My friend Mark went by Carl's to look at some tools that he bought and found
out that the airframes are stored elsewhere so he didn't get any pictures.
However, the Ford engine was there and did get some pictures which I've put
on my website, at
http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/Carls.html
I can get more information as needed, but I'm a thousand miles away and it
would be better to work directly with Mrs. Vought. I understand that a Piet
builder named "Ray", flying out of Hazel Green, AL, has pictures and info on
Carl's projects but I don't know how to contact him.

Richard and Kathryn,
To bad you weren't down in Anchorage last night, the EAA Chapter 42
meeting
was at my house examining the engine possibilities for use on the
Pietenpol
that I am building in my garage.
My plans have the engine mount for Corvair and Continental engines, but
I
too am looking at the 0-235 as a possibility. Perhaps someone out there
can
give us lead about the engine mount and installation details.
An FAA DAR here in Anchorage told me that the 0-235 weighs more than the
Continental engines in the same category.
My question to the list is how much more does the 0-235 weigh than a
Corvair
retro-fit engine, or are they equal? +/-
Due to concerns about carb ice I have pretty much tubed the Corvair
idea,
although if I was flying in the Lower 48 I probably would go that
direction.
I plan on converting the Corvair engine anyway for another project after
the
Piet is flying.
Regards,
Rob Stapleton

Richard,
I have a 0-235 on my Quasi-Piete, works great with heavier pilots. Had to
custom make the motor mount. Started with firewall holes and made jig to
put the CG of the engine where needed away from holes. Then using jig that
set the distance from firewall to CG fabricated the motor mounts cups on
engine, using 4130 steel 5/8". 035 thickness made all the runs between the
firewall mounts and the engine mounts. Finally cross braced and gusseted
so didn't interfere with placements of stuff on accessory case of engine.
Maybe have plane in Homer Ak next summer but now it's in FL.

I'd be real surprised if somebody hasn't already hung a Lyc O-235 on a Piet
somewhere. My understanding is that they run about 240 lbs. whereas there
is a post in the archives about a Piet with an EA-81 Subaru with redrive
that weighed about 250 all-up, and there is plenty of documentation to show
that the Corvair in flying trim will weigh about 240, so the Lyc seems to be
in the same weight class.
What does that Rotec Radial weigh?

Where can I buy the wood to get started? I have sent 3 emails to Aircraft Spruce

minutes to speak to someone and they said they would check on the wood and prices
and call me back but they haven't. That was 2 days ago and now I do not want

TJ,
I bought all my spruce from A/C Spruce You need to get one of their
catalogs and start making a list. You will need to give them a little time to
cut
the pieces you ordered. The only pieces that took much time were the 1" x
4-3/4" x 15' spar pieces. But I think I had everything in about 3 weeks or a
month. I have found A/C Spruce to be a good and reliable source. I know
Wick's here in Illinois has spruce also that you can order out of their catalog,
but I myself have to pay Illinois sales tax, so I avoid them only for that
reason.

Hi TJ,
I have found it best to fax Aircraft Spruce with my orders. If you call
early you will get through right away. Mondays are really tough to get
through. I have bought all my wood through them with no problems, and they
have always cut and shipped within the week.
Cheers,
Dave

I used both Aircraft Spruce and Wicks for my wood. I got good product
from each of them, but found Wicks much more responsive. Prices are
roughly equal between them.

TJ,
and the Aircraft Spruce website is: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/index.html
There's McCormick Lumber in Madison, Wisconsin (608-244-4741 - $8.50 per board
foot), and there's Condon Lumber in Stormville, New York.
Good Luck.

shows a GN1 spruce kit, (no ply) not the exactly the same thing but
close and gives you an idea cost.
this list includes the spar stock (items 19 &20)
Back when they listed a Piet spruce kit the spar stock was not included
and the price reflected this.

I ordered my rib capstrip, some 1/2 X 1/2 spruce and Finnish Birch plywood from
Aircraft Spruce and after a more than a reasonable number of exchanges got them
to replace 1/3 of the capstrip in my order. Also, they have a warehouse in
Georgia and one in California. If you go with them make sure your order ships
from the closer of the 2 (they originally tried to send my order from CA and
when I straightened that out saved about $50 in shipping). The other 2 wood
plane builders in my area swear by Wicks and that will probably be where I get
the rest of my supplies. When I was trying to figure out how to deal with this
a few others reported similar experiences with them.
An example of the capstrip I received ...
http://www.flyingwood.com/index.asp?page=8&filter=0
They didn't appear motivated to help me until I sent them that link and they saw
that the site seemed fairly active. It's really a shame when it comes to that!
I wouldn't be so sour on them if they simply replaced the wood no questions
asked. But I too left many unanswered calls and was told I would be contacted
and never was. I think they're probably OK for stuff other than wood but
the long wait and the low quality is something you don't have to worry about with
Wicks. (from what I'm told)

Hi TJ
Go to your local lumberyard and pick up/select douglas fir and use it. It is stronger,
easy to work and only about 20% heavier and since wood is a small part
of the Piet it only adds about 25 pounds. It is also about 25% the cost of spruce.
My two cents; my Piet is all Doug Fir. Cheers, Jim

I have a Ford Model A engine with a Slick mag model number 4032 left
hand with a serial number 401006. I need a cross referance list number
for a replacement mag.
Also the number 3 on the data plate looks to have been changed.
I would like to know what types of mags others have used on there Ford
model A engines. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: | Phone number for Jim Corder (Hegy Props) |
Hi Pieters,
Does anyone have Jim Corder's phone number (of Hegy prop fame)? I've found several
old references on the 'net that sounds like he moved from Marfa to somewhere
else, & I can't find a current email address or phone number.
Have a beautiful 72 x 42 Hegy on the A-75, turns 2150-2200 on climbout and tops
out at 2400, so this prop is better suited for the A-65. I'd like to get the
rpm's up around 2400-2500 on climbout so it will run like the A-75 that it is.
Thanks in advance,

there was one around here many years ago with a Shaky Jake on it.
The guy flew it for years then got into other projects.
According to my Fliers and Gliders manual the A weighs 244 lb
flight ready so these higher HP engines coupled to a higher max
gross weight should be a much better deal. Especially if one doesn't
have to move wings and things too much.
