If you want to give me a call some time, I can go over this with you.
We have 4 of us here locally that are in various stages of
disassembly and reassembly. I can give you some specific
recommendations on cleaning up stuff & long-term storage. Also, one
of our EAA chapter members owns a performance machine shop & can do
things like rebore cylinders, recondition rods, rebuild
heads, balance, etc. He does top-notch work for a very resonable
price.
You need to be careful of is to not strip out threads while trying to
remove rusty stuff.
There are also a couple of things that go easier if you do them in a
particular sequence.
Anyway, if you want to talk about it, give me a call at 330-494-1775
(home, evenings).
You might also want to consider coming up for our Corvair Fly-In June
2-4. William will be here & we hope to have a good assortment of
flying Corvair-powered planes and cars.
There is preliminary info on William's web site & our chapter will be
putting out detailed info in a few weeks.

hi fellow pieters, I was at sun n fun last april and building my fuselage in
the woodworking tent. I don't plan on working there this year because I need
to attend welding, sheet metal, and fabric classes. I have finished the
fuselage,tail feathers, one wing, most of the motor mount, and center section.
The
36in center section will be a wet one with a drain at the front and rear.
Holding off on the landing gear as I am not a welder and not sure how to go about
it. My corvair engine is torn down and most of the new parts have been
delivered. Looking forward to seeing some of you pieters next month.

Flying to Brodhead is definitely on my to-do list, just don't know if it is
going to be 2006.
More likely I will be there at 2007.
I am still chipping away at my 40 hour test phase, flew only 3 times this
month due to weather.
Last Saturday was finally again a nice day, flew for an hour, as did two
piper J3's we did some loose formation flying, great fun.
I do have my mind set to get my 40 hours out of the way before May.
I Intend to make it to Hondo this year, That will be my first real cross
country.
I took us last year (a group consisting of a Kitfox and a Taylorcraft L2) 6
hours, due to heads winds and frequent fuel stops.
Return trip was done in 4 hours.
This year the group will be bigger, Two Piper J3's, a Aeronca L3, a Kitfox
and my Pietenpol.
The same group will go to Reklaw as well.
In 2007 I could make it to Brodhead / Oshkosh, it will take a few days to
get there but is something that is in the plans.
On cleaning and storing your disassembled engine, you can clean it in a
variety of different ways.
If you use soaps try to avoid soaps with a high phosphate content (aluminum
does not like it)
High phosphate soups cut grease real good but "eats" also aluminum. (most
store bought degreasers are high phosphate)
If you do use it, do not let it sit overnight and always rinse with clean
water afterwards.
Best is to find a engine shop nearby and let them "hot tank" it.
For storage I recommend to lubricate everything in motor oil and wrap it in
old rags.
Store it in a dry place.
Keep on building

Hans,
I was looking at your website the other night. Is there any chance
you'll be able to bring your new Piet to Brodhead this summer. I would
love to see it up close, especially with the William Wynne corvair
engine.
I need some advice from you and any others that have experience along
this line. I have a corvair engine. I have just received William
Wynne's new video about how to disassemble it. I have a little class of
5 high school boys who are going to work with me the next two weeks to
take it apart to prepare it for an eventual rebuild. But I do not expect
to rebuild it for a year or two.
How do you recommend we clean the various parts, and what is the best way
to store the parts for a year or more?
Any good advice would be appreciated. I am a total novice on motors. I
have never taken apart an engine before, or even opened one up.

Oscar,
Yes, thank you for pointing this out to the list. We ARE NOT going
to be doing any major engine work at this event, more on the order of
a couple short forums by William & then concentrating on seeing what
shows up in the way of planes & cars for folks to look over, etc.
I'm asking William to have at least one forum be an on-the-ramp event
where he looks over & comments on the work of any planes that the
owners are willing to let him do that.
Those of us locally who are working on engines will have them &/or
parts on display foir people to look over & any hands-on forum that
William does will probably use those engines as 'props'.
William HAS said he will be happy to look over parts, etc. but this
is as much a pleasure trip for Grace & him as an 'appearance'.

Hans & everyone else,
My first recommendation for cleaning up parts is a 50-50 mix of
kerosene and MEK. Using a hard bristle brush (NOT a wire brush on
aluminum), this cuts through built-up grease & varnish like you would
not believe & leaves parts absolutely clean.
I've also used a steam gun with detergent on some parts, but be sure
you wash them completely free of detergent residues when you are
done. This gets things realy clean also, but not as pretty.
Personally, I don't like the way parts look when they are hot tanked
- the examples I've seen, at least on the aluminum parts, look
'etched' & I can't say what effect this has on the chemistry of the
metal, etc.
I store things the same way Hans does, a light oiling and wrap in
rags. The one exception, which I took William Wynne's advice on, was
to liberally spray the ground crank with WD-40 & then wrap it in
plastic.
I re-spray it about once every 6 months. Will be sending it off for
nitriding soon, so I'll clean it up as William recommends also.

Kip,
Good info, MEK is nasty stuff though, better use some protection!
WD 40 stands for Water Dispersant 40 days, it removes water and protects for
40 days.
Basically an Alcohol and mineral oil mixture, the alcohol aids the water to
evaporate and leaves behind a thin oil residue for protection
I would still use motor oil, after you thoroughly dry all parts, it last
longer as it leaves a thicker film.
Another tip, go to a Marine store and buy some fogging oil, comes in a spray
can and is purposely made for preservation purposes.
You spray it in to the carburetor of a running engine until it quits, then
you can store the engine for 6 months.
Keep on building.

Is like having a close friend that is a professional singer, invited to your

This is off topic, I know, but I just need to vent.
This evening when I got home from work, I find out I've been Robbed !!
That's never happened to me before. They cut the lock off my garage with bolt
cutters, and stole my brand new mig welder / argon tank, my Dad's old 1/2"
Sioux drill, some other electric tools, Air conditioner unit removed and stashed
behind the garage - probably with intent on coming back to get it. I keep
going outside with a flashlight & ball bat, to have a look around. I hope I can
find the s.o.b. before the police do. This really pisses me off more than you
can imagine !! There's nothing worse than a thief or a liar !! Police came
over and gave me some suggestions, and will be watching the pawn shops. I'm
going to go around to the pawn shops myself, and see if I can find anything.
Also going to put up one of those motion detector lights on the back of the
house. I don't know what else to do. Just thought I'd let ya all know that yes
indeed, there are thieves out there !!
