Looks good to me, Terry. My only comment is I don't remember from my days
of flying my Cub in Texas ever seeing a windsock that limp. Generally it
was straight as an arrow, pointing north (unless a "Blue Norther" had blown
in, in which case it was straight as an arrow pointing south).

Howdy Piet folks..
It seem that the TACO wagon is rollin...not only across TEXAS..but across
the nation as well. This is great! TEXAS is way over due for an organized
group of Pietenpol builders. And as evidenced by the good turn-out and
great time at Tick Hill last week, the time is certainly ripe. Up to
now...I haven't said too much about all of the enthusiastic emails from
Sterling on the formation of this TACO group. I have to admit that I wasn't
too keen on the name at first....especially after the look Leann gave me
when I told her that she may be named a TACO "Belle". I was also somewhat
stymied by the mention of alcohol as a means of indoctrination. In my way
of thinking, flying and alcohol don't mix. I'm not against anyone having a
relaxing beverage as long as it isn't mixed with flying (or driving for that
matter.) So needless to say... It has taken me some time to warm up to the
name and the indictment terrms of the TACO organization.
Now....Before everyone starts thinking I am bashing Sterling....hold on. I
aplaud you Sterling for rallying the troops and stirring the interest. As I
said... its about time for a Texas Piet group. I have to say....EVERYONE I
have met so far in this Pietenpol group has been super. It is amazing to me
how this little beloved airplane design seems to attract a broad
cross-section of interesting and down-to earth builders and enthusiasts. I
have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this email discussion list and look
forward to meeting each and everyone on it. We also are looking forward to
hosting the 2nd annual Tick Hill gathering next year....perhaps in a cooler
month... and not so close to Broadhead, so maybe more folks can attend.
So anyway... I am here to say....WAY to GO Sterling!. Count me in. I have
prepared something to contribute. It is some artwork that I would like to
propose as the TACO logo. Click on the link below to see it. If anyone
else has a logo they'd like to propose...just send it to me and I will post
it and we'll take a poll for votes of everyone's favorite. Once everyone
has settled on the "official" design, I plan to have some shirts screened
for my family and anyone else who wants one. Leann is planning to digitize
this for embroidery on hats too.
So lets keep the TACO wagon rolling....get those Piets flying... and lets
get together for some good times!

A little info for those contemplating welding:
While at Brodhead I was party to a discussion regarding the suitability of
the use of TIG welding for 4130, and concerns about edge hardening, which
leads to cracking. No question that this is a bad thing. There were
misconceptions that 4130 should ONLY be welded using gas. The main problem
with TIG welding 4130 occurs when the improper filler rod is used. If the
proper procedures are followed, TIG will produce excellent welds with 4130.
(Remember also, that only by following the proper procedures can proper
welds be achieved using gas!)
Following is a handy link that seems to clarify all the concerns.

Basically, these are the criteria:
1) fit your joints with minimum of gap
2) clean the edges to be welded
3) metal should be at 70F or higher
4) USE THE PROPER FILLER ROD (ER80S-D2, ER70S-2, ER70S-6, or stainless
310 or 312 --- DO NOT USE 4130 filler)
5) Slow cool the weld in still air - DO NOT QUENCH.
6) No heat treatment (stress relief) required for thicknesses of .120"
or less.
The techniques apply up to .120" thickness (okay for the piet fittings!).
TIG can provide such a nice clean job of welding, without the need for
pre-heating (other than room temperature), and it's not that difficult to
learn.

Thanks for the comments on the logo design...so I am submitting proposal #2....
see link below. Some of the comments were incorporated into the logo...pilot
and "belle" added...white scarf. Flight attitude in level cruise...not in a
downward mode. Sorry Jack... the windsock is a fantasy...light breeze..tailwind.

sitka spruce, or even better, where NOT to get the wood? Also, does
anyone out there have a slightly used builders manual they would be
willing to part with at a reasonable price? Or is it available online
somewhere?

Randy Bruce designed a special t-shirt for the 75th anniversary of the Air Camper
but didn't sell them all (or even half!) at Brodhead so I'm putting out the
call for the rest of us to help him out.
These aren't the typical computer-font type designs. Randy is a pretty talented
artist and he made a big effort to make these shirts very special. At Brodhead,
the Pietenpol family was so impressed that they bought 9 of them. He even donated
the original artwork to them.
So here's the deal: he will sell AND ship them for what he was asking for them
at Brodhead which is exactly $16.00. No extra shipping, handling, or other charges!
I am doing this for him for two reasons. First, he doesn't have a computer and
next, because he put quite a bit of his hard-earned bucks into the project, drove
all the way to Brodhead from his home (boat) near Orlando, FL and back to
share his talent and celebrate the auspicious occasion with and for us. It would

I got most of mine from Wicks Aircraft Supply. Good wood, and fast
shipping, but the shipping can cost nearly as much as the wood. Aircraft
Spruce and Specialty is also good quality, but they are slow on shipping
spruce, and they are expensive (so is Wick's).
If you don't have catalogs from each of these companies, get them. Both
have websites, and both offer free catalogs that have just about everything
you will need to build an airplane. Personally, I like Wicks better. AS&S
is just a little too pricey.

Well I can't hold it in any longer. My twin daughter is in the hospital
awaiting twins any day now. So, I am grounded to home area. Had to cancel
Brodhead and OSH. Moped all weekend thinking about Brodhead. So, went out
on Monday and flew 3 different Pietenpols for 4 hours. Not quite like
flying to Brodhead, but my butt hurt just as much...
I am test flying two different Piets for friends. It has given me a chance
to compare some things I have taken for granted. I want to share some
observations with current builders.
When you finish the fuselage but before adding things like rudder pedals,
throttles, etc. plug in a tv and tune in your favorite program and sit in
the fuselage and watch. And think. Put your rudder pedals where you think
you want them. Put your feet on them and sit and watch that program. You
will soon start to see whether they are in a place that is comfortable or
where you can barely walk when you try to get out. If the pedals are too
close to you, your knees will be bent too much. Your ankles will also be
bent back a lot and the heel brakes will be awkward to apply. The knees
will also be in the way of the control stick and limit the amount of aileron
movement. Also, most of your weight will be concentrated on your tailbone
and you will hurt after a short time.
Other things to look at. Don't have the throttle so that your knee will hit
it while getting in. Could ruin your day after you hand prop it but don't
yet have your feet on the brakes. Make sure the cables, like those that
attach to the rudder pedals, don't have cotter keys, frayed ends, or ends of
safety wire protruding where it can gouge your shoes or ankles. Could be
distracting while trying to fly. Make sure your shoe is not going to jam
between the rudder pedal and an side upright or passenger seat part. Could
happen at a most inopportune time. Same thing for levers or pull starters.
Be sure they are located in places that make using them easy. On of the
Piets I am testing has the pull starter located so that it almost cuts off
your fingers as you pull on it. Moved one inch forward it would be a
non-issue.
Make sure the brakes can be applied with ease while your feet are on the
rudder pedals. Not so easy that you apply brakes inadvertently, but not so
hard to find that you might hit one and miss the other. If you have to lift
your feet off the rudder pedals to apply brakes, or if you have to make your
legs and ankles do things that only a contortionist can do comfortable, you
are looking at an accident waiting to happen.
Sorry this turned out so long. I only wanted you to know that you can do
things that will affect the safety and pleasure of flying your Pietenpol.
But, they are easier to do while building rather than after you start flying
it.

Thanks for the responses! I live in Kentucky, so that may be a factor

Randy Bruce designed a special t-shirt for the 75th anniversary of the Air Camper
but didn't sell them all (or even half!) at Brodhead so I'm putting out the
call for the rest of us to help him out.

Hey All !!
I have so many stories to tell (most of which are true) it will take me months
to get them all told!! Everything is working out so well on this trip.
I've finally got to a computer where I can sit down and type a few words. I'm
at my sister's, in Columbus OH right now. Tomorrow (probably late morning),
she will take me back out to the airport, and I think I just about have her
convinced to go for a flight !! She has a friend from work that is going to meet
us out there, who has two kids who I'll introduce to the 'Wonderful World
of Pietenpols'.
I'll probably depart Union Co. Airport (Marysville) sometime late afternoon,
and head on east to Marshall Co. Airport, which is just south of Wheeling W V.
I'll be staying with my boys, and visiting home for a week or so, and I'll
have access to a computer, so I'll be able to let you all know of some of the
wonderful experiences I've had. I could do that flight in one hop, but as I fly
over the airports that I use for way-points on the GPS, if I see anyone down
there, I peel off, and go give them a 'Smoke Run', then circle back around and
land. A bit of a diversion, but a necessary one.
It was difficult to admit that Brodhead was over this year, and I was the last
one to fly away. The others were John in Mountain Piet...I think he left at
the crack of dawn. Then the two guys in the Starduster left some time just
before noon. I got very memorable ride in that plane !!
I had a bit of a scare as I approached Portland Indiana last evening. Fog was
closing in, and visibility was closing in. That GPS that I have bad mouthed
in the past, helped me find the airport. I was at full power, holding the stick
forward to maintain view of the earth (skud running) when the runway broke
into view at 1.8 miles out. Let me tell you, that runway was a sight for sore
eyes !! I'll go into more details about it in the near future.
I'll still keep in touch with Corky, while en route, to keep everyone posted
of where the next smoke run, or T.P. drop will occur !!
