Greg, Although still working on the fues, I can anticipate a wider wing center section and width of cabanes in addition to changes in the landing gear, struts and metal parts to meet the width at the attachment points. I too am new to the build and am like everyone else learning as I go trying to solve problems as I am able to anticipate them. Working through issues as I encounter them. I am certain there are many more areas impacted by the decision that are not intuitively obvious to the new builder but will certainly be the cause of much gastric distress as I progress. But I will be making a list of challenges and solutions as I encounter them. John ________________________________ See what's free at AOL.com <http://www.aol.com/?ncid=AOLAOF00020000000503> . I have not heard of these plans before. Where do they come from? I have also read other posts that refer to serial numbers - but the Orrin Hoopman drawn Air Camper plans sold by the Pietenpol family do not have serial numbers. Where do these serial numbers come from? Maybe the Grega plans have serial numbers. Ken, Not to be though of as a smart donkey, my first response was the concept of simple math... 24+3=27" interior dimension. 27+1+1=29" outside dimension. The math thing is really not too difficult once you get the hang of it. When you apply the concept to your plans you can build a wide or not so wide body to meet the dimensions of your own wide or not so wide body. Then you get the number that Don Pietenpol gave you with your plans and instructions and that becomes your serial number for your drawings. If you want you can get a bit more tricky and incorporate those numbers into your tail number when you reserve it. For example my plan set is 895 Reserved tail number: NX 895 BP BP: Bernard Pietenpol All part of the grand plan, as I see it. Hope to leave WV Tuesday in Felix the GN-1, Cinda will be in the chase motor home. Looking for grass runways with fuel along the way. Stewart in Waynesville OH could be the first stop. Need a stop north of Indianapolis, and somewhere around Pontiac or Peru IL. Can use pavement if I have to, but prefer grass. Skip

Skip, if you need a spot close to Brodhead for a final fuel stop, Polpar Grove, Ill. (home of Dan Helsper from this list) is a nice stop, with a nice grass runway and fuel. You willhave to taxi on a paved taxiway to get to the fuel pump, but it is a good place to stop. Mike Cuy and I stopped there in 2005 for a final fuel stop before the last hour to C37. Thanks Jack, Poplar Grove looks like a good place. Also looking at Kankakee IL, 3KK, and Westfield IN, I72. Westfield has no fuel but could meet Cinda with motor home and fuel tanks and overnight. > [Original Message] > From: <pietflyr@bellsouth.net> > To: <pietenpol-list@matronics.com> > Date: 6/28/2007 1:21:28 PM > Subject: Re: RE: Pietenpol-List: Brodhead - who's going this year? > > > Skip, if you need a spot close to Brodhead for a final fuel stop, Polpar Grove, Ill. Poplar Grove was as far as we got last year due to the engine problems. I would VERY HIGHLY recomend it as a neat place to stop for fuel. Steve Thomas is the owner and runs a very friendly buisness. If you have time I think his Wings And Wheels Museum is open, but not sure what days or times. He was kind enough to let us use his shop to dismantle the piet, and loaned us a trailer to give the piet a ride home. Just be prepared to gawk at all the neat airplanes there. There was another fellow there building a piet besides Dan Helsper and I can't remember his name, but he was looking at using a Corvair, and Dad gave him the mold for his cowling nose bowl. Just wondering how that piet was coming along. Any other recomended fuel stops? If we get the engine running our planned route from central Ohio will be from Chapman- VanWert OH- Warsaw IN- Valiparaiso IN- Joliet ILL- DeKalb ILL- Poplar Grove ILL- Brodhead Wi. Does anybody know of some better places for fuel along that route? The problem with our planed stops is they are all paved, which isn't a big deal, but it raises hell with the non steerable tailwheel. Shad --------------------------------- Looking for a deal? Skip, What day are you flying back home after you get to Brodhead? If we get there we could fly part of the way home togeather down through Indianna. I was thinking about going up to Oshkosh after Brodhead but not sure I want to spend 2 million dollars to eat, sleep and tie an airplane down. Stewart in Waynesville OH could be the first stop. Need a stop north of Indianapolis, and somewhere around Pontiac or Peru IL. Can use pavement if I have to, but prefer grass. If our test flights go good, (the test runs after retarding the timing 6 degrees went well) this weekend, and the weather holds out I think there is a good chance for us to make it there this year in the Piet. After this engine starts running good I am hanging up my wings as Chief Piet test pilot for engine tests, ha ha ha. By the way, THIS IS A TRUE " YOU AIN'T NEVER GONNA BELIEVE THIS SH#@" STORY! I knew that the corvair was a pretty powerful engine but tuesday night when I was doing full power test runs ( In the grass) with the tailwheel tied to a 1955 Allis Chalmers WD45 (5000 lb) tractor, which I forgot to put in gear, I started rolling forward slowly. At first I thought the rope was stretching, then I thouught the rope was coming untied. When I looked back I saw the tractor following me across the back yard. If my Allice ever stalls when I'm out mowing the runway I know of 1 more way to bring it back to the barn! I must have laughed for 15 min after seeing that. Subject: Brodhead - cheap accommodations & Milwaukee area sightseeing
In case anyone was looking for cheap motel accomodations near Brodhead, I found a room for $36/night in Janesville at www.motel6.com. It's only about 30-40 minutes away from B'head and it's a decent sized town so you can get food, go shopping, etc. if need be. I haven't been to this particular Motel 6 but I haven't had a problem in others I've stayed at. YMMV! I'm arriving in Milwaukee midday Thursday... anyone have recommendations for interesting things to see in that area for the rest of the day? I know they have a small aviation museum in the airport, but I'm always up for seeing intersting/historical/weird aviation sites/sights... -Mike Mike Whaley merlin@ov-10bronco.net Webmaster, OV-10 Bronco Association http://www.ov-10bronco.net/

Mike, Being a former resident of the Brodhead area, you have chosen well! I will be staying in Janesville also. There is a great steak house in Janesville where you pick out your steak and cook it yourself. Myself and a few others will be driving in from Fargo, ND. Anyone want a damn wall drug bumper sticker? tee-hee-hee Janesville is a very short drive to Brodhead and offers many amenities... Driving, on my way to Oshkosh Looking for a Pietenpol ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Church Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 11:34 AM Subject: Pietenpol-List: Brodhead - who's going this year? Was just thinking that it's just over three weeks till the big weekend, and that most who are planning to attend will likely have made plans by now. So, just out of curiosity I thought it might be interesting to hear who is planning to attend (flying or driving). I know a few new Piets are planning to be there - I am looking forward to seeing Don Emch's Air Camper "in the flesh", and hopefully Gary and Shad Bell can get their Corvair running reliably in time. Roman Bukolt has said he will be flying his Piet. Don recently said he plans to fly in with Frank Pavliga, and I imagine Bill Rewey will be there. So I'll start the thread going by saying that I will be attending, with my 16-year old son, and we will be driving (12 hrs each way). Who's next?
