Chuck made it just fine. The Brodhead group awarded Chuck an award for his travels.
There was a HUGE turn out of people. The largest they've ever seen at a Pietenpol
gathering.
16 Pietenpols, several Hatz biplanes, a restored Curtiss Jenny, and the usual other
museum pieces that always seem to show up.
Good weather, good talk by William Wynne, good time....

TACOS unite! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond to this post. I
drove a solid 23 hours from Central Texas to Brodhead and was brain-dead for the
first 20 hours after I arrived. I'm in a motel near O$KO$H ($100 buck$ a
night) and I just now have internet service.
Anyone (Yankees included) needing a " TACO membership/ID Card" can e-mail a
picture to me (a mug shot of you preferable in a leather or cloth flying
helmet) to my broadband address through my website at www.sterlingbrooks.tv. As
soon as I get back, your free "TACO membership/ID Card" (suitable for maybe,
JUST MAYBE sneaking you into aviation events because it looks so darned official)
will be mailed to you in mid August. We will worry about your membership dues
later (bottle of Corona or a box of Velveeta in case you are a member of the
clergy).
After you receive your TACO card (might get you a discount at Taco Bell!)
please take it to KINKOS and have it laminated with a clip on device.
I'll be off list for about a week.

Dave:
You can contact Chunk or wait for my video. I interviewed Chuck and one of
the segments included how he installed his smoke system. My video won't be ready
for a long time because I have a lot more shooting to do, but Chuck is a real
easy-going down to earth guy and smart as a Rhodes Scholar. His system in
neat.
Also Mike Cuy has a system. I haven't seen it but it is different from Chuck's

Count me in, Sterling
I'm a wannabee, with a mostly completed fuselage in my garage in Austin,
Texas, and an A-65 and mostly completed torque tube and control sticks in
Greenville, Texas. I bought an old house a few months back and that's slowed
me down a bit, but not for long. As far as the Corona goes, I'd like to make
the motion that a Shiner Bock (brewed here in the heart of Texas) be
accepted in lieu of.

And may I recommend that TACO members drop in on my Dad, Russ Chambers, any
time they pass through Greenville, Texas? He's got an aircraft parts
business (mostly hardware and Stits these days) located at Majors Field.
It's just a few miles off I-35. He always has three or four homebuilts on
hand and he loves to talk airplane. Call in advance at 903-455-3113 before
you stop by to make sure he's not out flying his "new" 1946 Culver Cadet.

I have membership cards for all the Texas folks who own or are building or
wanting an Air Camper. If you want to join this prestigious group
(membership fee is a bottle of Corona beer at the next meeting, but if you
don't make the next meeting, no problema, we can waiver the fee and send
your card muy pronto anyway.) Send me your snail-mail address as and I'll
put your membership card in the mail to you. We'll figure out the Corona
hand-off some other time.
The new Texas group was kind of formed on Sunday during a moment of
enlightenment when Chuck Gantzer flew his Pietenpol over Terry Bowden's Tick
Hill Air Field. "Wow" us wannabees said, as we gazed up into the sun when
Chuck flew over. (Maybe looking into the Texas sun is what provided the
moment of enLIGHTENment? Regardless, this was a good group of folks to meet
and everyone had a great time. Terry and LeAnn cooked up a great round of
burgers and proved that Texas Hospitality (and Bowden burgers) can't be
beat.
Oh, yes... Our newly formed group will be extending HONORARY membership
cards to folks who reside outside of Texas. For grumpy people (Texans and
non-Texans), we extend ORNERY membership cards. However, Grumpy people need
to be nominated by either an HONORARY member of our prestigious group or a
real Texan. Membership fee for an ORNERY member is a case of Corona.
(Chuck was the first non-Texan indicted in our group, I mean INDUCTED into
our (sorry Chuck) I didn't mean to suggest you ran into trouble with the law
down here. We have room in our organization for everyone, even grumpy folks
and those who actually have been INDICTED.
We hope to be working on some kind of annual event for a Fly In down here
(none of our members know anything about it yet cause I just made it up) in
the Heart Of Texas (HOT as in sweat) Texas Air Camper Organization.
By the way, a blank space on the membership card is suitable for attaching a
picture of your mug in your leather helmet, scarf and goggles, so people
will think you are a real-live barnstormer. We encourage members to laminate
their prestigious membership cards once they arriive. (Remember, the card is
free but bring a Corona to the next meeting so we can properly indict you :)
I mean induct you.
Membership cards will be mailed to y'all if and when I get back from
Wisconsin.

A quick update on Brodhead. Great weather, cool sleeping. Few mosquitos.
Yes, lots of Piets, 6 or 8 Hatz biplanes. And even a Hisso powred
Jenny. The Jenny came in a trailer (18 wheeler) from California, was
assembled at Brodhead, and flown several times before heading off to the
North. Assembly rigging took 4 people 3 days. Lots of wires.
Some of the Piets were from far away places, like John Dilatush (we finally
got to meet this guy, and he's really an inspiration!). On Saturday
afternoon, after a grand entrance with smoke and a TP drop, Chuck
arrived. Yes, he did find his baby oil, and filled his smoke tank for
Sunday. Spent the day carrying people. In fact, missed the rush for the
pork chop dinner on Saturday night because he wanted to carry as many folks
as possible, including my nephew, Ray Mosher, who is still grinning. The
usual Piets were there (by usual, I don't mean to discount them at
all). Grand group of people. On Saturday night, after Chuck finally got
on the ground, he was awarded a citation:
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
On the salubrious occasion of a visit to the annual world's greatest
gathering of Pietenpol-type Airplanes and Pietenpol-type People at
Brodhead, Wisconsin in July of 2004, by an American airman, in the
tradition established by Glenn Curtiss, Cal Rogers, Charles Lindbergh,
Douglas Corrigan, Howard Hughes, and Dick Rutan and Jeanna Yeager -
Pioneers among others who achieved significant flights fulfilling their
personal dreams, we honor
CHUCK GANTZER
who, on July 14, 2004, landed his homebuilt Pietenpol N770CG, at the
Brodhead Airport in Wisconsin, USA.
Mr. Gantzer's visit is part of his Great American Pietenpol Tour, which he
vowed to make "one day" many years ago whilst measuring, cutting, and
gluing strips of spruce wood to build his own Pietenpol airplane.
In recognition of his determination to live at least part of his life's
dream, we award this certificate.
"Gee, Toto, this doesn't look like Kansas!"
Presented by the Brodhead Bunch July 24, 2004
It was announced at supper that this was by far the largest group in the 22
years of the Brodhead get together. It all started with a picnic put
together by Dick Weeden and his wife. There were already something like 3
Piets on the field back then, and several more flew in for the
picnic. Everybody had so much fun that they did it again the next year.,
and the next, and .....
Excellent forums. The forums were pretty relaxed, good attendance, with a
lot of discussion. And, of course, the "extended forums" went on into the
night under the picnic pavilion. Del Magsum ("farmerdel") was there with
his Corvair Sonex. The Corvair-powered brand new William Wynne Zenair was
there. Lots of Ford discussion. The Ford Model A club showed up on
Saturday with an impressive array of Model As all parked in a reviewing
line. Lowell Frank had put his Warner 145 radial back on his Piet, which
is great to see and hear in the air. John Dilatush was available for info
on the various Subaru engines in airplanes. His turbosupercharged Subaru
is a technical wonder to behold, as is the workmanship on his whole
mountaintop airplane.
The thing that impressed me the most was that with all that cross section
of people, they all seemed to be grinning all the time.

Doc, Any GN-1s at Broadhead? I'm new to the list and Pietenpols in general, but
I wonder why I never see much about the GN-1 which I understand is a "modern"
version of the Piet.

Subject: | Piet on floats flies off H20 |
Further to my experiment of putting the Pietenpol on Full Lotus floats. Today
it actually Flew from Lake 'Lac Du Bonnet'.
Added a set of Full Lotus 1260's, after install weight was 816#. The A65 had a
Sensenich Wood Prop about 72x43 or 44. (worked fine on wheels, but didn't cut
it on floats)
I set the step of the floats at 25 1/2 aft of the MAC. This is about 5 1/2 - 6"
behind the normal loaded cg of 19 - 20.5" of MAC. And I set the incidence angle
of the floats to 3 1/2 deg. down from level fuselage longeron.
Tried it last weekend but it wouldn't get up on the step. Even with some 8 kt.
wind. The wood prop wood only give me 2025 rpm. So yesterday I put a warp
drive 2 blade 72" prop and dialed it in to 2350 rpm static. Almost got it up but
had to use full forward stick to get it on the step and the heels were dragging,
slowing me down as I tried to rotate. Best was one float out of the water.
Then today I changed float incidence angle to 7deg. down by shortening the
rear lift struts and tried her again.
This time no problem getting up on the step. Required only neutral stick to
get on the step and keep it there. In an 8kt. wind with alt. setting of 30.12,
850 asl, and 30C (real hot for us northerners) it flew itself off the water.
Climb was similar to the wood prop on wheels with a passenger (slow) and top speed
was reduced from 76mph on wheels at 2200 rpm (wood prop) to 72 mph at 2300
rpm. Top rpm with the warp drive in level was 2450 rpm.
After all the unsuccessful runs over the last two weeks preceding the flight.
(I think the locals were taking bets) The locals on the lake cheered after I
returned to the dock.
I bet if one of you Piet owners with more powerful Continentals, Corvair, and
Subaru engines would have an easier time getting off the water.
Pictures in flight soon. And if any of you find yourself in Manitoba Canada I'll
gladly let you have a look.
