Subject: Pietenpol-List: A Pietenpol at Vimy Ridge?
I'll be filling in the details after we are done. My very old 1933
Pietenpol is going to be used in a Canadian film re-inacting the Battle
of Vimy Ridge in WW1.
We start filming this weekend and it should be quite an experience.
The aircraft will be depicting the role of reconnaissance aircraft in
the spotting of the German artillery and defenses in this historic
battle. It is to air on History Channel (I have no idea if you get it in
the USA) on April, 09, 2007. On the 89th anniversary of this campaign.
It will certainly be a lot different flying in ths battle....no one
will be trying to shoot me down.

Hello Listers,
One of the major new additions to the Matronics Email Lists this year was the addition
of a new and full function Forum Web Site at:
http://forums.matronics.com
The best part of these new Forums is that they are tied directly to the Classic
email distribution Lists! That also means that posts go in both directions.
If you post a message on the Forum web site, it will be cross posted to the respective
Email List. And, if you post a message to a particular Email List,
it will be cross posted to the same respective forum on the Forum site!
So, no matter what your content viewing pleasure is - either direct email distribution
or web-based GUI interface, you can have it at the Matronics Email Lists!
Won't you make a Contribution to support these Lists? It is your SOLE Contributions
that make their continued operation and upgrade possible!

Hi Mike: Good point about the X brace wires. I hadn't even thought about
those things. They set just in front of the compass. . Good timing too
because next Spring (warm weather) the first thing on my list is to
mount the wing, string cables, and make the lift struts. Leon S. Ks. Do
not archive.

Subject: | 'glass cockpit' and using sectional charts x-country |
Greg, Oscar, and Group,
Flying to Oshkosh and Brodhead from Cleveland I used a simple knee
clip board that straps around your thigh. I laid out the sectional
charts
that I needed, (at home) Scotch taped them together (that means you
consume a single malt while going thru this procedure) and drew my
course
line out. I cut the sectional on either side of my route wide enough
to fit the knee board----about 7 inches wide overall. Just folded up
the map to fit
the 'clipboard' and off you go. Moving the map to the next 'segment'
of the map is a bit tricky but you keep a firm grip at all times on the
folded chart
and keep it low in the cockpit as possible. I really found it to be an
easy way to navigate plus it gave you something to do during those long
two hour
flying legs. It was much more enjoyable in 2005 with Jack Phillips
beautiful green and cream Air Camper off my right side flying westbound
toward
Chicago and then north to Brodhead. (course we both had radios and gps
with us so the charts were merely with us for backup, reference, and
frequencies.)
Oh yes Oscar---about the only glass I have in my cockpit is a magnifying
glass in case I loose my reading glasses and need to read the CHART !

Subject: | charts in an open cockpit |
Hello guys, I found out how "fun" it is to fold and unfold in flight on my trip
to "Almost Brodhead" last summer. Flying from centralOhio and using the Chicago
sec from central IN was not too bad, but when I had to unfold the chart to
flip it to the other side of the chart, ...Man was that funny. No pitch trim
and dad is 30-40 lbs hevier and it is set up for him. I have to hold back pressure
to keep from diving, but unfolding a map and not letting it blow away
is a 2 handed job, as most of you know. I had to power back, pull the nose up
30 degrees hury and try to unfold, look out in a dive, pull up try again etc
etc. finnaly got it flipped over and landed at Poplar Grove. The people there
must have thought I was a nut because the chart looked like a pair of fringe
chaps, and I had to ask to make sure I was where I thought I was, they looked
at my map and chuckled a little. I'll do better next time. Hey Mike maybe next
year we can fly up togeather, meet at Van Wert
and follow rt 30 west.
fly safe

Mike,
Flew my Piet from Thomasville, Ga to Camden, Tn. using the same knee
board method with the cut strips of sectional charts. Works great. I
did have a cheap hand held GPS as a back up but didn't find I needed it
with all of the water towers around. Not long ago I was reading an
article in the EAA Sport Mag where the pilot wrote of doing a cross
country and wrote about having a sign in his cockpit that reminded him
to beware of becoming bored while flying. I could sure tell he wasn't
doing HIS crosscountry in a Piet.

Yeah, but having flown in what I think was that very airplane at Brodhead
last time around, I can say that if you do that, you oughta make it easily
removeable and stowable without any tools... I'm thinking "velcro" here. I
am about 6-1 and 230 lbs, and I nearly didn't get in OR out of the plane,
and I had to cross my legs underneath the seat the whole time, in large part
because that danged "moving map" was right where my left knee needed to be
if I sat anywhere close to normally. (It was still a great ride, even if I
was wedged in!) Have fun, but make sure such things don't get in the way of
utility... I can imagine this also creating a bit of a safety hazard in case
an emergency egress is necessary.
