Oscar, I just brought it up cause My 65 with 72-42 Sensinech<sp>, with just me in the plane will cruise along in the mid 80's @ 2150, and think top 90 at full bore. Not that speed it the main thing in a Piet. Way to go, Chuck ! Better smoke, hotter combustion gases. Wooo whoo ! All the better to see you with in the pattern too. I never thought about the smoke helping others see me when I initially installed it on the plane but many have commented on how well it helps them spot me around the airports. I usually give a puff or two before entering downwind and then on downwind. Sometimes the trigger gets stuck too when I fly down the runway at 95 mph about 10 feet off the deck. I have to look into that:) Mike C. do not archive

Dan, I would think you'd need at least an artificial horizon in your Ford Piet to have a smoke system since it would blanket you in smoke. (not to mention a fresh air respirator or you'll have a good case of WWI diarrhea from ingesting all that mineral oil:) I wonder if you could run one exhaust stack down inside the cowling and out the bottom ? I wonder how high the EGT is on a Ford ? Hmmmm..... Isn't that why some of the old airplanes (like the SE.5) had the exhaust extended back along the fuselage, to get the exhaust past the pilot? You could do your Model A Piet that way, eh? I have found that I've had to secure the screws on the brackets that hold the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer to the top longerons, apparently due to propeller slipstream buffet. They were working themselves loose so i epoxied them in. This leads me to believe that if you divert your Model A exhaust aft like that, you might end up with some smoke oil residue on your tail feathers as the propwash picks it up and swirls it around the tail. I had no tproblem with generic tapes. I even used the economy fabric from AS&S. 4 years ago it was about $3.10 a running yard. (wide enough for the Piet wing). Have you covered the tail parts yet? Assuming this is your first project, I would start with the small parts first. Covering is the most intimidating part of the project, but when you're done,,,the most rewarding. Oscar, Buzz jobs in a Piet should always be conducted downwind so you have the added effect of better groundspeed. A good buzz job can be accomplished from coming in on a normal approach and then adding power but I find that coming in on the downhill (with smoke on) is most effective. A really fun thing for me is to (search the pattern for other traffic well) do is to fly downwind the length of the runway and then do a big old roundhouse wingover after pitching out to the right on a 45 but doing a left wingover to landing. It is my version of what Leo Loudenslager used to do but within the capabilities and bounds of a 65 Piet ! Now if I could only get my engine to pop and crackle like those gorgeous P-51's do when going to idle during flare out ! Mike C. do not archive

Subject: new posting--- Pietenpol for Sale on Barnstormers
Hello, Well is better late than never, I have little time to check my mail... I Follow Marvin closely in Sport Aviation. He is one of the builders of the only 2 seater Flying Flea in USA. He is a great craftman, but he is not very young, probably he did not fly when he finished the Piet because lost his medical... If the Piet is as well built as the Flying Flea, is a great airplane. I dont know him in person, or had seen the Piet. Just got a couple of letters and photos about the Flying Flea by mail. Saludos Gary Gower. Mexico. "Cuy, Michael D.
