John don't let medical problems stop your dreams. The Pietenpol
qualifies as a light sport aircraft. If you have not been denied a
medical and have a valid driver's license, you can fly it.

      Hi Pieters:

Problems getting a medical certificate force me to give up my Piet
project. I never cut any wood but did accumulate a large library of
manuals and books from the EAA, the old CAA, General Motors/Corvair,
etc. I have 17 titles, too many to list. Included are all of the
Bingelis books from the EAA. I have Corvair related titles including
William Winn's Conversion Manual. I also have both the Pietenpol and the
Grega version plans. I don't know if it's possible but I'd like to sell
the whole package to one person. If you have been lurking out in the
weeds now is the time to start. I'm located just north of Boston. If you
are in this area, come on by and take a look!

Rather than clutter up the Matronics server with a long list (3 pages)
and create unnecessary traffic, I'd be happy to provide anyone with a
list. Shoot me an email at jayejay@comcast.net .

      Regards,

      John Joyce

Ron, you need to go to Hershey today. I was there yesterday at the car
show and there must be at least one million (no exaggeration) model A
engines and all of the parts you could ever want.

please contact me. I have (with the assistance of Dan in the Twin Cities)
re-created the original nose bowl and cowling of the last original Pietenpol.
It is professionally made using a very tough fiberglass. Nice gel coat covering
and ready for you to final trim and fit to your liking. It is a two piece set-up.
If you are interested please contact me so I can complete a run.Very cost
effective and saves us all time in building.

Don't give up! I had problems getting my medical in 1996 when i started flying
at age 18. I am now 28 and just started flying my father's piet this past spring.
It took me about a year to get my medical streightened out but now that
I have it it is a lot eaiser to "renew". If I ever suspect I would not pass
a 3rd class I will just let it expire and go sport pilot. It is all up to you,
but if you really want to keep flying, and build a piet go for it. By the time
you get the piet done your 3rd class medical should be strieghtened out. If
you did not get "denied" or get a failed physical letter from the FAA you are
still leagle to fly sport pilot with no other action required. If you just
suspect you will not pass then do NOT go take another faa physical.

Just my 2 cents worth, good luck.

Sad thing is Light Sport might be ending more flying careers than its
starting. If you think you MIGHT have a problem the smart thing is to
not try, but in reality you very well may have no problem at all getting
a medical. Yet rather than take a chance they don't try with good reason.

Most people at some point develop medical issues that come with life.
Some are not hard for the FAA to deal with, but many can be very
unpredictable in the response you get from the FAA. Your family doctor
or your own doctor won't have a clue about the FAA paperwork. They
don't know what's allowed and what isn't. What forced me out of the air
was some eye surgery that left me with a partial vision loss in one
eye. Im legal to drive without glasses. Everyone else tells me Im
healthy. They FAA says you either have 2 eyes with normal vision or
only one eye. To get certified with one eye means a great deal of
paperwork, and a medical flight test. The medical flight test alone
would likely cost more than I can afford. That does not count the tests
that would be needed which may or may not be covered with insurance.
That is assuming that they do not consider the risk of a reoccurance to
be so high as to deny me then I am totally out of luck. Yes there is
some guidelines, but each case can be at the mercy of the person looking
at it. Blood pressure, heart conditions ect are other areas where its
just not that cut and dried.

I might be willing to try it IF light sport didn't exist. Try renting a
LSA? Around here its nearly impossible and if you do find one its
condition is likely to be suspect. It left me looking at building,
which Id really rather not do either but likely I have little choice if
I continue to fly at all. Right now Im not flying till I get
relocated and see what is in the new location.

Several years ago in the Buckeye newsletter there was a Piet called
Poplar Piet. It had a 2.5 Chv 4 banger. I think it is an engine used in
S-10 pickups. The big thing about the airplane and this article was that
the bulder found a Poplar tree, cut it down, sawed it up , milled it and
built the airplae from it. I could have cared less about that. I wanted
to know everything tere was to know about the engine conversion, but
nothing was ever said about (the most important part ) that. It flew a
lot, even by a guy who was on the list for a while, but did't know much
about the engine. The airplane was later crashed with a fatility. they
suspect the passenger somehow ran a fowl of the thtottle linkage just
after take off. I would have loved to known more about that conversion.

      Mark,
Lots of good points. Guess I'm lucker than most as my Dr. is also a pilot
and seems to have a good handle on what the FAA will and will not.
If you don't want to build then why not buy one already built? Lots of
really good ones out there for less than you can build one for.
      Just a thought.

Here as the dimensions of the cowlings finished.

The smaller cowling (bottom) is 7 deep X 20 long X 26 wide at the widest point.
The larger cowling (Top) is 13 deep X 22 long X 29 wide.

As for the final pricing...Great News! Because of all the demands for cowlings...the
price is $274.32 plus shipping. Much less then I original quoted.

I will start the manufacturing process next week so I have plenty of sets in
      stock!

Any question please contact me and I will be in touch as soon as possible.

Well its the nature of the beast. Id rather buy if I could, but because
its experimental anyone able to get hull insurance at a price thats
reasonable so it could be financed? Never seen anyone that would write
it. I don't have any tail wheel time either, but I wasn't a rookie
either. A former flight instructor with about 2000 hours flight time in
over 50 different makes and models, but even that with no tail wheel
time Id likely be tough to insure for more than liability. Can't even
fly a 150 now, and that still takes some getting used to to type even
      after about 2 years.

The building might be a form of financing.

      Hi Shawn,

I saw your posting on the Pietenpol list regarding winter flying and it
brought back memories of some mighty cold winter days when I used to fly
my Piet on skis. In fact, I flew its initial test flights on skis in
November 1970...but I was younger and tougher then.

As you observed, the Pietenpol is an excellent skiplane with good lift
at low speeds. It is easy to make good landings because one can hear the
heels of the skis dragging on the snow surface. Or, by watching your
shadow when the sun is off to one side (at a typically low angle in
winter), one can "cheat" a little.

Did you make your planned trip out to B.C. this past summer?

The poor little Midget Mustang is still sitting in that hangar, covered
with dust and bird droppings. Did that fellow ever come to look at it,
or get in touch with Brad?

Good to hear you are still actively flying the Pietenpol. I flew mine
for only about 15 hours over the summer. I'll maybe fly it this weekend
and change the oil. If the weather is favorable, I'd like to fly it on
November 15th to mark the 36th anniversary of its first flight.

      Cheers,

      Graham
