Any problems with reduced yaw stability in the air with the floats? Any need for additional fin area? Jack -----Original Message----- From: owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of Shawn Wolk Subject: Pietenpol-List: Piet on floats flies off H20 Further to my experiment of putting the Pietenpol on Full Lotus floats. Today it actually Flew from Lake 'Lac Du Bonnet'. Added a set of Full Lotus 1260's, after install weight was 816#. The A65 had a Sensenich Wood Prop about 72x43 or 44. (worked fine on wheels, but didn't cut it on floats) I set the step of the floats at 25 1/2 aft of the MAC. This is about 5 1/2 - 6" behind the normal loaded cg of 19 - 20.5" of MAC. And I set the incidence angle of the floats to 3 1/2 deg. down from level fuselage longeron. Tried it last weekend but it wouldn't get up on the step. Even with some 8 kt. wind. The wood prop wood only give me 2025 rpm. So yesterday I put a warp drive 2 blade 72" prop and dialed it in to 2350 rpm static. Almost got it up but had to use full forward stick to get it on the step and the heels were dragging, slowing me down as I tried to rotate. Best was one float out of the water. Then today I changed float incidence angle to 7deg. down by shortening the rear lift struts and tried her again. This time no problem getting up on the step. Required only neutral stick to get on the step and keep it there. In an 8kt. wind with alt. setting of 30.12, 850 asl, and 30C (real hot for us northerners) it flew itself off the water. Climb was similar to the wood prop on wheels with a passenger (slow) and top speed was reduced from 76mph on wheels at 2200 rpm (wood prop) to 72 mph at 2300 rpm. Top rpm with the warp drive in level was 2450 rpm. After all the unsuccessful runs over the last two weeks preceding the flight. (I think the locals were taking bets) The locals on the lake cheered after I returned to the dock. I bet if one of you Piet owners with more powerful Continentals, Corvair, and Subaru engines would have an easier time getting off the water. Pictures in flight soon. And if any of you find yourself in Manitoba Canada I'll gladly let you have a look. Shawn Wolk C-FRAZ Pietenpol on Wheels, Skis, and Floats!!! Wednesday: Tom Kretschman's Pietenpol AirCamper was certified. It will be based 24 miles away at Tom's Sugar Ridge Airport, Verona, WI. (see attached photo) Thursday: 2:25:02 PM--Dick Weeden took Tom's Piet on it's maiden flight--landed at 2:39:50 PM. A NEW BIRD IS BORN! Several uneventful flights ensued. (A Hatz with round engine was born the week before and entertained us with many, many flights including documenting its aerobatic envelope (away from the airport)--Had to get those hours flown off so it could go to Oshkosh.) Friday: More Piets arrive. The final total would be 16. John Dilatush and Chuck Gantzer had long flights to reach Brodhead. At 7:26:24 PM a strange, but somehow familiar, sound was heard and became louder as it approached from the North East--a hiss and a rumble. The hiss was an F-80 (or T-33) and the rumble a P-51. They made a big turn and did a low and slow (for them, anyway) tight formation fly-by for us. My friend, Don's, wife pointed to him and said, "What a goof ball....he's got goosepimples." I quickly covered my arms. Saturday: 3:50:04 PM--Took a photo of William Wynne's Zenith 601XL, Corvair powered, of course. It is hard to believe that work began only 8 months ago on this bird. Each day I was in awe of the beautiful work done on the many Pietenpols. My vote for the real standouts were the creations of Ken Perkins (orange Piet), John Dilatush (dark blue and cream or white) and Larry Williams (red and yellow). These Piets make me want to go home, take an axe to my project and start all over. The meals prepared by Chapter 431 were great. The Door County style fish boil on Friday was incredible. Some people who usually won't eat fish were raving about how good it was. The grilled pork chops with "secret sauce" on Saturday were out of this world. I am proud to announce that on Saturday I was inducted into TACO by the Grand Pooba himself, Sterling Brooks. I didn't have any Corona, so I loaned him my cell phone so that he could call into town to order some for himself. Hey, don't call me cheap! It's not my fault he wouldn't accept a Miller Lite. Sterling decided that my good will towards him qualified me for "indictment" even if I was cheap. He even informed me that I could soon attain the very rare title of TACO Chief Pilot. Each day we were entertained by another one of those wonderful planes based at Brodhead--a "Jenn-uine" Curtis Jenny powered by a Hisso. Seeing this bird fly was another cause of goosepimples. So much going on. So many beautiful planes. The Pietenpols were of course the stars of the show. Reporting from beautiful, green, Southern Wisconsin. Dick Hartwig Waunakee, WI rhartwig11@juno.com P.S. See you at 'scosh! ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 07:25:31 AM PST US From: "Shawn Wolk" Subject: Pietenpol-List: RE: Piet on floats flies off H20 Actually pitch stability improved. On wheels it is quite pitch sensitive. Probably because the CL of the wing and CG are close together. My Piet has a non-standard tail, ('29 Monocoupe) and rudder input in the air was about the same. Where I noticed a difference is a more pronounced pendulum action in roll. Seemed more stable in a convection bump over the trees (wing didn't drop aas far) and the pendulum action made it real smooth rolling into a turn. I think the additional weight all the way down there made it more stable. I'm hoping to get the pictures soon so I can compare how the attitude looks in level flight. As a Head Pilot for the Helotes, TX district of TACO, it may be more appropriate for me to fly down to Corona country to visit Gary Gower! But no, because Guadalajara is in the mountains it may be more appropriate for something like Mountain Piet to make that journey. What a great experience! Great airplanes, great friendly people, good food -- fantastic! This was the best aviation event I've ever been to, bar none but my first trip to Oshkosh in 1970!!! (Or was it '71?) Learned a lot about Piets from Vi Kappler, Ford engines from Ken Perkins, carburetors from Terry ....(sorry!), building wings from Charlie Rubeck, and had a nice visit with "Long-distance Chuck" and several other builders. It was magnificent! Came home with lots of info, a set of ribs (not the BBQ kind either!), Vi Kappler's hinges and lots of inspiration! A million thanks to all the Brodhead EAA folks, the guys who brought their Piets for the rest of us to look at, the cooks, and everyone who had anything to do with this wonderful event -- I'll be back next year! And by the way, three cheers for Bernie Pietenpol who made all of this possible 75 years ago when he designed and built this great, sturdy little plane! Fred B. Thanks Gary for the nice kind words. NO body can say they don't like a compliment even though they try to denigh it. I haven't heard from Chuck for several days so I decided to let those pilots on the scene, possibly with those lap top jobs, carry on the progressive narrative of the most spectactular Pietenpol adventure in 75 yars. I left Sunday for south Louisiana, I mean south just a few feet above Vemilion Bay to check on a few points about my acraege. Stayed with Jim Cooper and his lovely wife Edna Sunday nite, what a treat. Jim is building a beautiful GN-1 and the workmanship is something to envy. I might add, I hope Jim won't mind, that he is the great grand son of the famous book author, Last of the Mohigans, James Fenimore Cooper. Drove home today, made better time than Charlie Averitt who ferried my Piet to Zapata, Tx. I hope that Charlie hookes up with some of those yankee professional journalistic types which seem to be in overabundance the convention days. Unless he asks, I'm not available any more. YKW in La. Off the record, a black bear was surprised last night going through this mans garbage can next door to where I was visiting. The new Louisiana license plate for auto says. Protect the Black Bear. What about the people. This animal husbandry can be carried a bit tooooooo far ________________________________ Message 13 ____________________________________ Time: 09:09:09 PM PST US From: KTS5TA6@wmconnect.com Subject: Pietenpol-List: Brodhead. BOY HOWDY! 0.0 FROM_HAS_MIXED_NUMS From: contains numbers mixed in with letters Boy Howdy, Brodhead This experience at Brodhead was the finest aviation event I have ever been to in all my 52 years of growing up around airports and hanging out at airfields (except the times my dad did that "take your son to work thing" teaching me how to fly Twin Bonanzas in the late 50s before I could see over the instrument panel.) Brodhead was extraordinary and for those who have never been, please let me emphasize that y'all need to giddy-on-up there next time! It was well worth=20the 3,000+ miles I will have logged in a car driving back and forth to TACO land. I left Central Texas on Thursday and drove 23 hours straight without a break except to buy gas and tap a kidney. When I arrived on Friday, I didn't know Tacos from Shineola because I was so tired. But Brodhead was worth every mile, gallon of gas and lost sleep I endured. I met a whole mess of fine people there! Not a sourpuss in the entire crowd. Also, I met dozens upon dozens of Darned Fine Yankees. I wonder how us southerners started calling them that other "D" word? I think I indicted nearly a dozen Darned Fine Yankees into the TACO club. Even recruited one further north than Yankee land from Canada. The highlight of the entire trip (O$CA$H included) was meeting and interviewing Bernard Pietenpol's granddaughter. I have her name on videotape, and please excuse me for the fact her name has slipped my tongue at the moment. I also shot video of Bernard's great granddaughter taking her first ride in a Corvair powered Pietenpol. That was indeed a hoot. The entire family was very gracious, warm and accommodating and I think I indicted half of 'em into TACO. I won't know until they send me their photos for their TACO ID card. When I met the Pietenpol clan, I thought I fell off a ship somewhere in Scandinavia. I never saw so many handsome looking blond headed folks in one group in my entire life. And so nice, much in the way I'm sure Bernard was. I missed seeing Mike King (our Grande Chalupa) and I wish Terry Bowden (our Big Burrito=E2=80=A6 stands for President in border Spanish) could have been there=E2=80=A6 Maybe next year. Oscar! Where were you? And Jim... reckon he was stuck in traffic with our other TACO Officers. I'd like to personally thank everyone who allowed me to interview them about their Air Camper building and flying experiences. Chuck was terrific and such an easy-going, knowledgeable fellow. He shared some great stories about his airplane and I'm confident his contribution to my video will be worthwhile for those who will follow as builder/flyers. I don't have time or space at the moment to thank everyone, but let me assure you, anyone connected with the Air Camper experience can be described as a great bunch of folks. And Brodhead is a must for your 2005 calendar.
