Back when I was a much younger man I worked summers in the local sawmill. A couple of them I was a welder's helper. I remember one Incident where we had been welding on the greenchain roof. Both of us spent an hour prewetting the entire area. After 1/2 hr welding we again washed down the whole thing and watched it for the remainder of the shift. Man was it wet! Three hours later someone saw smoke. Some sawdust that had been left in a corner caught fire from a blob of molten metal off the cutting torch, ten feet over and twenty feet down from where we were working. The top layer was wet but underneath it was still dry. I only weld outside. I won't use any fire inside except the captured propane torch that heats my flute hole burning tool used to tune the finger holes. There's no flying sparks from that and it has to be done in a warm and controlled environment. A flying spark can go an amazing distance. What is it they say about grinding wheels? That it's a tool used to fling the part your working on into the farthest corner of your shop. Well, welding sparks go farther! It's in the F+G manual from 1932. It is placed inside and on top of the cross braces. It was one of us who decided to place it outside directly under the LG/strut fittings. Somewhere in the long past archives you'll find the original messages relating to this. The cross brace wires and the bungees absorbing shock straight upwards shouldn't cause compression loading in the same way. Am I correct about that? Dick N. Dick, Yes, you are right on. I think this is the reason the strap wasn't originally installed in the design. In fact I think B.H.P. called it a 'Safety Strap' for the split axle gear. ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 02:06:58 AM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: Bill Rewey's Pete From: "Scott L. I am so glad I have discovered this fantastic forum ! Lots to learn and even more insperation ! The registration is ZU-BDZ and will share a hanger once complete with my other "toys", ZU-AVB a Streak Shadow (Jabiru powered) and ZU-AMV a KR2S (VW powered). I will be creating a web-page for my baby soon, need to take some photos first. I am seriously considering buying it from my cousin but need to get it to AZ and there's no way I can take time off work. Bill Princell - Bill, I've never tried it, but I hear that a Router with a flat cut bit can remove the plywood & adhesive, and leave the longeron untouched. Naturally, you should practice on some scrap. Use at least a 12:1 scarf joint on the longeron - the method is called out in the AC 43.13. Chuck G. NX770CG
