      Hi Rudy,

Which engine are you using? I know what is in s. Africa would not be
here in Canada and vice versa. Is it the engine that started at 900
something and then grew and went crossflow? Are you using a reduction
system? The callout for my own project is the current all aluminum twin
      cam 2L.

      Hi Bill,

I am not sure about the history of the engine, I do know there used to be a 1600cc
as well. It is a basic 4 cylinder inline engine. It could well be that it
was developed from a much smaller engine over the years.

Yes, I am using a reduction drive, it is a 2.5:1 belt reduction.

      Happy building,
      Regards,
      Rudi

      Dan,
I ran into the same thing when I tried to mount my tires, and had to take them
to a motorcycle shop. I laced my own wheels and got them to within .003 of round.
When I got them back one tire was about 1/8 out of round. The guy at the cycle
shop said he was doing me a favor charging only $40.00 which he had quoted
, said if he charged it on actual time it would have been $80.00! He said the
tires, 90/100 Challenger by Kenda, are not normally used on such narrow rims.
I have the generic 21" aluminum rims seen on allot of Piets.

      Bill,

I've never tried it, but I hear that a Router with a flat cut bit can
remove the plywood & adhesive, and leave the longeron untouched.
Naturally, you should practice on some scrap. Use at least a 12:1 scarf
joint on the longeron - the method is called out in the AC 43.13.

I used the struts from Carlsons, if I recall they come in two sizes. I used the
larger one for the front struts and the smaller one for the rear struts.

These struts are extruded and they adapt well to bolting in aluminum key stock.
I used the key stock and high strength rod ends to the wings. I slotted the
keystock to match the fitting coming off the landing gear. Pretty simple.
The numbers that I ran show a more than adequate safety factor.

The aluminum have two advantages, weight and costs.

      John,
I supplied Buchannan's with just the hubs. I had them supply everything
else, meaning rims, stainless spokes and nipples, and lacing and truing. Jim

Markle, from this list, was kind enough awhile back to post a link to the
archives where he attached pictures of his wheels and a scan of his Buchannan's

invoice. This helped me alot. I don't have access to my paperwork right now

to do it. His invoice was dated 11/04, so his postings with the pics should
be in the archives shortly after that. He had tire and tube info on there
too. Jim, if you are out there, can you put up those links again for others?

My total owed to Buchannan's was about $780.00 as I recall. I bought the
tubes and tires from Tires Unlimited _www.tiresunlimited.com_
(http://www.tiresunlimited.com/) . I bought exactly the same ones Jim Markle did.

      Hi,

I too have installed the Carlson/Sky-Tek aluminum struts.

I requested that Carlson send me a copy of the strut end detail as it was
used on their 'Sparrow' design. It uses square aluminum bar stock, bored and
slotted to attach to the end fittings.

They were most helpful in providing the requested information.

P.S. Just finished fabricating the 'nose cone" for my A powered Piet.

Hi Lou...I've looked seriously at the Carlson struts but couldn't
imagine if the larger size stuts would "look" too big on the Piet. Do
they look okay as compared to the size the plans call for. I had thought
about running the smaller size on all four. Does anyone out there know
what size Larry Williams used on his?...Thanks Ed G.

I used the struts from Carlsons, if I recall they come in two sizes.
I used the larger one for the front struts and the smaller one for the
      rear struts.

These struts are extruded and they adapt well to bolting in aluminum
key stock. I used the key stock and high strength rod ends to the
wings. I slotted the keystock to match the fitting coming off the
landing gear. Pretty simple. The numbers that I ran show a more than
      adequate safety factor.

The aluminum have two advantages, weight and costs.

Chuck's right. I used a router to remove the entire plywood side. Once
you have the depth set it's quite easy. Scarfing in a new longeron was
      more of a chore.

Anyone out there have a good method for removing plywood bonded with
T-88 to from the side and bottom of a 25yr old Pietenpol fuselage built
with Sitka spruce? A landing accident splintered the plywood and broke
the lower longeron in two places near the forward landing gear
      attachment bracket.

        Bill,
I've never tried it, but I hear that a Router with a flat cut bit can
remove the plywood & adhesive, and leave the longeron untouched.
Naturally, you should practice on some scrap. Use at least a 12:1 scarf
joint on the longeron - the method is called out in the AC 43.13.
