There seem to be two types of people in every aspect of life, and this one's no different. Sometimes I prefer buying things ready to go, other times I want to do them myself. Wood is one thing I like to pick out myself. I never knew that until I started my other project, the Flying Squirrel, but now I know that I want to handle, select, cut, mill, and finish my own wood rather than have a precut bundle delivered to my door. Some folks will get a lot of pleasure out of locating, grading, measuring, ripping, planing, and sawing all their wood from rough-sawn planks. Others want to get a "wood kit" with everything pretty much there so they can grab a piece from the bundle, fit it to their jig, cut to length, and get busy building. If you want to make a big leap and see progress in a short time, purchase a wood kit from Wicks or AS&S and you'll soon have a "boat", or a stack of ribs, or some tail feathers to show for it. If you'd rather measure, shape, cut, fit, and personally make each piece of your airplane... then go out and find some likely planks and cut away everything that doesn't look like part of an airplane. Each builder will have to decide for his/her self... there is no right or wrong answer. Me, I like the smell of wood and I like the sound of woodworking tools. I'll go the rough-sawn route. I never knew I liked wood so much until I started seeing those nice pieces coming out the other side of the planer and table saw, perfectly to the dimension I made them. Wood is such a wonderful material to work with, and I guess that's part of the reason why Piets are such wonderful machines.
