I have the same problem on mine, Greg. I just replace the bungees each
year during the annual Condition Inspection.
You DO have "disaster preventers" on your axle, don't you? These are
short loops of cable around the axle and V-blocks that will prevent the
axle from going more than about 6" off the V-blocks if the bungees
break. Let me know if that is not clear and I'll send you a picture of
mine.

Dale and I looking for ideas / suggestions to prevent bungee chafing on
NX18235.
We have the Jenny style gear and the 1/2" bungees have been chafing on
the bolt heads and nuts.
I was out flying today and the plane felt somewhat "mushy" on landing.
Looked at the left bungee and saw one wrap cut about 3/4 of the way
through. Taxied gently back to the hangar.
We are considering using 3/8" bungees and using two independent wraps in
case one breaks.
Does anyone have an idea to keep the bolt heads / nuts from gnawing on
the bungees?

Greg,
I guess that is why Bernie showed rivets in the F&G Manual instead of bolts
down there by the bungees. I looked into getting some large rivets but I
couldn't set them with the rivet gun I had. I guess I'll use bolts like
everybody else. Larry Williams glued an additional oversize piece of ash on the
bottom of the bottom ash block to deflect the bungees outward so they would be
"away" from the bolts.

Hello Dan,
This is Shad Bell, my father and I were up at Poplar Grove during the Brodhead
fly in this year, We did not make Brodhead because of engine problems. One
gentleman stoped up and was building a piet and offered us help and Dad gave him
a mold for a nose bowl, just wondering if that was you. (I am TERRIBLE at remembering
names) If you see Steve Thomas tell him thanks again for letting us
use the trailer to tow our piet back to Ohio. You guys in Poplar Grove have
one of the neatest airports I have ever seen. Hope to stop in again next year
on our way to Brodhead.

Hi all,
I am traveling to Hammond Indiana just outside Chicago, I was looking to visit
another piet builder either complete project or one underway for pics and information
as I continue my pre build research. Anyone in the area interested in
showing or answering questions, please advise.

No that was not me, and I was unaware that there was another Piet builder
here at Poplar Grove. Rack your brain and see if you can remember who it is.
Next time I see Steve Thomas I will surely say hi him for you. He is indeed
a great guy.

If you are building a Pietenpol with a Corvair engine and are needing a cowling
please contact me. I have (with the assistance of Dan in the Twin Cities) re-created
the original nose bowl and cowling of the last original Pietenpol. It
is professionally made using a very tough fiberglass. Nice gel coat covering
and ready for you to final trim and fit to your liking. It is a two piece set-up.
If you are interested please contact me so I can complete a run.Very cost
effective and saves us all time in building.

Brad Stottlemyer is a mechanic at Poplar Grove. He is a good friend of mine,
blond, properly sized in height (about 57), 35 and building a Piet. Lives
in Lake Geneva and works at Poplar Grove. I wonder if that is who you are
thinking about. FYI he does not have a computer.

Subject: | Spruce and Model A engines |
Hello Everyone,
Years ago I started a Piet, but put construction on the back burner as I
got wrapped up with business and raising kids. Now I have time to get back at
it.
Does anyone know of a source for spruce besides Wicks or Aircraft Spruce?
A while back, I heard of guys buying from a lumber yard or saw mill in the
northern US (I'm pretty sure it was the US).
Also, I need a line on a Model A motor, flight ready if possible.
Thanks in advance for your help. Nice to be back.

I have been flying with goggles on my forehead, not actually over my
eyes. I have always thought of them as being ready for emergency, but
lately I'm wondering about leaving them behind. I wear glasses and my
windshield is big enough to block wind. Does anybody have a safety
opinion on this?
Today was probably the best flying day I've had all year.
Great day to fly and watch the fall colors. Nice to fly over the lakes
at 100ft. Coming to an end soon around MN & WI.

You may be thinking of Western Aircraft in Calgary, Canada. I bought a
spruce kit from them a few years ago. It is still sitting in my hangar in
Perry, NY and is for sale.
I think that there was also a lumber yard in Oshkosh that sold spruce.

I think the answer is to find an alternate way of fastening to eliminate
exposed threads and nuts and then covering them with thick leather.

Dick,
Do your glasses have a safety strap to keep them on your head? I would
be hesitant to fly without my goggles fastened securely to my helmet.

I do wear the helmet and glasses tuck in there pretty securely.
Thinkinking more about it, it's probably a good idea just in case of
windshield damage.
On your bungee question, I re counted my wraps of true 1/2", it's 3
wraps, then 2 more. Gives me just the right amount of spring. If you
want to try 3/8" I have a bunch you can have. I got up to 9 wraps of
3/8" and was still too soft. The bundle got to look like a mess.
