Subject: Pietenpol-List: Sun 'n' Fun
Decided discretion was the better part of valor, or something like that.
I elected to give up on flying the Pietenpol to Sun 'n' Fun.
Yesterday was horrible, with multiple tornado warnings here in North
Carolina and bad wx all up and down the coast between here and Florida.
Today the sky is mostly clear, but the winds are forecast to be straight
out of the west at 25 knots with gusts to 45 knots! Even in Florida the
winds are forecast at 18 knots with gusts to 28 knots, again from the
west. Except for Lakeland, every airport I'm planning to land at has
north-south runways. Moderate turbulence all along my route, and even
though the winds aloft are in the 40 knot range, they are blowing across
my course and offer no benefit. By tomorrow evening a warm front with
showers and T-storms is forecast to be stretching across north Florida,
so I probably couldn't go tomorrow either.
Anyway, I booked a flight on Southwest Airlines and will fly down
tonight with Karen. I hope some Piets will make it there.

I'm glad to hear you're going to keep your airplane safe and sound in
your hangar, Jack. I kept watching the weather all weekend
hoping that front would move out to sea but the stubborn NE'aster kept
it hugging the shoreline. You just saved yourself two days
of total aggravation that would have seemed like 20 days.

Does anyone have personal experience with how smooth or rough the grassy
areas are off the sides of 9-27 at
Oshkosh by chance ? If someone were to land a small-wheeled
taildragger and then be directed to turn off into
the grass, do you think that there might be rough areas enough to catch
a main and cause some trouble ?
Thank you,
Mike C.

Mike,
I have landed on 36/18 at OSH and taxied off to the grass on the west side
with my Aeronca Sedan. I don't remember having any issues there. Can't say
for the other runway.

Hi Mike;
The grass on the south side of 9-27 is fairly smooth (smooth enough to taxi
a Mooney without any problem, and then have the nose wheel fail and come apart
(not from the grass) and still not hit the prop. I couldn't tell you about
the North side.
Cheers

To add to what Chris wrote and Corky "amen'd", I'd like to say- "just do
it!" No matter which design or refinements you want to go with, get
started. You'll never regret it.
The icing on the cake is flying the airplane, and I got to take my oldest
daughter up in 41CC yesterday for her first flight in an open cockpit
airplane. It was great. Photo of us at

Mike. I've taxied off onto the grass from 27 (headed to the left) in a
Pacer as well as a Seneca (low prop clearance) and felt very comfortable on
the grass in both aircraft. The EAA really does an outstanding job keeping
Wittman field maintained and ready for the "Fly-in after Broadhead". If you
are happy taxing around at Broadhead, you will have no concerns at Osh!
Hope to see you there.
