Hi Guys:
I would like everyone's opinion (good or bad) of the engine and prop that I have
hanging from my Piet.
O-200 Continental with a DCM 6948 McCauley prop. (Certified)
Before you "let me have it with both barrels" , you gotta realize that I have spent
"many, many moons" agonizing over what seems to be every possible combination.
--Sweet sounding and running Model A with a hand-crafted prop. (At the time of
my decision I was flying out of an airstrip that had a late springtime density
altitude of ~ 8200 ft. )
--Smooth running and affordable Corvair. (This was at a time prior to William
Wynn and before I had many mechanical skills)
--Kinner radial (Nice dream)
--65 and 75hp Continental (I am not comfortable with hand propping and I know that
if it is done properly a fellow can do it from behind the prop with a minimum
of effort)
--85hp and 90hp Continental, electric start (Good reputation, maybe even better
reputation than the O-200, I made my decision back during the Trade a Plane newspaper
days. Before E-bay and e-mail.)
Any sound advice would be appreciated

Mike L,
That is a great choice of engine for a Pietenpol and others have used the
0-200 successfully in the past like
Mike Brusilow in NY state. Even though you have the excess power, still
try to build light and keep the
bells and whistles to what you really think you'll need.
You should get some very good performance even on warm days with a passenger.
You add two or three feet to the wings and you'll have a super climber !

Mike you know what they say about opinions - opinions are like a**holes
- everybody's got one and most are full of xxxx
Having said that, my opinion is you've got a good combination there.
The O-200 is a good engine and a far better engine than a C85
Continental. Without a generator or starter, the O-200 doesn't weigh a
lot more than an A65 with half again as much power.
It does turn faster and doesn't have (to my ear) as satisfying a sound
as a Model A, or an A65, but I think it sounds better than a Corvair -
again just my opinion, but I've gotten used to the sound of my A65.
More power is always a good thing. If you want to save gas you can
always throttle it back.
As for the metal prop, metal props are more efficient, and make the
engine run smoother (better flywheel). They also don't have to be
re-torqued periodically like wooden props do. With that engine with a
generator and starter and a metal prop, you might have the world's first
nose-heavy Pietenpol.
Do it, Man!

My GN-1 has an A-75. The builder flew it with an O-200 for about 7hrs, but
removed it because it had "too much torque" according to the logs (I've never
driven, flown, or used any machine that had too much torque, but thats another
thread). I wish it still had the O-200 with no generator or starter, and a
good old wood prop. I might take a generator, but I don't think I'd install a
starter if someone gave it to me for free.
In my opinion, the perfect engine for a Pietenpol would be a C-90 (but
the O-200
is a close second). The weight and power are great for this plane. My
A-75 is
decent, but when I have a passenger on board, I'm always wishing I had
a little
more power. A 150lb passenger increases the weight of my plane by 18%, and
probably degrades the climb performance by a similar amount. 27% more
horsepower would be nice at those times, and you can always throttle it
back in
cruise for fuel economy & range.

Hey Chuck-just got done watching your DVD again and was wondering if that wind-mill
farm is in full swing yet?
Also, did you receive the two DVDs I sent?
Been doing any flying lately?
Will be picking up my Piet probably this April-Once I get her assembled I'll have
to fly her over to that restaurant shown on the DVD for breakfast.

Barry, one simple little question regarding your "survey" (dontya loves these!)
how is your financial situation. from my perspective (and everyone keep in mind,
99.9% of all matronics comments stem from individual opinions) it would appear
all of your options, the ones you offered, are viable applications to the
Piet. Some would even be pretty (Kinner). so if finances are not a problem
go "fancy" or simplest or easiest to maintain, they all will work and for the
most part are dependable, so in my humble opinion it comes down to the ole green
stuff. and I believe the winner in this case would be the Corvair. Mean

Steve,
What prop do you have? Does it let you turn up to full RPM for the A75? I
am planning to use an A75 too. But I have 74CK44 Sensenich prop. This will
limit my static RPM, so my engine will perform same as an A65.
I agree.... A Piet would be sweet with a C90... Best of the little
continentals.

Thanks,
Mike ,Jack ,Steve, Barry, and Gene for the advice.
I told our former EAA Chapter 42 treasurer, Rob Spoo, that I would mention his
project on this list.
His ad is on our Chapter website www.eaa42.org (link to Planes for Sale) (link to monthly Newsletters for all necessary phone numbers or E-mail addresses)
All that I know about the project is that Rob bought it from a guy that bought
it from another guy.....
There seems to be a lot of "pieces, parts and plans" with this project, along with
a Corvair core. Asking $1500.00
I have never seen this project and don't really want to cause I have my hands full
with my Piet.
We have three excellent Tech Counselors in our group. If you, as the purchaser,
can get Cliff Balleau (sp) to OK the workmanship on this project, then his word
is as good as Gold, in my opinion. Cliff is an A.I. that is currently building
a Beech Staggerwing from plans. He finished a Starduster Biplane about
5 years ago.
Hopefully this works for someone out there.

Hi John,
Yes, I've heard the windmills are churning out the amps. Haven't been
back out there yet, but it's a really great area to fly in. Ya got the Flint
Hills, where the rolling grasslands grow a unique species of natural grass that
the cows & buffalo's get fattened up on. Then ya got that massive Windmill
Farm, that you can easily see from over 20 miles away...quite a sight. Ah yes,
then you've got the Beaumont Breakfast. Quant little town out in the middle
of nowhere, that has a beautiful little motel / restaurant, a grass strip, and
one of the best breakfasts that I've ever had. We will Definitely meet out
there when you get your ship airworthy.
Yes, I got the DVD's back. I have found that about 10% of the DVD
players out there will not recognize the format my computer burns to DVD-R discs,
but when I burn to a DVD+R disc those players work fine. My player works with
the -R, but will not work with the +R. I'm going to contract out a large
quantity of the video 'Stamped' as opposed to 'Burned', so that all players will
read the format, then start to really market my video. Thank you for your
patience during this learning curve.
I haven't done any of that Pilot stuff for several months. I'm going to
finish up the rework on my prop this weekend. Flying season is almost here !!
I finally got my web site up and running a few days ago, and keep
updating it every day. I've got lots more stuff planned to put up there.
