I couldn't have done it better myself. Great work Steve! I will try to keep the group informed about out Piets as time go's. Mr.Mita's Piets biggest problem is the red tape here, it is very restrictive to this type of aircraft but as always, there is a little light at the end of the long tunnel so with luck, a Piet will grace the sky's here eventually. Keep on Pieting!! Just sat there getting dirtier and dirtier. Now he had to sell it, so we washed it of the brown dust, and he wanted to taxi it to a hose to rinse it. The battery was dead, and wouldn't take a charge. He got in and primed it, and on the 6th flip of the prop, it was running, even on the old gas. Man, that metal prop was sharp, had to put on gloves. Ain't life grand! walt evans NX140DL ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 05:50:37 PM PST US From: "Michael Conkling" Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: 42nd EAA Fly-In El Dorado KS Chuck, You'll have to enjoy it for me(!!) -- I get to run the museum (Exploration Place, Wichita, KS) this weekend -- guess I can set-up our flight sim Piet to be flying from El Dorado! I DO plan to setup a tent on the west side of the field at Brodhead (most likely Fri) -- see ya all there! Mike C. Id want several things done before I fired an engine that had sat that long. Id be interest in the mechanics in here opinions on what they would do with an engine that had sat that long without any maintenance. ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 11:00:26 PM PST US From: "Catdesign" Subject: Pietenpol-List: Wing Construction opinions --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Catdesign" Thanks to all who offered their opinion on what wing to build. I really want to build the one piece but I can't imagine being able to afford a hanger here in California. Don't know what I am going to do when I get the plane done but we will cross that hurdle when we get there. Most likely I'll opt for the 3 piece and accept the weight and added build time. I just hate having to accept reality. Now for the reason I am building my wing 60 miles from home. Well I'm not proud to admit this, but I figure if it's sitting in Dad's garage he will of course have to help me and well, hey Dad you mind gluing this up for me while I'm gone and hey why dont you do the same thing to the other one while your at it. I think it will be cool to include him in this endeavor, he is a long time EAAer but never a plane builder, he wants an RV-7 but at 68 I doubt he would start one. So yes, I agree with you guys about building them at home but I have alternative motives here. Plus he has a bunch of woodworking tools that have never been used and it might make my mom happy to see them used for a change. As an aside, my Dad is a retired Air Force pilot who flew KC-135, C-97, Some kind of spray plane in Vietnam (no Agent Orange that he knew of, just bug spray), a Saberliner ferrying Air Force bigwigs, T-38, T-37, T-34, T-33, T-41 and I'm sure others. His final assignment was refueling SR-71's (he has some cool pictures). He has over 20,000 hours in the air, ATP, Commercial, Multi engine, instrument and he would let me with all my 60hr of flight time fly in the left seat of our 182 and truly be Pilot-in-Command. I learned a lot flying with him before we had to sell the plane. He even got me into a full motion KC-10 simulator, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to fly and land, but watch out for Dutch roll on final or you'll scrape a wing pod if you don't, and I didn't. The only thing that makes me a bit sad is I doubt I will be able to get him into my plane when it's done. I'd really love to be able to take him flying. If I ever hit the lottery I'm going to buy him a RV-7 and give him a gas card. While I'm babbling along, how many civilians can say they have been in the traffic pattern with KC-135s, T-38s, U-2s, SR-71s and the odd C-5 and C-130. I can. Nothing like being on downwind and hearing a SR-71 being cleared to land while on a 20 mile final, and it beats you in. Yes, T-41s (C-172's) are that slow.
