Piete groupers,
Aircoupe made it to Homer AK last night from Iowa. I'll post when get
travel log from pilot. If Aircoupe can make it, so can Pietes, with
carry of spare gas cans.

Gordon-- In 1999 Steve E. and Duane Woolsey flew Piets from Utah and have
pics from over 10,000 foot peaks crossing
the mountains. A/C systems reportedly were working great during that
period of flight.
Steve E. has a 65 hp Piet and Duane flew his Subaru powered...but sold it
while in Wisconsin.

Flying the Alcan Part Deux,
Had a couple beers with pilot Wayne Sapp, neighbor of Kenny on this user
group. Flight took 5 days, two extra days waiting for weather to clear
between Ft Nelson BC and Watson Lake YT. GPS measured ground speed thru
Dakota was 54 mph, tad of a headwind., was being passed by everyone on the
ground. Able to hook up with couple guys flying 172's up to AK in FT Nelson
and they flew as trio safety buddies on to AK. Ole Aircoupe is 1946, looks
great except the slight hail damage from one of the lumpy rainstorms over
the mountains. Sapp did all his homework for the trip, videos available via
Airspruce. Most altitude needed was about 6000' thru mountain passes
between Ft Nelson and Watson Lake. This is the only place you really need
to fly in the valleys and believe the GPS when you hit the Liard River area,
not turning the wrong direction like Wayne did, for a short excursion into
the real wilderness of the Yukon, away from the paved landing strip, aka
Alcan hyway. Believe a couple Piete could make trip easily but fuel load
maybe problem. Aircoupe has room for ca. 25 gals of fuel, C-75 burn at 4+
gal/hr. Wayne indicated got a little spooked when ceiling closed down to
his tailfeathers. Canada requires flt plans on all legs but tower opens and
closes for you and very helpful for weather/route planning. Couldn't say
enough good things about FBO's and Canada controllers. Even though guilty of
flying a storebought spamcan, Wayne wore a Piete Cherry Grove? MN Flyin (too
many beers to remember, it was Cherry something and for sure MN) shirt for
our saloon hopping tour of Homer, heart's in the right place. Gonna take him
fishin' tomorrow, if the trip didn't scare him maybe a day on the choppy 37F
waters of Kachemak Bay will.

Anyone checked the price of fuel in B.C. and Y.T. lately? I checked today
and the price 110 LL on average was 4.60 per gal. the Canadians measure car
gas in litres I am not sure about aircraft.
This is a very doable trip and the Alaska Airmen's Association has a book
about it, and a log to sign once you make it to Anchorage.

Subject: | Pietenpol Landing Gear |
I had an occasion to look at Mike Luther's Pietenpol project here in
Anchorage.very impressive too.
He is using a landing gear set up that is contained in a square frame. I
recently obtained some landing gear parts from another builder and they
consist of a brace across the bottom of the fuselage at the connect
point
for the landing gear uprights on a split gear set-up. What is the best
possible scenario for the split gear with bungees? Is this strong
enough?
Mike's set up was complete and very strong looking with the Pitts
springs in
place of the bungees.
Any other builders want to weigh in on this one? I am getting ready to
put
the fuselage on the gear so now is the time to tweak it if necessary!
