put the slope in the mounting plate as is shown in the drawing. I made it flat and cut a shim to glue under it. Easier to weld that way. Q: Also what size tubing and pulleys would you recommend A: Plans say 7/8" OD 20 ga. I used 7/8"OD 0.035 Wall 4130. NOTE: Make sure your collar and bearing tubing's ID is 7/8". This wall thickness may be a bit light but it's the same as others use. Pulleys are 2" (It calls for 2" Formica pulleys on the Rear View of Rear Torque Tube Bearing drawing (same sheet, same place). Some people don't like this small of pulley but it seems to work ok. Good luck Chris T.
