The Cabane dimensions are on Drawing Number 7 dated 3-26-34.
They are front 21 1/4"
rear 20 1/4"
At Brodhead in July, '05 I took dimensions of cabanes from five Pietenpols.
They are:
N number Front Rear
18235 23" 22"
17WR 23 1/4 22 1/4
2RN 23 22
899LW 23 3/8 22 3/8
48MC 23 22
Bill Rewey, NX17WR my mentor and EAA Tech Counselor, who has 11 yrs. and 30,000
mi. on his Pietenpol,
advised me to add another 1/4" to my front cabanes equaling a1 1/4" difference.
He feels this will improve the glide upon landing.

John,
For the intial smoke system,I went to a local auto parts store, and purchased
an after-market windshield washer tank & pump. I don't know what the brand
was. It's just a little 12v centrifugal type pump, that was an integral part
of the bottom of the tank. The tank wasn't big enough, and I mounted in the
wrong position. I built a fiberglass tank, and mounted it lower center of the
firewall. I removed the pump from that tank, and mounted it separately. I've
put a page on my web site, detailing the smoke system, but I haven't got that
page done yet. However, yesterday I added a lot more content to the site, and
much more to come.
Waiting anxiously for my first Grammy Award !! :)

Craig,
I used Denny Demeter's AvGrafix company for my Icarus Plummet logo on
the side of my Pietenpol. Mike Cuy used him as a well. His website is
http://www.avgrafix.com/custom1.htm
And his email address is: aerograf@shianet.org
He also did the stencils for the 30" numbers on my wings. Great guy to
work with.

Greetings Fellows,
I'm going to copy my question from the GN-1 list to you; I hope that, in the spirit
of scratch building, you all won't take offense at having a GN-1 question
posted to this list. Thanks, to all as ever, for your help.
Alan
Gents:
I've been following a thread on the Piet list concerning the length of cabane struts
on the Pietenpol. In a sample response from builders, all front struts
were taller than the rear-averaging 23" front and 22" rear. Our GN-1 plans call
for 23 1/4" fronts, and 23 1/2" rears. Are you fellows using these plans dimensions
(are they accurate?) or have you altered the lengths of the cabanes?

I was looking at the map of Mexico again (dreaming). To my eye, it should
be entirely possible to fly a Pietenpol from a customs crossing at Laredo,
TX to Guadalajara, Mexico in one day. Mind you, I'm talking about long
summer days with good VFR weather. Now more realistically, what with the
usual issues of getting started in the morning and clearing customs, it
makes more sense to do it in two days and that's the more likely way to do
it. In my case, I would stay overnight in Zapata or Laredo for a thorough
briefing from my instructor Charlie Avaritt, since he's flown extensively in
Mexico and flies there regularly. He also is familiar with the Piet and
knows how best a TACO should fold its way through those mountains on the
way. It sure looks like it would be an interesting journey in a Piet or a
gaggle of Piets.
Anyway, I did get in a nice day of working on the airplane on Saturday.
Everything forward of the firewall is completely ready to roll and has been
for the past few weeks... still just waiting for one spark plug wire and I
will try to light the fire. Meanwhile, I fitted the fuel tank support
straps back into the (new) support framing and tried out the fuel tank. It
needs some tweaking because now the forward top cowling won't quite line up
correctly on the firewall bulkhead top without the tank neck rubbing. It
sure looks nice to get the top cowling back in place after more than a year,
and to sit in the front cockpit with its windscreen in place. I'll tell you
what... it is a VERY short distance from the passenger's face up to where
the propeller is! This is not a large, nor a long, airplane! Working the
rudders from the front cockpit, my shoes nudge the bottom of the fuel tank
occasionally when doing a rudder dance.
Other flights I'm planning/dreaming of (besides Brodhead, of course)- the
SWRFI fly-in in coming up in May at Hondo, TX. And folks tell me that there
is an excellent, grass-roots fly-in at Reklaw, TX at the end of the summer.
I may just try that one if the airplane is flying OK by then... and Reklaw
is only about 100 SM from Shreveport so it would be an easy hop to the land
of crawfish jambalaya and Corky's shop. Then there's Sterling's
always-windy "Knot-2-Shabby" field and we can sneak a few cold Negro Modelos
while we shoot .44s and .45s and make lots of noise. (Hey, Sterling- I
handload for a .45LC Taurus revolver that I have, shooting "flying ashcan"
hollowpoints. Get some overripe watermelons!) I also have a Contender with
a short .30-30 barrel and I'll bet I can pulverize an empty beer can at, oh,
at least 30 paces ;o)

Well, I finally took the time to visit Chuck's website and it paid off (for
me, at least). Simple ideas are always the best, and Chuck's simple
airframe jack is just what I needed. I'll be removing the landing gear legs
from 41CC one last time to sandblast and paint them and I had planned to
climb up into the hangar framing to install a hoist to lift the plane so I
could remove the gear. No need... Chuck's simple jack will be how I do it.
I need to fabricate an adjustable tailwheel stand anyway to do the W&B, and
that stand is an essential element of the airframe jack system.
Thanks, Chuck!

Subject: | Nylaflow brake line tubing |
--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Oscar Zuniga" <taildrags@hotmail.com>
One other thing I noted on Chuck Gantzer's website is that he is using
Nylaflow tubing for his hydraulic brakes. I'm going to have to replace the
existing aluminum brake line tubing on 41CC and was planning to use
Nylaflow. I have some tubing and fittings that I've been messing with and
it seems that if you snug down the fittings where you think they should be
(without overtightening), the tubing is still so slick that you can pull the
tubing from the fitting by hand.
Any tips, tricks, or hints to using Nylaflow for brake lines?

Oscar,
There is a brass insert that goes in the end of the Nylaflow line. I
couldn't find them in AS&S's catalog but Wicks has them. For my 3/16" line I
ordered Wicks part no. 2030X4. I found this information on the Tailwind
forum. I haven't given mine the final snug yet but this insert was a fix for
the Tailwind boys. Keep us posted.

Oscar,
One thing that I still have to explain about the airframe jack stand. You
size up the dimensions to position it just an inch or two behind the firewall,
while the tail is on the ground. It should be snug right up against the bottom
of the plane, that way the mains come up off the ground as you lift the tail.
I lift the tail using my right hand, on the left side tube on the tail
wheel, and it's a little bit heavy, so just remember...Lift with your Legs, not
your Back. The top of the stand needs to be tied back to the bottom of the lift
struts, too, or the stand slides forward on the bottom of the plane. This
stand works very well for me, and I've used many, many times. Only takes a
couple of minutes, by myself, to jack the plane up. I think I also have pictures
of the adjustable tail stand that I welded together.

Like Lynn said, the insert is an essential part of the NylaFlow tubing.
