2 things I find really handy in my shop that weren't mentioned yet are the shop
vac and router. There are also a couple sanding tools that I didn't know if
I'd like, but simplified the job of leveling the pieces of wood that union under
a gusset. I used them all the time in making my ribs.

The router with a laminate trim bit is good for removing gusset overhang. I found
that if you make sure you leave a little overhang, then trim it down flush
with the router it looks really nice.

Good point about the router Glenn, another place when my router (and cheap
router table) came in real handy was routing slots in the the rudder and
elevator for the Vi Kapler hinges.

Were there pictures of that first flight (or of the completed Piet) posted
to the list? I don't get them through the digest version, so if someone
could email them to me direct, I'd appreciate it. And I have our EAA
Chapter's electronic scales back in our hangar so I can do a final, accurate
W&B on 41CC after the repairs. I'll post the results after I do the W&B
      this weekend.

Now on a lighter note... Two cajun hunters get a pilot to fly them to Canada
      to hunt moose. They
bag six. As the two cajuns start loading the plane for the return trip, the
pilot advises that the plane can only take four of the moose. The two
hunters object strongly. "Last year we shoot six and de pilot let us put dem
all on board; he had de same plane as yours. We got to take back all six
for to feed ever'body back home."

Reluctantly, the pilot gives in and all six are loaded. However, even with
full power, the plane can't handle the load and down it goes and crashes in
      the middle of nowhere.

A few moments later, climbing out of the wreckage, Bernard asks Sonnier,
      "Any idea where we is?"

"I tink we pretty dam' close to where we crashed las' year" says Sonnier.

I need to add mine up, but mine is somewhere around 500hrs. Virtually
no problems in the near 300 hours I've put on it. I generally fly it
just over 100 hours/year. I have no plans to slow down anytime soon.
My A-75 has near 900 hours on it now, and I've thought a little about
what I'll do when I get to/near TBO.

Once again, for all of those who do not subscribe to the real time
version of the list, and just get the digest (whish does not include
attachments), if you want to see the attachments, go to the Matronics
      Pietenpol forum:

Once you are there, add that site to your favorites, so it's easy to
      find next time.

As you go down the list, you will see a paperclip icon on the left hand
side to indicate which threads have attachments.

If you are getting a new table saw (or miter saw) blade I would recommend a
DIablo (96 tooth for a 10 inch). Expensive but makes a big difference with
the softer woods especially when you need to rip long leading/trailing edge
or capstip. Diablos are about half the thickness of normal blades too.

Was just thinking that it's just over three weeks till the big weekend,
and that most who are planning to attend will likely have made plans by
now. So, just out of curiosity I thought it might be interesting to hear
who is planning to attend (flying or driving). I know a few new Piets
are planning to be there - I am looking forward to seeing Don Emch's Air
Camper "in the flesh", and hopefully Gary and Shad Bell can get their
Corvair running reliably in time. Roman Bukolt has said he will be
flying his Piet. Don recently said he plans to fly in with Frank
Pavliga, and I imagine Bill Rewey will be there.

So I'll start the thread going by saying that I will be attending, with
my 16-year old son, and we will be driving (12 hrs each way).

      Who's next?

      Hi John,

glad to know you made yours wider. Other than the width changes. What other changes
will you have to make with the support struts? Do they just attach at
a wider point on the center wing section...?

I have not begun building yet as I am a newbie.

What will you have to change where the wing attaches..anything?

      Greg..

I will be working in Chicago and Hammond Indiana at the beginning of the
week, then Rockford Thrusday and Friday afternoon. with the exception of a
Saturday morning meeting I am hoping to drive out and spend the better part of
      the
day before flying back on Saturday night.

Hope to see you all then

      Greg,

Although still working on the fues, I can anticipate a wider wing center
section and width of cabanes in addition to changes in the landing gear, struts

and metal parts to meet the width at the attachment points. I too am new to
the build and am like everyone else learning as I go trying to solve problems

as I am able to anticipate them. Working through issues as I encounter them.

I am certain there are many more areas impacted by the decision that are not
intuitively obvious to the new builder but will certainly be the cause of
much gastric distress as I progress.

But I will be making a list of challenges and solutions as I encounter them.

      John

If you make it wider or longer then it's no longer a Piet. You have to
call it a Stretch Piet or Jumbo Piet.Any changes you make you have to
deviate from the original name;-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO( I am waiting for
a CessPiet to come out just to see what it looks like!

Frank Pavliga e-mailed me and said he and Don E. were flying to Brodhead
and there may be (if they can get a sign off) a one-of-a-kind
flying Pitcairn Autogyro there for the Piet fly-in enroute to
      Oshkosh......but that is iffy.

I will be at Brodhead via auto then on to Oshkosh.

Was just thinking that it's just over three weeks till the big
weekend, and that most who are planning to attend will likely have made
plans by now. So, just out of curiosity I thought it might be
interesting to hear who is planning to attend (flying or driving). I
know a few new Piets are planning to be there - I am looking forward to
seeing Don Emch's Air Camper "in the flesh", and hopefully Gary and Shad
Bell can get their Corvair running reliably in time. Roman Bukolt has
said he will be flying his Piet. Don recently said he plans to fly in
with Frank Pavliga, and I imagine Bill Rewey will be there.

So I'll start the thread going by saying that I will be attending,
with my 16-year old son, and we will be driving (12 hrs each way).

My pietenpol is the wide-body version pietenpol - plan number #1933-29.WB. This
is one of the original wide-body plans. Creates a 27" rear cockpit with all the
same hardware, fittings, and simple modifications to improve for pilot size.
Paid the same price as the long Piet.

          Greg,

Although still working on the fues, I can anticipate a wider wing center section
and width of cabanes in addition to changes in the landing gear, struts
and metal parts to meet the width at the attachment points. I too am new to the
build and am like everyone else learning as I go trying to solve problems as
I am able to anticipate them. Working through issues as I encounter them.

I am certain there are many more areas impacted by the decision that are not
intuitively obvious to the new builder but will certainly be the cause of much
      gastric distress as I progress.

But I will be making a list of challenges and solutions as I encounter them.

      on all aspects...

So, other than Bill Rewey, are we going to have ANY Pietenpols there?

Mind you, I'll still come for the companionship and the pork chops

Was just thinking that it's just over three weeks till the big weekend, and
that most who are planning to attend will likely have made plans by now. So,
just out of curiosity I thought it might be interesting to hear who is planning
to attend (flying or driving). I know a few new Piets are planning to be there
      - I am looking forward to seeing Don Emch's Air Camper "in the flesh", and
hopefully Gary and Shad Bell can get their Corvair running reliably in time.
