There are no piets and no builders in the Southern California, LA area? Although I find that hard to believe that such a popular design and build that no one has responded to my visit request, or no one is interested in a visit. Either way, with no response or willingness to host, I guess its just gonna be Jim Markle and I talking piets over beer in some obscure watering hole Monday night. Sorry no one responded , would have loved learning and sharing build info with our Southern California Brethren. John ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Subject: Tachometer - where do you find one
I have a Westach tach for the 1835 VW on my "Flying Squirrel" that runs off the magento P-lead (single mag on the VW). Mine includes an hour meter and also has range markings on it. A picture is at http://www.flysquirrel.net/panel/pnl02.JPG . While I realize that this particular tach won't work on a Corvair with points ignition, the point I'd like to get across is that Westach made my tach for me as a "special" but at no additional cost over what Aircraft Spruce wanted for a similar unit. I gave them the RPM range that I wanted, where I wanted the green/yellow/red markings and they did that for me. You can tell Westach what you want, what it runs off of, and they will make you a tach to your specs. There are several different dial sizes to pick from, too. Website is at http://www.westach.com My tach does have a fuse in it in the line from the magneto P-lead but I believe it's there to protect the tach from spikes from the magneto, not to protect the magneto from problems in the tach. The P-lead is essentially a ground wire to kill the magneto; not sure about the exact function of the fuse though. Hi Gardiner, Unfortunately, my plans at this point are to arrive at SNF on Monday morning (possibly Tuesday morning, depending on wx) and then depart on Thursday morning. It's possible I might depart on Friday but it would be pretty early Friday morning, as I've got a 10 hour trip ahead of me to get it back to North Carolina. Any chance you can get there by Wednesday? Tom, Possibly you could carefully cut away the fabric close to the screw heads. Then remove the screws, dimple the aluminum sheet around the holes, and install countersunk screws. A "dollar" fabric patch over each screw head should finish the job, and it should come out reasonsbly smooth. Good luck! Graham Hansen (Pietenpol CF-AUN)

Chuck You are right. It doesn't take much to make a difference in kids lives, especially if you see they are starting that way themselves. Someday they will see one of the great things that got them there is that teacher and that experience. Showing them that others care also adds to it. They will remember what they did and that it affected others. I had a High School shop teacher that I put on the same level as that. How many kids now get to learn to run a lathe, pour cast aluminum, fabricate sheet metal and other things that can be used to make things. Dick N. Dick, I got the pictures, too. That is a great idea you had about helping these kids with their aviation endevors. It also helps them realize what 'Airplane People' are all about !! After a high tech class on latex paint..........OK OK it was a show on the History Channel "Modern Marvels", They were talking about how they make, and used to make paints. I don't see any reason Poly spray would block any more light than latex. Poly spray uses aluminum oxide as a UV block, Most modern paints use Titanium oxide for uv protection. The old house paints used lead as a UV block, (although you might need an 0-470 in a piet if you want to use lead paint ha ha). Any way, watching that show taught me a little bit about the How's and why's of paint. If you are using latex you may even be able to stop by a Home Depot parking lot at 7 am and find a couple guys to paint it for cheap. Shad --------------------------------- It's here! Subject: Re: Latex paint class-- aluminum PolySpray no oxide
I think there might be a big difference here. The PolySpray has aluminum PARTICLES in it (a suspension), so you are putting (I think) 3 coats of aluminum under the finish paint, with the sole purpose of blocking UV. Relative to sunlight, it is almost like having an aluminum wing. OTOH, the latex paint with Titanium oxide is a wonderful white pigment which also blocks UV to a degree, as does all paint. All this said, I'd love to save money on paint.
