No they don't. Back when I was a much younger
man I worked summers in the local sawmill. A
couple of them I was a welder's helper. I remember
one Incident where we had been welding on the
greenchain roof. Both of us spent an hour prewetting
the entire area. After 1/2 hr welding we again
washed down the whole thing and watched it for
the remainder of the shift. Man was it wet! Three
hours later someone saw smoke. Some sawdust
that had been left in a corner caught fire from a
blob of molten metal off the cutting torch, ten feet
over and twenty feet down from where we were
working. The top layer was wet but underneath it
was still dry.
I only weld outside. I won't use any fire inside
except the captured propane torch that heats my
flute hole burning tool used to tune the finger holes.
There's no flying sparks from that and it has to be
done in a warm and controlled environment.
A flying spark can go an amazing distance. What is
it they say about grinding wheels? That it's a tool used
to fling the part your working on into the farthest
corner of your shop. Well, welding sparks go
farther!

This strap is used on the Jenny gear. It's in the F+G
manual from 1932. It is placed inside and on top of the
cross braces. It was one of us who decided to place it
outside directly under the LG/strut fittings. Somewhere
in the long past archives you'll find the original messages
relating to this.

Tell me if I am wrong here in thinking that since I am using the
Jenny type LG, these issues dont apply. The cross brace wires and the
bungees absorbing shock straight upwards shouldn't cause compression
loading in the same way. Am I correct about that?
Dick N.
Dick,
Yes, you are right on. I think this is the reason the strap
wasn't originally installed in the design. In fact I think B.H.P.
called it a 'Safety Strap' for the split axle gear.

Hello Everyone !
I am so glad I have discovered this fantastic forum ! Lots to learn and even more
insperation !
My project is progressing well, I still need to finish the cowl, control cable
installation, redo intrument panel and then cover. The powerplant is a Ford 2L
crossflow motor with a reduction drive, Yes, I know not an "A" but there are
no A's to be found down here ! It has the longer metal fuselage.
The registration is ZU-BDZ and will share a hanger once complete with my other
"toys", ZU-AVB a Streak Shadow (Jabiru powered) and ZU-AMV a KR2S (VW powered).
I will be creating a web-page for my baby soon, need to take some photos first.
Have a great day and safe flying,
Rudi

Rudi,
Someone else is in So. Africa with a Piete, 0-235 engine, can't recall name,
posted pics and discussion of first flight last year. If he's out there in
internet land, post up.

anyone want to or know of someone who would ferry a 46 Tcraft BC12-D from
South Bend, IN(sbn) to Mesa, AZ(ffz)
Tcraft has 55hrs SMOH, new interior, a solid 9 out of 10.
I am seriously considering buying it from my cousin but need to get it to AZ
and there's no way I can take time off work.

Hi Gordon,
Interesting, there is a Piet at my local flying field with a 0-235, it is quite
new and did change hands recently so it could be the same one !
Will try and get some more background on it.
Regards,
Rudi

Anyone out there have a good method for removing plywood bonded with T-88 to
from the side and bottom of a 25yr old Pietenpol fuselage built with Sitka
spruce? A landing accident splintered the plywood and broke the lower
longeron in two places near the forward landing gear attachment bracket.

Bill,
I've never tried it, but I hear that a Router with a flat cut bit can remove
the plywood & adhesive, and leave the longeron untouched. Naturally, you
should practice on some scrap. Use at least a 12:1 scarf joint on the longeron
-
the method is called out in the AC 43.13.
