Though I support the young eagle program, I think we all need to be
realistic about its impact. How many of those kids will have the means
to learn to fly, even if that airplane ride triggers the desire? Many
of those kids are so young that it might be over 10 years before they
are in a position to do so even if they want to and can. It might even
be nearly that long before many of them are even legal to solo. How far
down will GA have gone in that time? Ive seen nothing that gives me any
indication of a turn around. LSA isn't going to turn things around. In
fact it might send a few people out sooner than they might have
otherwise. If you risk losing your ability to fly LSAs, are you going
to try to get that 3rd class when you know you probably could, but there
is a chance a bureaucrat up the line might say no no, then you are
stuck. Pre LSA you had nothing to lose. Now you do. Just how many
airports out there have an LSA for rent? Not many thats for sure.

Mark,
When I was 8 years old, a young pilot treated my brother and me to a 15
minute flight in a Cessna 150. We each got a turn in the right seat. I
loved that first flight. I'll never forget that. 15 years later I found
myself flying helicopters in the Army. Now, I'm in the EAA arena and will
have an airplane until they stick me in the ground. Sharing the experience
of fying with kids does change lives. Don't "mis-underestimate" it!!
Do not archive.

Mine was not too different, but the catch is something now that is
totally different than back then. Now people are rightly asking, "Will
general aviation as we currently know it exist in 10 to 15 years?" Even
AOPA in a recent issue is extremely concerned about the drop in pilots.
I don't have the answer, but what we are doing now clearly isn't working.

I don't understand the words. Please re-phrase and/or explain the
risk of losing the ability to fly LSAs. I am going the LSP route and
am interested in all perspectives.
As for there being few airports with LSAs, that is true in metro
areas for sure. Out in the country or anywhere there are old Cubs,
Aeroncas, etc., there's still plenty. Very few for rent, though.
That's why you need a Piet these days! ;)
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
If the FAA med examiner rejects your 3rd class application due to some major
or minor problem, this is reported to the FAA in Okla. You cannot fly LSA
with a rejected 3rd class. If you get an instructors endorsement, have a
drivers lic. and never been tested by FAA med examiner, you can fly LSA as
long as YOU feel you're medically qualified. You are not at the mercy of
the FAA if you've never been medically tested for any class, to fly LSA.
Case in point- I've had a 3 or 2nd class medical for over 38 years. Last
medical the examinor found a heart atrial fib, that has hence been
corrected/controlled by meds. Based on the quirk in the FAA's LSA rules, I
cannot fly LSA unless I continue the 3rd. class med exam every year, that's
right, the 3rd class is only good for 1 year plus I have to provide 12 mos.
of blood thinner testing (at $65/pop) and a Holter monitor test yearly at
($650/pop). If I had never went to FAA med examiner and my private doc had
found the atrial fib and corrected with meds, and I had never gone back to
try for a 3rd class, I could forever fly LSA rules legally (meaning my
insurance company would have to belly up payment incase of an accident).
Now that I'm trapped into the pit of snakes call the FAA med. system, I
cannot ever get out and still fly.
Gordon

Gordon,
I'd check with AOPA and EAA on that interpretation. My understanding
from them is that once you re-gain your 3rd class medical, you can
fly LSA (as you point out). If you let it lapse, that if, if you
never re-apply for a medical again, you're good to fly LSA forever
because in the eyes of the FAA, you passed your most recent 3rd class
medical - it was not in a "denied" state at the time it expired. Now,
I was told this by the alphabet groups more than a year ago. Possibly
new interpretations have been made, but if you haven't personally
spoken with reps at EAA and AOPA, I think you should. I sure would
not rely on what some bozo on the the internet (hey! I resemble that
remark!) says.
An aside: Though I've always gotten great service from both groups,
my experience is that AOPA is a little better with medical issues and
EAA is a little better with technical/practical aviation issues. Just
my 2 cents.
Good luck
Jeff

Jeff,
My info, dictates and approvals comes from the FAA Regional Med. Flt Surgeon
directly in Anchorage. I guess each and every Region could have different
interpretations of the LSA rules, after all is said and done, it's the
government talking. So who knows what the actual intent of the LSA rules
were, it's how they are applied by individual bureaucrats who have life time
tenure on our payroll, and you have no recourse via the courts. But the
Regional guy rules in my case------- no "special" third class, no LSA. Go
to FAA med examiner once per year, pass the exam plus an EKG, show documents
that show protimes for blood thinner, have 24 hr Holter monitor results,
then maybe, just maybe the Regional Guy will feel generous and fork over my
3rd class. I cannot simply agree to fly LSA giving up the rights of the 3rd
class. I cannot legally fly without the 3rd class, even though someone
who's never had a 3rd class can if they meet the other simple rules for an
LSA. Hell, I'll fly anyway with or without his approval, but the problem
comes back to insurance weasel clauses. No 3rd class, have accident, the
insurance weasels no pay. So goes life.

Well I am 47 and that is what I am seeing most everywhere. Its actually
the greatest concern I have for the future of aviation. Those that are
young today learning to fly today are learning with the intent of being
airline pilots. Once they get that airline job, many if not most walk
away from general aviation. Very few are just learning to fly because
they want to learn to fly. Those that are, just are not the kid at the
fence anymore. They are old guys like us that are much more likely to
fly only a short time before a medical issue steps up and gets in the
way.

Well, I'm officially 55 years old today. I think I'll
celebrate with a
little present for myself, so I'm ordering Chuck's new video
on building
NX770CG ( http://nx770cg.com/Video.html ).
Let's see if I can stay awake until 10PM through all the
celebration ;o)
But hey, the best is yet to come... Saturdays are my day at
the hangar
working on the Piet, so Saturday will be my real birthday
present!

Pieters,
Please excuse me for butting in but this age bit has become increasingly
amusing. Since I am no longer a participating Pieter I really have no
right to
use this forum as a pulpit. However I just can't help but compare the
recent
comments concerning ages with the second Lieutenants doing WWII bragging
of
their dates of rank. As was commonly known that rank amoung 2nd Lts.
could be
closely compared with virginity amounst whore. No offense intended.
You'all
keep aging and building and send me a pic now and then of your
progress. I'm not
dead yet.

Awhile back I was asked by a man, who was checking out my Piet, if I
thought he was too old to start taking flying lessons. I told him that
if he needed to ask, he probably was. Being old is in the mind of the
beholder. Health at any age may limit our activity, but not age.

Southern Air Force Commander Corky is drei und achtzig 83, moving
"middle aged" to a new boundry. Just gettin' started on senior
citizenship, must be the mint julips. But in defense of LT's, the more
senior the commission, the more assumed, yet faulty, ideas about
authority. Since LT's have no effective domain over anybody in the
service, they compete among themselves for seniority.
Really should go change my really old underwear before the "Depends"

I have one year on you Oscar at 56. And it is a good point you make Mark
about the majority of general aviation and especially homebuilders being
us
old farts. But its not like EAA is not trying to do something about it.
They
had a huge KidVenture tent at Oshkosh this year and in addition to all
the
normal kid activities they had a sheet metal riveting section. I
couldn't
believe it there were kids as young as 6 years old doing pulled and
bucked
riviting to make a foot square rudder section that they could take home.
Their were as many girls as boys doing this and I talked to one kids dad
who
said it was so popular that they had been waiting two days to get their
kids
in there. I think if I would have done something like that when I was 6
I
would have gotten into homebuilding several decades earlier. Have to
give
credit to Vans who I believe donated all the riviting kits for the kids,
must have cost them a bunch.

As long as Honda, Ford, and John Deer keep coughing up big money to EAA so
they can pay lawyers to fight airport closings and "help" the FAA add some
common sense to the pilot certification rules I say bring them on.
