Chet Peek's new book, "The Pietenpol Story", features a photograph
credited
to Grace Ellen Wynne of the Corvair powered "Last Original" Pietenpol,
built
by Bernard Pietenpol, on the cover.
The book is available from Chet Peek; I just got my (autographed) copy
and
have not yet read it but it will make for good winter reading by the
fire.
You folks in Florida and San Diego- don't try to figure out what a
fireplace
is because you'll never need one. We barely even use ours here in south
Texas.

Subject: | Adhesive question |
Has anyone tried, or have experience with TiteBond III adhesive in the build ?
Its been suggested by a friend but I haven't seen or read anything from builders
that may support the use or experience with it.
I would be curious to get your feedback on the Tite Bond III system as opposed
to the tried and true adhesives being used.

Subject: | wing strut failure |
--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Oscar Zuniga" <taildrags@hotmail.com>
I think I've found a reference to Pietenpol wing strut failure, to go with
the recent thread on aluminum struts and jury struts and all that. Chet
Peek's book, discussing Bennie Skaarberg's Model A powered Aircamper, gives
Pietenpol's comments following the fatal crash: "Pietenpol and other
witnesses later revealed the cause of the crash was actually the failure of
the wing struts. Skaarberg had tried to do a loop, fallen out of the
maneuver at the top, thus putting a reverse load on the struts, and the wing
came off."
Doesn't say whether Skaarberg's airplane had jury struts installed nor are
there pictures of the airplane other than the mangled heap of wreckage, but
apparently the comment regarding negative G's was based on this incident.
The aluminum strut substitution would seem to warrant some engineering
analysis not just in tension, but buckling failure modes in compression when
compared with the equivalent 4130 streamlined tubing struts.

Subject: | A65 oil filter screen |
--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Oscar Zuniga" <taildrags@hotmail.com>
My thanks to whoever it was that suggested inspection of the oil screen
contents on the A65. I had really not wanted to bugger up the square head
on the oil screen cover on mine anymore than it already was from 50+ years
of service, but knew it would have to be taken out for inspection sooner or
later and every tool in my box was tending to slip on the corners. So a
machinist friend of mine made me a square-head socket with a 3/8" adapter so
I could use a standard ratchet on it without further messing up the corners
of the square head, and also dressed the corners of the cap to give the new
tool an excellent purchase on all four faces and corners of the square head.
Per your suggestions on this great list, I carefully pulled the screen and
washed it out in a coffee filter with avgas, let the liquid evaporate, and
found only some minute particles of dust and a few pieces of the usual
crud... nothing shiny or metallic. This A65 is good to keep flying, and now
I have a quick and reliable way to pull the screen without resorting to
measures that knock the corners off the square head again.
And no, I don't have any of these for sale. It's a one-off piece, and he
engraved it, "Screw-Off Tool Co."
