What kind of material did you use for a spacer between the inner wheel bushing and the brake backing plate? I was thinking of just slipping on a 1-inch long bronze sleeve. Any problem with running bronze against bronze? Anyone else using these brakes care to comment? BUT,,, The brake back plate, with shoes, is solid mounted to the axle, then whatever spacer I needed so the drum would position correctly over the shoes was used. It was also a bronze sleeve. And with the bronze sleeves in the wheel, it was bronze to bronze. I drilled small oil holes over each bronze sleeve bearing in the wheel hubs. I oil them annually. These are one of the things that I worried about when building/designing. Would the oil get on the shoes and ruin them? Don't really know what's going on inside the brakes,,,but they don't grab to get me into the horror situations of nosing over,,,and when I mash them during run-up, they hold. And since I was taught by a geat WW11 P-51 pilot, who always said, don't count on the brakes, fly like they're not there,,,,,,I only use them to slow down for fun. A newer instructor in the 90's (who used to drop cargo into an opening in the forrest, with a DC-3, while spiriling, with the load on a long rope) taught me that,,,when braking with a taildragger, if you use one brake and the opposite rudder, you may ground loop, but you'll never nose over. I'm in the process of moving everything around in my house and I can't find what I'm looking for. Sometime back someone on this list posted a list they use when they do a conditional inspection on their Piet. It was really outstanding and I copied it to use but as I said I can't find it now. It's funny how similar our ships are! I do have basically the same wheels and brakes. In looking at his pictures I really only see one main difference. The piece of tubing that makes up my hub is longer. It comes all the way out to the edge of the brake drum. Instead of that tubing being about 6 1/2" it is about 8". So I guess while it's on the airplane you wouldn't be able to see the difference in Walt's and mine. I think a bronze bushing would be just fine to make up the difference, just keep them well greased. Eventually I want to get a hold of some 6" wheels and get some 8.50 X 6 tires and try them out. When I do I plan to just make up the difference with bronze bushings. Greasing them is very important. I made Larry Williams' hubs for his plane. When I made them he assured me over the phone that his axle was 1.500". I made them with the bushings at about 1.504". He said they were a little tight when he put them on. The axle must have been a little larger. I thought maybe we should open them up a little, but we never did. He went ahead and flew up to Brodhead and Oshkosh. The morning after the EAA guys interviewed him for the magazine article they wanted him to go up and do some air to air shots. He started down the runway on takeoff and the plane started to pull to one side. He stopped, taxied back and tried again. Same thing, and almost ground looped. This time he taxied to the repair tent. They had to beat the wheel off with a hammer. The bushings were so tight and so dry they practically welded themselves on to the axle. After filing, sanding and regreasing they were ready to go again. And the photoshoot was completed. Lesson learned: have at least a few thousandths clearance fit, and file grooves in the bushings to hold the grease. Then don't be afraid to grease them up! If it's too tight, once the axle starts to warm up it grows and of course that just makes it worse. Anyway, I really like the brakes. I really only use them for run up and for taxiing on pavement around other airplanes and fuel pumps. With the high pressure wheels on pavement it just likes to roll and roll. Just another reason to stay away from pavement! Which by the way, on our Brodhead/Barnstorming trip this year, I think we stopped at something like 16 airports and never once had to land on pavement. No radio either. Is that just great or what!!
