Subject: | Flying and Gliding Skyscout and Improved Aircamper Ribs |
I am just back from Brodhead and wanting to start on my rib jig. Looking around
I have found I left my Flying and Gliding manual for the Aircamper at work but
I do have my Flying and Gliding manual with the Skyscout. I am planning on
building an improved Aircamper with the 3 piece wing, will the ribs shown for
the Skyscout work? I am mainly worried about the airfoil shape so I can build
the capstrip portions of the jig. If the spar locations and bracing are also
correct that would be a plus. I bet someone else out there has looked into
this, if so please let me know if this will work or if I need to wait until my
improved Aircamper plans arrive.

Our neighbors out in Montana are constantly being raided by Grizzly bears. They
eat the chickens and tear up the buildings and fences. If you kill one you are
in big trouble.
Where are the priorities these days? Rumor has it that a 12 ga with a rock salt
load helps.

Thanks Gary for the nice kind words. NO body can say they don't like a compliment
even though they try to denigh it.
I haven't heard from Chuck for several days so I decided to let those pilots
on the scene, possibly with those lap top jobs, carry on the progressive narrative
of the most spectactular Pietenpol adventure in 75 yars.
I left Sunday for south Louisiana, I mean south just a few feet above Vemilion
Bay to check on a few points about my acraege. Stayed with Jim Cooper and his
lovely wife Edna Sunday nite, what a treat. Jim is building a beautiful GN-1
and the workmanship is something to envy. I might add, I hope Jim won't mind,
that he is the great grand son of the famous book author, Last of the Mohigans,
James Fenimore Cooper. Drove home today, made better time than Charlie Averitt
who ferried my Piet to Zapata, Tx. I hope that Charlie hookes up with some
of those yankee professional journalistic types which seem to be in overabundance
the convention days.
Unless he asks, I'm not available any more.
YKW in La.
Off the record, a black bear was surprised last night going through this mans
garbage can next door to where I was visiting. The new Louisiana license plate
for auto says. Protect the Black Bear. What about the people. This animal husbandry
can be carried a bit tooooooo far

Pieters and interested,
Chuck called near noon today. Fist I had heard from him since Quincy, Ill. He
did smoke and bomb Brodhead as he planned. Slept in his sack tent while there
but last night managed a cot in someone's hangar so he felt better today. He
gave about twenty rides at Brodhead but the highlight he said was a ride given
him in a Starduster. He was still flying high over that experience.
He is NOT attending Oshkosh. His plan is to fly to his former home in
Wheeling, WV, visit his two sons and fly direct to Wichita.
He was leaving Brodhead following our conversation with a planned fuel stop
at Joliet, Il and an RON at Delphi, Ind. He said he would keep me informed so I
guess I'm the operations nco for the remainder of Tour America.

Howdy Piet folks..
It seem that the TACO wagon is rollin...not only across TEXAS..but across the
nation as well. This is great! TEXAS is way over due for an organized
group of Pietenpol builders. And as evidenced by the good turn-out and great time
at Tick Hill last week, the time is certainly ripe. Up to now...I haven't
said too much about all of the enthusiastic emails from Sterling on the
formation of this TACO group. I have to admit that I wasn't too keen on the name
at
first....especially after the look Leann gave me when I told her that she may
be named a TACO "Belle". I was also somewhat stymied by the mention of alcohol
as a means of indoctrination. In my way of thinking, flying and alcohol
don't mix. I'm not against anyone having a relaxing beverage as long as it isn't
mixed with flying (or driving for that matter.) So needless to say... It has
taken me some time to warm up to the name and the indictment terrms of the
TACO organization.
Now....Before everyone starts thinking I am bashing Sterling....hold on. I
aplaud you Sterling for rallying the troops and stirring the interest. As I
said... its about time for a Texas Piet group. I have to say....EVERYONE I have
met so far in this Pietenpol group has been super. It is amazing to me how
this little beloved airplane design seems to attract a broad cross-section of
interesting and down-to earth builders and enthusiasts. I have thoroughly
enjoyed being a part of this email discussion list and look forward to meeting
each and everyone on it. We also are looking forward to hosting the 2nd annual
Tick Hill gathering next year....perhaps in a cooler month... and not so close
to Broadhead, so maybe more folks can attend.
So anyway... I am here to say....WAY to GO Sterling!. Count me in. I have
prepared something to contribute. It is some artwork that I would like to
propose as the TACO logo. Click on the link below to see it. If anyone else has
a logo they'd like to propose...just send it to me and I will post it and
we'll take a poll for votes of everyone's favorite. Once everyone has settled
on
the "official" design, I plan to have some shirts screened for my family and
anyone else who wants one. Leann is planning to digitize this for embroidery
on hats too.
So lets keep the TACO wagon rolling....get those Piets flying... and lets get
together for some good times!

I was wonderin what happened DJ. Doesn't it stink when work gets in the way
of Piet progress?!!!! Well....that is until payday... (then I am soooo
thankful for the blessing of having a good job.) I am looking forward to seeing
your site and the pics of Chucks trip. From the sounds of Corky's email...it
seems that Chuck has changed his itenerary. He was planning to fly North from
Broadhead and cross lake Michigan at Macinac bridge. But it now sounds like he
has opted to take the shorter southern route to W. Virginia.

Subject: | Tailwheel Cable Geometry |
Last week I was showing Chuck my plan for tailwheel steering. We got into a
discussion about geometry and the leverage and throw required for steering.
Chuck showed me how he attached tailwheel steering cables very close inboard
from his feet near the center of the fulcrum on the rudder bar. His logic is
that the 'throw" (or travel) is a shorter distance on the tailwheel steering
arms than on the rudder horns.
I am getting ready to design the attachments for tailwheel steering on mine
and have been thinking more about this. First of all....our plane does not
have a rudder bar...but instead has pedals similar to a J3 cub. I could
accomplish the same effect of Chucks design by welding a tab onto the pedal closer
to
the pedal fulcrum. This way the tailwheel steering travel will be shorter
than the rudder cable travel.
But after thinking this over... I am not so sure that this is the best way to
set this up. I am planning to use compression springs at the tailwheel
steering arms to dampen shimmy. But I am thinking that the springs will also
compensate for the difference in "throw" if I choose to tie the rudder and
tailwheel cables together with the same travel. In addition....I am thinking that
this should allow more steering authority with less input when the tailwheel is
on the ground.
Does anyone have any experience and comment on this? I am not knocking
Chucks design. He is a whiz at all things mechanical. But I am just trying to
think this through before I make more parts. One thing I did notice is that 'ol
NX770CG's rudder seems to swipe back and forth a lot on 3-point landing as it
is steered down the runway. I don't notice nearly that much rudder input
required to steer the Taylorcraft.

I agree, Terry. Regarding the logo, I've already got a spot (I knew someone would
come up with a good logo, thanks!) located on the upper part of my Piet's
vertical stab for a sticker. I remember seeing a bunch of "old" stickers from
"fly-in's past" on Allan Wise' 3000+ hour Air Camper and being a bit jealous.....now
I'll have my own "identity".....and what a crowd to get to identify with!
This is going to be fun....
Jim in Plano......just epoxied a couple Ash pieces for the reat seat belt connect
points, finished the rear seat framing and put the first coat of varnish on
the 1/4" mahogany ply seat.....

Subject: | Re: Flying and Gliding Skyscout and Improved Aircamper |
Ribs
The rib is exactly the same. EXCEPT for one important detail.
The last angle brace, from the rear spar to the last upright is
reversed, going from top at the spar downwards to the rear on
your Scout plans. This is the way it should be on the Air Camper
as well.
Bernard found there was separation at this point as that brace
was in tension. Placing it in compression solved the problem.
