John---did you not see my posting about EAA Chapter 1279 about 60 miles
SW of LA who have a very nice Piet project going ?
For more info go here: There was an article in Sport Aviation
written by Steve Williamson (EAA 1279's President)
about the project in the March issue as well.

"If you would like to get involved, by all means, come out and join us
any Saturday morning from 8 to noon at the French Valley Airport - Bldg.
95, Hangar 15. See you there."

      Dick,

Great note. Thanks. I am sure the kids will gain an appreciation that they are
part of something bigger than they thought, and far bigger than all of us--
the continuation of the venerable heritage of this pluckly little aeroplane.
A quest for all of us, as a matter of fact.

What a great bunch of kids they are, too.

      John,
I live in Torrance Ca. and would love to show you my Piet project, but unfortunately, I will be leaving for Sun n Fun the same day you arrive. You might want to check out the EAA chapter at Corona airport. They have a Piet project that they have been working on. Here are a few pics that i took while out there one Saturday morning. http://www.gomerair.com/Photos/Eaachapter494/
I can get you a contact name and number of one of the members if you like. Just
      let me know.
Also, for the rest of you in So Cal, on April 28th and 29th, Flabob airport is having a pietenpol gathering. Check here for details. http://www.eaach1.org/images/pietenpol.gif

Every now and then someone asks if a Pietenpol can be fitted with a
canopy. Well, I just stumbled across a photo of one (as well as a bunch
of other Pietenpol photos I hadn't found before). Before you open the
link, brace yourself. This machine looks quite different - it has a
reeeeeeeallllly looooooooonnnnnnngg motor mount extension. While the
canopy idea makes sense for those of us up in the Great White North,
with it's short open cockpit flying season, I find the appearance of
this canopy really detracting. Maybe if it was easily removable - only
to be used when it's too cold out for anyone to be watching...

      Okay, take a look:

      Bill,

Thanks for the warning. My heart might not have stood it otherwise. Then I started
looking for the bugspray nozzles- the Piper Agrothingie has a canopy like
      that.

I suspect that the pilot weighed mucho, and with the canopy, needed that kind of
engine extension. I wooooooooooooonder how it handled. If it did, what a forgiving
      basic design!!!

Wisconsin seems too warm a spot to require butchering a Piet like that. Besides,
open cockpit is what it's about, IMO. Easy to say here, though, where we have
only "Summer" and a few months of "Other."

Thanks for the warning. My heart might not have stood it otherwise.
Then I started looking for the bugspray nozzles- the Piper Agrothingie
      has a canopy like that.

I suspect that the pilot weighed mucho, and with the canopy, needed
that kind of engine extension. I wooooooooooooonder how it handled. If
it did, what a forgiving basic design!!!

Wisconsin seems too warm a spot to require butchering a Piet like
that. Besides, open cockpit is what it's about, IMO. Easy to say here,
though, where we have only "Summer" and a few months of "Other."

wow looks like a high wing AG cat.

but while on the subject, check out the photo on page 41 of the latest
EEA magazine, the one with the article on the rebuid of the Comstock
Piet. Did anyone notice the grey tube structure sloping back from the
top of the cabanes behind the heads of the project participants? any
ideas as to what that may be? or am I just imagineering things here?
also doesn't that center section look rather small?

Still the same problem as before. Almost a year ago I use to be able to
see your page though it took a long time to load up, as I am on a phone
line. But now I get this odd behavior and cant seem to get on it. I use
both Internet Explorer and Mozila and both behave the same. Dont know if
it is my browser settings or ATT (my isp) sure would like to see your
progress. I am at a loss as I am a dummy whan it comes to these machines
so if anyone has any sugestions you can email me backchanel at
m.silvius(at)att.net so we dont eat up band with with this.
      thanks

Actually I've thought of doing up a Piet along the lines of the Corbin Cabin
Ace from the old flying and glider manual. It was a single seater. Very
cute. But with a two seater the view forward might not be so great. But
hey, you flew the cub from the back.
