I just finished my cowling. For around the engine (model A) I used .032 3003
aluminum because I wanted to put some louvers in it and 2024 is too hard
(cracks when you try to form the louvers). Then behind that I used .025 2024
aluminum. Seems thin but works just fine because the gentle bend around the
instrument panel really stiffens it up.

but thought I would ask is anyone had any idea or suggestions
Just in case someone has a jig or design or drawing to loan its a Lycoming

Any assistance, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: | Oven Baked Paint |
Jack,
There is an option that I recently read about, regarding baking some parts
for a Corvair rebuild.
The technique involves taking advantage of a day or so when one's wife is
away for the day.
Basically, you use the oven for your "non-food" items, and when you are
finished, you run the oven through a self-clean cycle. Whatever fumes there
might have been get burned off (or at least masked by that oven cleaning
smell), but the oven is clean, which might win you some brownie points
(depending on how out of character your actions would be). I don't think
there could possibly be any residual smell from the paint.
On the other hand, are you talking about the spray cans of appliance
touch-up paint? I think that stuff is usually air-dry, and I'm not sure that
baking it will give any benefit. Generally speaking, air-dry paints are
supposed to be dried at normal room temperature (roughly), and baking
enamels (which are more durable) must be baked to cure properly. Then there
is powdercoating, which is a tough finish that can only cure by baking
(basically the heat melts the powder onto the metal, forming a mechanical
bond rather than the chemical bond with most paints). One other option for a
tough paint finish is epoxy, which does not need to be baked.
Here's a link to the website, by a former Piet lister, Robert Haines:

One quick thing about chemicals and the oven (besides the obvious).
If you have a pet bird, don't do this. Birds are light, in order to be light
they have very little body fluids.. very little blood, small efficient
organs. They used them in mines because they succumb very quickly to toxins.
Most bird owners do not cook with teflon because of this.
No telling what is going to outgas from the paint even at 250 degF. We have
to take "Kitty" out of the house for the day when we run the self-cleaning
cycle on the oven because of the oven's non-stick coating and +500degF temps
during this cycle.

Awaiting several thousand dollars worth of long lead-time engine parts. No idea

The subdivision where I live has a lot of similarly named streets. "Blackhawk

Came home one time and somebodies dog was tied up in my yard. The address on it's

If you try this individual, -Greg Klemp--Tel: 920.293.8089---at
Specialty Welding (you can do an Internet search and should find his web s

kit plane manufacturers. Excellent workmanship, very price conscious, and
a pilot understanding the needs of builder.
-
He welds aluminum, magnesium, mild and cast, Heliarc, wire feed, stick, and
gas.
Other services include: Building engine mounts from prints, custom building
exhaust to specifications, and building fuel tanks. I have utilized his se

Heck, if you mention my name you could either get a higher price or maybe a
lower price.....either way you will get it right and a very professional r

Subject: | 1.7 oz. fabric (was Poly Fiber) |
I asked my friend Jeff Scott (A&P, builder/pilot of several homebuilts including
fabric, EAA Tech Counselor) about the use of 1.7 oz. fabric. Indeed, Ceconite
had (or has) a product that they call "Ceconite Light", which they say is "a
1.7 oz. fabric designed for ultralights, gliders, and certified light aircraft
with a wing loading of less than 9 pounds per square foot. It can usually
be used on light planes with engines less than 85 HP. Do not use on aircraft
with high wing loadings or big engines. Meets TSO C-14b" (from the Ceconite manual;
I've sent Matt the .pdf scan of this page from the Ceconite manual for
uploading to the Piet list file share).
I assume that the PolyFiber (Stits) 1.7 oz. fabric is similar to, if not identical
to, the Ceconite material.
The specs for the Pietenpol Air Camper are for a gross weight of 1,081 lbs., wing
area of 140 s.f., and of course most are powered with 85 HP or smaller engines.
The specified wing loading works out to less than 8 lbs./s.f. The wing
loading has to do with how stressed the fabric covering on the wings will be,
and I assume that the recommended max horsepower has to do with how much torsional
strength the fuselage needs to have as well as how much it will see in the
way of slipstream and prop wash buffeting, but that's just a guess.
You can use heavier fabric but I don't believe it's necessary.

Subject: | Mr. Santiago Morete |
Hi everyone,
I am honored to announce, that after many months of jumping through hoops
for the American Embassy, in order to get a visa to enter the U.S., Mr.
Santiago Morete from Santa Rosa, Argentina, will be accompanying me to this year's
Brodhead Pietenpol Gathering. It is a dream come true for him and will be his
first visit to the U.S. We will be arriving on Friday morning via my
Aeronca Sedan (weather permitting). As many of you know, he and his older brother
have been working on their Piet for some time. If you go to Chris Tracy's site
(westcoastpiet.com) you can see the quality work they are doing. If you get
a chance please try to give him a warm American welcome to the U.S., and
introduce yourself. I am sure he will really appreciate it! See you there!!
