Well I should be leaving Kimball Nebraska headed for Morning Star field
this morning, but I'm still at home. I regret to say that I'm going to
have to give up my anniversary trip to Brodhead this year. There is a
bright side however, we had a house for sale and we are closing on the
opening day of Brodhead. This is a blessing since two houses down there
is an identical house that has been on the market for over a year. I
hope you all have a great time, I can't wait to see pictures. If anyone
has a side interest in Stinsons, this year they are having a mass flyin
to Oshkosh on Monday, I'm going to miss too. This is one of those
bittersweet disappointments. Regarding the 75 anniv. hats, for some
reason they didn't come back from the graphic shop in time either. I'll
announce here with pictures.
Someone enjoy an extra helping of corn and brats for me.....

Howdy, folks;
Just an inquiry as to where you pilots have found good cloth flying helmets.
I see the ones that Aircraft Spruce has (all kinds)- the simple summer
white "canvas" or khaki type are under $30 (not the type for headset).
Like Mike C., I plan to fly mostly "NORDO and proud of it" so don't need the
helmet with provision for David Clarks. Thanks for any help you guys might
have on this.
PS- Latest word from Charlie Avaritt, my ferry pilot and caretaker of 41CC
at the moment, is that he has finally figured out how to fold and unfold
people into the front cockpit ;o) I'll have to send him Mike's video so he
can see the complete sequence required for assisting females into position

Javier Cruz of Mexico has just joined our most prestigious organization. This
is very good news since Javier actually lives in the country where Corona
comes from! At this juncture, I only know that Javier is contemplating a Piet
project, but that is almost insignificant to the fact that he may be in position
to donate massive quantities of Corona, as well as making really important
contributions to our club culture. Let's all give him a big "Viva Javier...
bienvenidos hombre."
MUY IMPORTANTE NEWS...
Dateline knot-2-shabby airport The results of TACO OFFICERs elections
By unanimous vote, Terry Bowden has been elected to serve a one year (or
longer) term as our Big Burrito (which loosely translated from Spanish means El
Presedente or something like that.)
Mike King (King of Combate) has been elected to the post of Grande Chalupa.
(Which in border Spanish means Sergeant at Arms.)
Sterling Brooks has been elected to the position of Salsa Loco. (In Spanish
meaning the crazy guy who spices up our newsletter and lies/exagerates or
embellishes everything the TACOs do ... (Hey, this is Texas, we tend to brag and
fib about stuff down here.)
Doyle Combs has been elected "Chief Padre" (in Spanish meaning Chaplain) and
our spiritual leader and is in charge of saying the blessing, if we ever meet
again and have a formal meal. (Note, beer drinking members must refrain and
restrain themselves when in the presence of Chief Padre... Go drink behind a
tree for goodness sake or pour your beer into an empty Dr. Pepper can so Chief
Padre doesn't catch you in the act.) Doyle is also in charge of speaking to the
Man upstairs making sure that each maiden, first-time-flight of an air camper
goes well. Doyle will also offer prayer for any TACO who overhauls their own
airplane engine.
Hank Styne and partner Chuck Jackson have been elected Transportation Czars.
We have no idea what this position is, it just sounds really cool.
Tom Travis has been elected Wake Turbulence Director and Indian Guide. We
suspect that the Indian guide honor is because he flies an airplane with a forked
tail. The wake turbulence honor is because his Bonanza could probably make a
Pietenpol bounce around if he passed over and in front of an air camper.
Morris Norwood is now our Director of Taxiways and Official Public Affairs
Officer.
Chuck Gantzer is our official Generalisimo Adventurer and Yell Leader and
Chief Air Polluter.
Jim Markle was voted in as our Vapor Trail Coordinator, TFR Advisor and
Newsletter Proof Reader. (If something is mispelled, balme it on Markel!)
Roy Brooks (my dad) has been elected to the post of Chief Taildragger
Instuctor Pilot and 3 Point Advisor. I suspect my soon-to-be 85 year old dad was
flying long before most of us knew what a propeller was. Roy has also probably
had
more vomit land in his face from teaching Army Air Corp Cadets acrobatics
when the student was sitting in the front seat of a Stearman, than most of us
care to think about during lunch or dinner.
Lon Carr now serves as Chief Engineer of Turf Runways. (Man, you should see
the grass runway that Lon built.)
Chris Hoke is Chief Meteorologist because Terry said he had something to do
with Chuck's tailwind down here. It's very unusual that we get a wind out of
the north down here in July!
Tabulation of votes for our other positions will be announced at a later date
because I have to leave now for a long drive from Central Texas to Broadhead.

Hey Corky,
Sorry I didn't reply to your message last night....After I met Chuck at the
field
I didn't check my mail till late last night (at which point he had already
given
you a call)
We had a good visit, hope we didn't bother him too much. My 6 year old
boy really took a liking to him...ate a lot of things at supper last night
he
wouldn't have normally, just because it was what Chuck was eating.
I unfortunately had to roust him from bed at 7:00 this morning, as I had to
go
to work- he probably wishes he'd opted for the motel!
I didn't get to see him off, as I got a few things to do at work before
vacation
begins next week.
Anyway, I will keep an eye on your running commentary on the
"Chuck Gantzer Great American Pietenpol Tour"
Take care...

Dear TACO Chief Pilot, Helotes, TX District, (ie, Oscar Z)
I got my khaki type canvas helmets thru these
folks: http://www.flightsuits.com/
They sell them w/ or without the holes for headset ear muffs. Enclosed a
photo of one of those women that I had to assist getting in and ouf of the
front seat. One day I flew an 8 year old boy and an 85 year old guy and
both wanted to ride so bad that they found a way to do as I asked them to
get in and out. If not wearing a helmet, have front passenger turn ball
cap backwards or not wear it at all.

TACO members. Being 13 miles east of the border I don't feel eligible for
membership in your exalted, exclusive ranch house gathering. Is this group to be
likened to the former chicken ranch? Y'all have fun.
If you need a secret place to meet away from the ranch and Tick Hill airfield
ole Corky has the place and all it will cost is $1.00. Yes, there is no
trick. Just pay me $1.00 and sign your name and you become the owner of a beautiful
downtown city lot in thriving semi tropical Texas City, Texas where warm
breezes make you think your in a paradise. Matter of fact I'll sell it to anyone
who wants it. You will have to pay a lawyer fee and title transfer and all that
stuff but shouldn't run very much. I know a Mr. Lawyer Man in Texas who would
handle it for you. TACO could pitch a tent and hold their meetings in a cool,
clean, upgrade urban atmosphere. Good fishing, crabbing, boating and swimming
nearby. Anyone interested just e mail me before I commit another offense
against Texas and let it go for taxes.
As I said in the subject line, I'm wanted in Texas for several violations:
Left Texas in favor of Louisiana in 1925
Driving from Houston to Shreveport w/o a drivers license at age 12
Driving in East Texas in a Model T on tractor distellite, without a tail
light after shooting a wood duck and doe out of season.
Breaking the heart of a preacher's daughter in Marshall, Tex in 39.
Broke out of jail in Round Rock in 44. Booked for speeding and drinking ole
rooster and branch water. ( Still can't recall seeing that damn town )
Picked up for vagrancy in Belton after a wild nite in Lorena 44
Breaking up another heart in Paris 45
Failure to pay taxes on Texas City lot.
My conscience hurt me so much all those years that Isabelle and I went back
to Round Rock to settle with the laws and would you believe, they tore that
little old jail down so I feel free again but not free enough to cross you
hallowed border

Corky,
What would be good, IF SOMEONE HAS THE TIME, is to prepare a web
site
dedicated to Chuck's America Air Tour. This site would be a
picture of the U.S.
with ICONS of the cities he has stopped, complete with pictures
and any narratives
for each location.
This way we can keep a visual track of our barnstormer and
accounts of his adventure.
But this will take someone with time on their hands and a
knowledge of putting text
and pictures together on a web site.
Maybe someone will take this project and run with it. I know
Chuck would enjoy
reliving his trip after he gets back.

Group-- looks like from the weather maps that Chuck is going to have to
maybe put down for that rain and front to pass over him soon. Then again
the movement is to the east so he might miss it. The vis. looks to be
about 6 miles in heavy haze and a slight quartering headwind. Once that
front passes they are calling for 72-75 and sunny in Wisconsin for the
entire weekend !
Keep your heat, Corky ! (but could you send us some in February ? Please ?)

great pictures
to add to this project. Chuck might be able to download some
pictures from

I know with your creative talent, the site would be the perfect

Just let us know where you want the pictures sent.

of our meetings. I'm sending you the $1.00 and a Tee Shirt as soon as I get
back from Yankee land.

John,
Wife and I will be flying low in a Suburban and white pop-up. Will
depart Des Moines tomorrow about 0600, I think the drive is about 7
hours. Will have plans with us if anybody needs to refer to them.
Hope to meet you.

Heading out tomorrow about 3:00 PM and flying low in a green old Ford
Ranger. Should arrive about 4:00 PM. Kinda nice to live just a few
miles
away. Be prepared we have had a lot of rain and there be a bumper crop
of
skeeters out there.

Make that TWO bottles of Wild Turkey. However, Texas City could
be our
HOT TACO headquarters and a fly-in should be in the planning.
With the
Texas Gulf of Mexico as the backdrop, cold beer, branch water,
local seafood,
Mexican food and lots of fellowship should bring plenty of us
together for another
great time.
Flying PIETS and GN-1s up and down the coastline (some with smoke
systems)
would be a blast.

Hey, is it possible to be an expatriot member of the HOT TACO? Since I
(nearly) have a Piet flying, and used to live in Texas (I flew my J-3 Cub
out of Oak Grove airport near Fort Worth, and Alvin Intergalactic Airport,
south of Houston), I was wondering if there are any out-of-state chapters
being formed? At least I'm not a yankee like Mike Cuy (I was born and

Davy Crockett was congressman from my home district, before arriving in

Javier Cruz of Mexico has just joined our most prestigious organization.
This is very good news since Javier actually lives in the country where
Corona comes from! At this juncture, I only know that Javier is
contemplating a Piet project, but that is almost insignificant to the fact
that he may be in position to donate massive quantities of Corona, as well
as making really important contributions to our club culture. Let's all
give him a big "Viva Javier... bienvenidos hombre."
MUY IMPORTANTE NEWS...
Dateline knot-2-shabby airport The results of TACO OFFICERs elections
By unanimous vote, Terry Bowden has been elected to serve a one year (or
longer) term as our Big Burrito (which loosely translated from Spanish means
El Presedente or something like that.)
(Hey, this is Texas, we tend to brag
and fib about stuff down here.)
Doyle Combs has been elected "Chief Padre" (in Spanish meaning Chaplain) and
our spiritual leader and is in charge of saying the blessing, if we ever
meet again and have a formal meal. (Note, beer drinking members must refrain
and restrain themselves when in the presence of Chief Padre... Go drink
behind a tree for goodness sake or pour your beer into an empty Dr. Pepper
can so Chief Padre doesn't catch you in the act.) Doyle is also in charge of
speaking to the Man upstairs making sure that each maiden, first-time-flight
of an air camper goes well. Doyle will also offer prayer for any TACO who
overhauls their own airplane engine.
Hank Styne and partner Chuck Jackson have been elected Transportation Czars.
We have no idea what this position is, it just sounds really cool.
Tom Travis has been elected Wake Turbulence Director and Indian Guide. We
suspect that the Indian guide honor is because he flies an airplane with a
forked tail. The wake turbulence honor is because his Bonanza could probably
make a Pietenpol bounce around if he passed over and in front of an air
camper.
I suspect my soon-to-be 85 year old dad
was flying long before most of us knew what a propeller was. Roy has also
probably had more vomit land in his face from teaching Army Air Corp Cadets
acrobatics when the student was sitting in the front seat of a Stearman,
than most of us care to think about during lunch or dinner.
Tabulation of votes for our other positions will be announced at a later
date because I have to leave now for a long drive from Central Texas to
Broadhead.

Corky,
Your support work is Wonderfull, as is the friendship of this list.
I hope we could have similar help when we make our dreamed cross
country from here to Sun & Fun. Very probably next year! Well we
dream about this flight every year since 1987 I joined EAA.
One more time, WE (all in this list) appreciate very much your update
posts, keeps us waiting for the next one. Go Chuck Go!
Note: From here to Oshkosh is always in bad weather danger all the way;
heavy raining season, so is out of question for us, only by airline.
Flying distance from here is almost the same to S&F that to OSH (just a
few hours diference) Have it in my Jeppesen FliteStar program.
Saludos

To the best of my memory
Sat July 17 Left Wishita, Kansas and overnited at Cushing, Ok. Met up with
some jumpers at the airport and spent hours consuming pizza and beer.
Sun July 18 From Cushing to near Dallas for fuel and to Tick Hill near
Temple, Tx.
more beer and barbecue.
Mon July 19 Left Tick Hill around 1500 bound for Bluebird Hill in Keithville
(Shreveport)La More beer and plenty of shrimp with Corky and Isabelle and
Edwin Johnson
Tues July 20 Departed Bluebird Hill at 1400 bound for Arkansas and parts
nawth. Fueled at Arkadelphia, Ark and stretched until dark landing at Mountain,
View, Ark
Wed.July 21 From Mountain View he made Farmington, Mo where he was met and
hosted by Jon Jones.
Thurs July 22 Jon pulled him out early as he had to go to work. Chuck took
off on a nawtherly headed. Called Corky in the afternoon while flying using his
new cell phone. Corky couldn't understand any of the noisy transmission partly
because iof the wind and the fact that he is near stone deaf.
That's as up to date as I can give you. I am expecting a call from him
tonight and as soon as I get the information I will put it on the Piet list
Hope this is what you wanted

To the Learned Ones:
It seems ironic that many of the people waiting for the Sport Pilot License
were pilots who had had a run in with FAA on their medicals. It seems like I
detect a whisper of death with the one clause that states pilots who have
been turned down by FAA must get a one time approval. Why in the world would
anyone think they would issue a special approval when they grounded the
pilots in the first place. They are people who have a job and probably most
of the FAA medical people don't fly and do not understand the passion of
pilots. It seems ironic that what has been waited for in great anticipation
seems to have a dark cloud hovering over that dream of flying again. Does
anyone have any inside knowledge on this matter? Will FAA be more
understanding in this special approval or will they be their same old
selves? Just feel the great excitement I have heard from grounded pilots has
been somewhat shattered.

First of all, I'm new to the Piet community and I've really enjoyed and
appreciated the Pietenpol list e-mails. Thanks to everyone who responded to
my inquiry about using a Revmaster on a Camper. The information was very
helpful. I've decided not to use the Revmaster and to go with a Continental
instead. Tried and true makes more sense.
I'm building a Piet and have the fuse, empennage, landing gear and all of
the ribs complete for my long fuse Camper and I'm about to start the wing.
Other than meeting and talking to Mike C. (thanks for the help Mike) I was
feeling pretty lonesome in the Piet world. But after subscribing to the
Pietenpol-list I do believe there's life out there. I don't know Chuck but I
do envy him his adventure and wish him a great and safe journey.
Incidentally, If anyone needs a zero time Revmaster 2100D I know where you
can get one. And if anyone knows of a good Continental 65hp engine, I'm now
in the market.
Thanks again for all your help guys.

Jake,
Nah, won't take up helicopters cause I can't afford it. But it was a great
experience!
But I do have the ole Piet to fly in just for the price of gas!!!

Walt, Hellicoptors are BAD things....they take you and drop you off at places
where people shoot at you and leave you there. No more rides. But man I love
Piets.

I was due for my BFR in July and went to a female instructor who I've known
for years. She's one of the best. In the back of my mind I always wanted to
fly a helicopter. So after the BFR in her Cub, I got 45 minutes in a Schweitzer
<sp>. It was great! It's amazing what she knows, and how smooth she teaches.
Anybody ever fly a helicopter? Just wanted to say that I did it before the
big dirt nap :

Subject: | Chuck Gantzer update |
Pieters and interested ones.
Chuck called at 9:20 (2120) CDT from his motel in Quincy, Ill. He says he can
spit in the Mississippi River. Jon got him up at 7 this morning but he didn't
take off until noon. Says he is not a morning person. Skirted around St Louis
to the west and landed in Pittsfield, Ill. The old man at the field suggested
he try for Quincy, Ill for the evening. After having been treated like
royalty at Farmington, Mo airport with a no charge hangar stay and hospitality
of
Jon Jones he found Quincy different. They wanted to charge him $40 to hangar his
Piet for the night so he elected to tie it down after determining that a no
hail situation existed. Then no airport courtesy car so he had a 10 mile cab
tab. He's not bitching about it but I am. Let's all remember Quincy.
He said his course was pretty steady today not varying more than 25 to 30 on
his headings. He still is amazed at those thermals when he pulls throttle and
puts his nose down and climbs 3 or 4 hundred feet. Says he has about 6 hrs to
broadhead . His smoke system has ceased to function so tomorrow before take
off he will check the small injector ports into the manifolds which he suspects
has clogged with exhaust carbon. He MUST have smoke for his grand arrival at
Broadhead. His plan is to circle the field several times with smoke then drop
his toilet paper bombs into the center of his smoke circles.
He also told me that flight service warned him to avoid dams and locks on the
Mississippi and military bases. Looks like they are afraid of Piets too.
He seems his jolly and happy self and I can assure you he is having the time
of his life. I told him the entire Piet list was following his Tour of America
and that made him happy

Hooray for Chuck...almost there.
I can't think of a better ambassador for our beloved Piet. Reading Jon
Jones' comments about his 6 year-old boy idolizing our barnstorming hero, ...it
reminded me of my youth when I found the "Marginal Aviation" gang at Blakesburg
AAA fly-in to be the kind of folks I wanted to be like. Forrest Lovely...Alex
Whitmore...and others who flew Pietenpols..... It was guys like that who
hooked on the Piet. I would hang out and offer to clean landing gears and bellies,
hoping for a ride. And believe me...they were willing to oblige.
This past weekend....I was happy seeing my 12-yr-old son Benny following
Chuck around all over. Chuck gave Benny...not just one...but two rides this
weekend. Benny was abord and got to experience first hand the joy of formation
flying....T.P. drops.... fly-bys, and YEEEHAAWs. By the end of his visit...he
had lured my 8-yr-old daughter into the same. She got to do a TP drop of her
own, however not quite as accurate to the Target as Benny.
This world needs more red-blooded American role models like Chuck. Benny
remembers our visits back in 1999 and 2000 to Chucks house in Wichita...when he
was busy carving away on his prop...covering his wing...and laying up his
fiberglass fuel tank...IN HIS HOUSE. And for Benny to see and share in the fruits
of Chuck's hard work and perseverence....makes this hobby worthwhile. I am
sure there are lots of other kids (young and old) out there feeling the same as
me and Benny. This is what it is all about!
