I suppose I was rather fortunate I got mine for a ten spot in the bulk DVD
rack at Walmart.

Where are you finding these cheap copies? On Amazon, the prices I see range
from about $55 to $150! I know all pilots are supposed to be rich, but that
is a little steep for me, almost a couple of hours of Piet fuel.

Subject: | tail brace wires |
The tail brace wires on 41CC are 1/16". When I got the airplane from Corky, they
were done in galvanized cable. One of the wires broke sometime during a flight
(Charlie at the stick) and since they were already showing some weathering
I decided to replace them all with stainless cable since they hang out in the
breeze all of their lives. I have on occasion taken a look back there in flight
when I've gone through some turbulence because those little cables look mighty
thin at such times, but the catalogued numbers for tensile strength indicate
that the wood or fastener would fail long before the cable might.
The control cables to the rudder and elevators on 41CC are 3/32". The wing strut
and cabane strut X-brace wires are 1/8". All galvanized.

Subject: | off topic- air movies-- "A Piece of Cake" |
I very much enjoyed the BBC made-for-TV series, "A Piece of Cake," about an RAF
fighter squadron. It has a good story, good acting, good flying sequences, etc.
The aircraft featured are mostly Hurricanes, rather than Spitfires, as I
recall, vs. Me bf109s, Me 110s, Stukas, and various German bombers.
It is available for rental on Blockbuster on line, or whatever it is called-- Blockbusters'
monthly subscription for home delivery of DVDs. I think it is a
3-DVD set.
The book by the same name was excellent, too. And so was "Goshawk Squadron" by
the same author, about the same squadron. I think this book may have been set
a bit earlier, in the air battle over France in 1940, perhaps ending with air
cover over Dunkirk. I think Derek Robinson is the author.
The BBC film series may have combined story elements and timeframes from both books.

heck out http://gallery.mac.com/
craiglawler#100057&view=grid&bgcolor=black&sel=3. The lady pilot
didn't talk to me until I was turned away heading home or I would
have gotten a little closer. I fly with some paraplane guys and I
think she might have been going just a little slower than they do
maybe 30 knots or so. I could just about stay with her. Nice evening
flight in central Pa.

A buddy of mine has his ELT go off last week because his engine broke a connecting
rod and tore itself apart. The vibration set off the ELT.
(which he turned off immediately) And was able to make a dead stick landing at
Whitman airport.... They were saying it takes approx a 3g shock to set off the
ELT.

At Sun n Fun a few years back, I was wondering the flight line in the evening.
At that time of day, there's very little pedestrian traffic, so when I saw a small
crowd, I wandered over to see what was so interesting. It turned out to be
a squad of the local CAP kids responding to an ELT signal. The plane was locked
and nobody was to be found, so they were wrapping the tailcone of the plane
with foil to cage in the radio signal.
On talking with them, the satellite was what picked it up, not the local receivers.
Apparently they typically got a few of these cases during SNF every year.
Don't forget to turn your ELT off when you leave your plane.

Good photos Craig and good to see you surface on the list. One year
near Akron my passenger and I passed up
the Spirit of Goodyear and waggled our wings. It is about the only
thing I've ever passed in a Pietenpol besides a
parasailer.

Tim,
I very much agree about "Piece of Cake". A fantastic series with great
flying sequences. I remember watching that with my Dad on Channel 11
(Chicago PBS) growing up. I'm sure our Spitfire or Hurricane plastic model
build was happening during or shortly thereafter. Great show....
