On my last flight I almost lost my head phones for the radio because I
had them on the outside instead of having the goggles on last to hold
everything on.Lesson learned. When you pop your head out around that wind
shield you could loose anything not tied down including your glasses and
that could be an expensive thing to do.I have the focal units on my
goggles that take the plase of my glasses.I got them from Aircraft
Spruce but I got a letter afterward saying they were on ebay for next to
nothing.I find they are excellent in the case of replacing glasses just
used for reading.I need them to read instruments.

I have been flying with goggles on my forehead, not actually over my
eyes. I have always thought of them as being ready for emergency, but
lately I'm wondering about leaving them behind. I wear glasses and my
windshield is big enough to block wind. Does anybody have a safety
opinion on this?
Today was probably the best flying day I've had all year.
Great day to fly and watch the fall colors. Nice to fly over the lakes
at 100ft. Coming to an end soon around MN & WI.

Good Piet flying weather is just arriving in North Carolina. I flew
mine yesterday evening - 73 degrees F, dead calm wind, trees just
beginning to change color, lot's of folks out on the area lakes. Just
perfect.
Lot's of good fly-ins coming up this month, then it will start getting
too cold to be really enjoyable.

Greg,
What about using clevis type bolts near the bungees? I believe they are of
the same strength as regular AN bolts. This would solve the problem on the
outsie at least. I think it would look good too, more like rivets.

Thanks, Dick. I might take you up on your offer. I just need something
to get me through the next few weeks of flying weather. It's killing me
to be grounded with this great weather we've been having.
Cheers,

I do wear the helmet and glasses tuck in there pretty securely.
Thinkinking more about it, it's probably a good idea just in case of
windshield damage.
On your bungee question, I re counted my wraps of true 1/2", it's 3
wraps, then 2 more. Gives me just the right amount of spring. If you
want to try 3/8" I have a bunch you can have. I got up to 9 wraps of
3/8" and was still too soft. The bundle got to look like a mess.

Dick,
Do your glasses have a safety strap to keep them on your head? I
would be hesitant to fly without my goggles fastened securely to my
helmet.

Up here in cold Canada we start flyin at that temp.Great for lift.We
wear gloves and bomber jackets with long underwear.Great stuff! They even
sell heated boots now although I'm not fond of using boots to fly with
because I can't feel the rudder peddles properly.Actually I'm just
putting ya on.I'm getting ready to put her away for the winter.Change
the oil and drain the gas out of her.But you do get a great lift at
these temps if you can stand it and as you say it does get rather
unenjoyable.

Subject: | axle safety cable stop |
Guys,
Something to be aware of regarding the axle safety cable. If your
bungees ever give out, the axle has some room to build up some speed
before it hits the cable. This really puts a strain on the nicopress
and I read in an old newsletter about a guy who lost his bungees and the
nicopress gave way and his axle came through the bottom of the fuselage.
So, I'd reall think about securing those cables well, maybe two nicos.

I've flown my Pietenpol in temps as cold as 29 degrees F. Takes a bit
to get it started at those temps, and all I could think of as I was
flying it was "Like the tomcat said as he made love to a skunk - I've

beginning to change color, lot's of folks out on the area lakes. Just
perfect.
Lot's of good fly-ins coming up this month, then it will start getting
too cold to be really enjoyable.

Dick N.

Hadn't heard anything about either fly-in. I'll be in Oregon this
weekend, visiting the Van's Aircraft factory to fly the prototype RV-10.
The weekend of the 14th I've already planned to fly my Pietenpol to two
different fly-ins in North Carolina. PF Beck, are you going to bring
your Pietenpol to the Chapter 297 fly in at Burgaw, NC?

You're in the wrong part of Canada, my man! Hahahaha
Those Rocky Mountains are good for something, like
keeping all that cold on the other side! :-)
