Yeah, Cloud Dancer is worth watching for the flying. Charlie Hillard did
all the flying for that one. Cheesy story.

No computer planes in this one!
The only place you'll find it though, is used on Ebay.

Not a bad film at all. Jean Arthur had one of the greatest voices and
deliveries of all time. Good story but I prefer "Waldo." Too much model
work. Of course a favorite is pretty personal. Since nobody has asked I will
give you a few good titles to add to your collection:

I'm flattered to have made John's top movie list and though I too view
Top Gun differently now that I'm
older I still wish I were a student of Kelly McGillis.
I'd like to watch 'Flying Leathernecks' and 'Flying Tigers' with John
Wayne but haven't gotten around to
ordering them from Amazon yet.

PS- some of the lines from 'Airplane' are unforgettable to me,

Well, following his tracks from Florida (what am I, a PI?..) via various internet
resources I could make sense of, it seems he has an address in Ohio, and I
got a phone number as well. I've left a couple of messages and waiting to get
through to this number still so I have not been able to confirm I got the right
guy yet.
I will report back if/when successful!

I am amazed by the number of people I need to see again and those I need to
meet in person for the first time and naturally those willing to drag my big
self around the pattern. I suppose I should be a bit more fastidious and make
a list of those I need to seek out.
With my luck I will make the list and forget it in my hotel room or just
plain loose it. Either way this year has been challenging and interesting in the
build and the experienced improved by friends on the list. Since this is
combined with a business trip I hope nothing happens to cancel the trip. I am
really looking forward to catching up with you all again.
As I have stated earlier I am bringing along a buddy, he was instrumental in
getting me from paper plans to gluing sticks together. I am gonna give him
the full experience, the total Piet immersion, so if anyone has a open seat
in their Piet it would be great to get him a ride.
Hey does anyone know if Doc is gonna supply name tags again? I sure hope
so, that was really nice to have.
I sure can wait to see the wide Piet logo!
Hope to see ya in a month and a few days.

As always, the info to be found on this blog is terrific! A couple items:
I recently had an article published in "Forward in Flight," ?the magazine of the
Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame. Topic: the annual Pietenpol Reunion at Brodhead,
Wisconsin. Title: "Field of Dreams." If any of you would like a copy for
your Pietenpol archives,?send me 50 cents and?your address and I'll mail you
a copy. Many thanks to Don Emch and Bill Church for a couple of the photos used
with the article!?Send your quarters to: Fred Beseler, 1619 Cass Street, La
Crosse, WI? 54601.? Or, if you can wait, I'll try to remember to bring some freebie
copies along to Brodhead.? E-mail is: TBYH@aol.com
One of my favorite movies is "633 Squadron." I recently picked up a DVD copy --
as good as I remember when I saw it as a kid. As a result the DH Mosquito has
always been my favorite airplane.By the way, the plywood for the Mosquito came
from Wisconsin! The movie stars Cliff Robertson and they used five REAL Mosquitos
to make the movie. The RAF had just recently retired the last of their Mossies
in the early 1960s when the movie was made and they scrounged up three
flyers and two taxi-able Mosquitos for the movie. They wrecked a couple of them?making
the movie -- nobody was thinking historic preservation at the time. Like
a lot of flying movies it has a corny plot but?the flying scenes are outstanding.
The attack on the hydro plant uses models...and, by the way, it is said
that?George Lucas was inspired by the 633 Squadron attack scenes when he made
the Death Star attack scenes in "Star Wars."
I've always thought that a 5/8-scale Mosquito powered by a pair of Jaguar V-12
engines would make a heck of a neat homebuilt project. Have to finish the Piet
project, first! (I understand there is a fellow in New Zealand building an entirely
new, from scratch?full-size Mosquito...that will be something to see when
finished!
The discussions about wood are very timely as my dad just passed?along the following
somewhat bawdy story! Hope nobody is offended...
?Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A small?
tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, 'Is?
that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?'
The birch says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands on the?
sapling. The birch says, 'Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell?
if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?'
The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, 'It is neither?
a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of?
ash I have ever put my pecker in.'
Went flying last night in a friend's '59 Beech Bonanza. What a fine airplane and
a fine night for flying -- just the kind of picture-perfect summer evening that
would be ideal for a Piet. If I hadn't been tired when I got home I would
have done some more work on the Piet!
More later!

That's great.. and on the subject of wood..
When Jean Chretien was Prime Minister up here, naturally there were a zillion jokes
about him, typically told with a poor attempt at a French-Canadian accent.
One relates his days as a law student, and needing work between semesters he wandered
around a few construction sites. One site had a "help wanted" sign posted,
so Chretien walked up to the foreman and said "hey, how you going? I need
work, and I am the man for you!" while proudly pointing at his chest.
The foreman thought Chretien looked like a geek who had never even seen construction
work before much less wield a shovel or a hammer. So, to get rid of him
nicely he told Mr. Chretien that a short aptitude test was required..
"Mr. Chretien, you look like a smart fellow, so can you do this for me? I want
you to take this piece of paper and pencil, and I want you to draw something to
represent the number, umm.., nine. Okay? No letters or numbers, just a picture."
"No problem! Gimme dat.." And Mr. Chretien proceeded to draw a picture of three
trees in a row.
"Okay, how do you get 9 from that?" asked the foreman, figuring he had him.
"Is easy, see? Tree an tree an tree is nine!"
"Oh brother.." moaned the foreman, realizing this might be tougher that he originally
hoped. "Okay then, I want you to use that same picture and represent the
number ninety-nine."
"Ah, hmm.. okay! Got it, gimme da paper", whereby Mr. Chretien then took the picture
and rubbed it face down on the ground.
He held it out and said "dere you go.. is ninety nine!"
A bit puzzled, the foreman asked him "So.. smart guy, how do you get ninety-nine
from that?"
"Is easy, see? Dirty tree and dirty tree and dirty tree is ninety nine."
The foreman held his hand to his forehead, sighed and shook his head.. but decided
to give it one more try to get rid of this yo-yo. So he asked "Alright then,
last problem. Now use that picture and make it represent one hundred!"
Mr. Chretien rubbed his chin for a moment, then exclaimed "Ah yes! Is easy again,
gimme dat..", and this time he drew a little dog at the edge of the picture,
and a pile of poop at the base of each tree.
The foreman knew the game was up, and wearily asked "Okay, show me how this is
one hundred.."
Mr. Chretien gave him a knowing smile and said "Is easy too! look.. dere is little
dog, and he take a poop under every tree, see? Now you got dirty tree and
a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, and dat make one hundred!"
He got the job.

FYI- It was my family's Company in Oshkosh Called "Pluswood Inc.",
which made the plywood wing skins for the Mosquito bomber. Pluswood
was a division of Lullabye Furniture Corp. in Stevens Point, which
also owned a company called Northern Hardwood Veneers, based in
Butternut, Wi. just north of Park Falls, Wi. They logged their own
wood up near Boulder Junction,Wi. and eventually on Outer Island in
the Apostle Island group outside of Bayfield, Wi. in Lake Superior.
They also manufactured propellors for those red radio controlled
target drones, which, incidentally were very difficult to shoot down,
and they made the antenna masts for the Grumman Hellcat.
Just a little history lesson.

A friend sent me this link to an article he wrote recently, honoring a mutual friend
we both flew with in OIF. If you have a minute, it's a good read.
Jack- (or anyone) if you go to Oshkosh you should look up Smokey, he's got more

Subject: | say goodbye to ELT's helping you in a crash |
Interesting reading. Hope they come if they see smoke now.
ELTs were originally intended for use on the 121.5-MHz frequency to
alert air traffic control and aircraft monitoring the frequency. In 1982
a satellite-based monitoring system was implemented (COSPAS-SARSAT) to
provide a better receiving source for these signals. As of February 1,
2009, the international COSPAS-SARSAT <http://www.cospas-sarsat.org>
satellite system will discontinue satellite-based monitoring of the
121.5/243-MHz frequencies, in part because of a high number of false
signals attributed with these frequencies. While there's no requirement
in the United States to replace the first- and second-generation
121.5-MHz ELTs, after this date, 121.5/243-MHz distress signals
transmitted from ELTs operating on the lower frequency will only be
detected by ground-based receivers such as local airport facilities and
air traffic control facilities or by overflying aircraft. It is
important to note that after 2009, existing 121.5-MHz ELTs, although
still legal from the FAA's perspective, will provide extremely limited
assistance if an aircraft crashes, especially in a remote location.

It would be good to give the rest of the story:
Full story at http://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/emerbcns.html
"Different types of ELTs are currently in use. There are approximately
170,000 of the older generation 121.5 MHz ELTs in service. Unfortunately,
these have proven to be highly ineffective. They have a 97% false alarm
rate, activate properly in only 12% of crashes, and provide no
identification data. In order to fix this problem 406 MHz ELTs were
developed to work specifically with the Cospas-Sarsat system. These ELTs
dramatically reduce the false alert impact on SAR resources, have a higher
accident survivability success rate, and decrease the time required to reach
accident victims by an average of 6 hours. "
And the real rest of the story is that the 406 Mhz models cost 3 times as
much as the old ones. If you want ELT coverage, you want the 406 but you'll
have to pay.

Hi all,,
My question is whether anybody is actually going to be listening when my 406
ELT ($$$$)goes off, and for that matter are "they" going to dispatch
emergency rescuers to my crash scene, without somebody actually declaring that
I am

So does the 406 price eventually drop to a more unreasonable amount?
That is my $64 question!

The 406 ELTs are received by satellite and there certainly people listening
all the time that will start the search/rescue process.
I have done ship electronics for a long time and I sold many hundreds or
thousands of 406 ELTs (called EPIRB in marine version) when the requirements
to carry them instead of the 121.5 units came out about 12 years ago. We
first started selling them at about $1,200 and the price steadily declined
over the years. I think they are about $600 now. The ship ones are much
bigger, designed to float, and have a hydrostatic release that releases them
from the mount at a certain water depth so they float to the surface.
I did talk to one of the manufacturers at Sun N Fun and asked if they
thought the price would come down on the aviation units like they did on the
marine ones. He said no, but that is the same story we got when the marine
ones were first being sold.

Hi all,,
My question is whether anybody is actually going to be listening when my
406 ELT ($$$$)goes off, and for that matter are "they" going to dispatch
emergency rescuers to my crash scene, without somebody actually declaring
that I am missing? Somehow I don't put a lot of faith in "them".

I was working with EMS in Ottawa to certify a 406 ELT. The project was
shelved. But at the time they were targeting $800. I hear rumours in the
avionics underground that someone else will be introducing a 406 in that
price range soon. Wait and see.

I read that 25% of ELT's go off in an accident but I believe it must be
jarred beyond a certain g-loading so if you have
a gentle (less violent ?) accident it won't go off.
Years back a line guy friend was out in a 150 and set the ELT off on a
hard landing. He didn't' realize it until his boss
wanted to know "who was the last one who flew 1234 Tango last night
?????" the next day.

"They" are the same people who were wondering why all that beeping was going
off on 121.5 so the answer is that the response really couldn't get any
worse by moving to a more reliable system.

Aircraft Spruce has them at just under $1k at the moment. Will be good to
have a little more price competition there.

then fire up your browser and see if you can see it on the matronics web site

At Sun n Fun a few years back, I was wondering the flight line in the evening.
At that time of day, there's very little pedestrian traffic, so when I saw a small
crowd, I wandered over to see what was so interesting. It turned out to be
a squad of the local CAP kids responding to an ELT signal. The plane was locked
and nobody was to be found, so they were wrapping the tailcone of the plane
with foil to cage in the radio signal.
On talking with them, the satellite was what picked it up, not the local receivers.
Apparently they typically got a few of these cases during SNF every year.
Don't forget to turn your ELT off when you leave your plane.

Where are you finding these cheap copies? On Amazon, the prices I see range
from about $55 to $150! I know all pilots are supposed to be rich, but that
is a little steep for me, almost a couple of hours of Piet fuel.
