Congratulations, Gardiner. For the first time in weeks I can actually
read one of your posts to the list. Did you do anything different, or
did Matte change something on the listserver?

I look forward to seeing you at Brodhead.

Oscar, I'm ashamed of you. You are going to let something as trivial as
"work" interfere with something spiritual like Brodhead? You can work
      anytime.

The local airspace has been invaded by so many "bogies" lately that 41CC
and I decided to stay in the area and protect the citizens against
terrorism ;o) Seriously, I am busy up to my ears at work right now and
can't take the time off to fly up this year, despite my best efforts to
block time out to go. The airplane is ready and willing, my -er- "seat
cushion" is at least up to the flight as long as I promise to stop every
2 hours or so, but I simply can't take the time off right now. I hope
the TACOs and honorary members are represented around the table when
pint glasses are hoisted (or whatever they drink in Brodhead to clear
the dust from their throats). Maybe next year.

I think I need to retire so I can have time to do fun stuff ;o) I spoke
with Doc Mosher on the phone last night and he described the project he
has for sale. Sounds like a really nice, complete, clean project just
waiting for an engine to finish it up, and me with a 0 SMOH A75 sitting
in my hangar in the crate! I keep trying to talk myself into it. Only
a couple of thousand miles to drive up to Neenah with a trailer. Heck,
Corky did it; why can't I???

Glad to hear you and your bird will be there Greg. Sounds like there
might not be too many Pietenpols there this year. So far, just you and
Dick Navratil and I have said we're bringing our Piets. Of course there
are several that always show, like Bill Rewey and Lowell Frank. We have
yet to hear from Don Emch, Shad Bell and Roman Bukolt as to whether or
not they are coming. I think Mike Cuy will be there, but probably not
      with his Pietenpol.

      Pat,

No, there isn't a specific website dedicated to the Piet gathering. But
there are these two sites that should help:

This is the local EAA chapter website:
      http://www.eaa431.org/

And this is the Brodhead Pietenpol Association website:
      http://pietenpols.org/

Aside from that, here's the basics. The very informal "gathering" takes
place at the Brodhead airport from Friday thru Sunday. Friday is usually
actually a busy day, with arrivals by air and road. Saturday is the busiest
day, with forums being held for about six hours of the day. Sunday is
usually pretty low-key, with most attendees leaving by about noon (either
off to Oshkosh or back on the road back home). Camping is permitted at the
airport (usually $10 for the weekend). There is one shower. Meals are served
at the airport (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Brodhead is a small town, with
only one hotel and a B&B (I think). Nearby Monroe has a few motels. But,
since everything is right there at the airport (including all the
Pietenpols) why would you want to sleep in a real bed? Brodhead airport
houses a fantastic collection of rare and antique aircraft, and the owners
usually open their hangars and let the public wander around. It's quite
unique. The atmosphere for the gathering is friendly, relaxed and welcoming.
      You just gotta go!

      Bill C.

Its amusing to hear this from the other side of the coin; over on the Canar
      d
lists they are discussing how not to fall out of the sky when they get
backed up behind the planes that have a VNE 20 kts above the canards minimum
      .
We are really looking forward to our seventh Oshkosh & our first Brodhead.

We will be in the second wave from Georgia. 4 of the 6 Big Piet Builders (
Frank, Harold, Mike and myself) are flying up in 2 Cessna 172's. Coming up
on Friday and departing Sunday. No Oshkosh this year, we are spending the

      Hello Good People,

I just had a thought, not a great one, but a thought nonetheless! As I said
earlier, we are planning dinner in Rockford and I got reservations for Friday

evening 7/25 in the absolute best restaurant in Rockford Ill table for 4 at
the moment. I am planning on just my buddy and I so far but would certainly
welcome the company of others that may be interested in a killer kick ass
dinner in the best restaurant in Rockford.

Naturally anyone interested in joining us for dinner are certainly welcome
however they will have to arrange for transportation to Rockford and will have

to pay for their own meal and adult beverages. Knowing how you guys think I
thought I should clarify that piece of information.

Anyone interested should contact me off line for details

      John

So what is the absolute worst part of the movie. (Hint - it's a flying
scene and it comes in the first part of the film)

Are you talking about the scene where Axel makes an amazing
transformation - he approaches the pond in a Standard and manages to
crash a Tiger Moth into it?

Please understand I am not questioning your engineering, I was just
curious if the stock lengths (just moved outside the fuselage) did not
work for some reason? Or would it work fine, but the goal was to
      eliminate the rubbing?

              Scott,

The inside control horn is the correct length. The outside
control horns are a bit longer as will the control arms on the elevator
be matched to the same length. This way it will not effect the throw of
the elevator. as long as everything is kept in the same geometry, it
      should work out just fine.

Are your elevator control horns the stock length? What length
are your control horns at the externals? Are the throws stock?

                        Fellow Pieter's

Here are a few of photos of my bell crank set-up. I
like the looks of Dick Navratil outside linkage set-up for the elevator
so much that I stole his idea!! Enjoy the photos and any constructive
criticisms are welcomed! Note* I did clear the front edge of the
stabilizer using Dick's design. Hence the several mock-ups and
measure/re-measure before install points found. I have about 3/4" of an
inch from the top of my tail cross brace to the top of the bell
      crank.....

The question I do have is..... what type of connection
(photos) have most of you been using for the bell crank to cable
hook-up? I understand the plans making mention of a clevis pin and hook
connection....but what have others used in this application? Seems to
me an adjustable fork or other similar connection would be much more
      desirable for adjustment. Photos welcome.

I appreciate the offer, but it will probably be around 2:00 PM by the
time I get to Rome and I'll be only a little over halfway to my first
      day's destination.

If you want lunch or something on Wed. we are in Carrollton about 40
mi south of Rome. We could meet you at the airport. (We are always
looking for any excuse to go to the airport)

      Hey Scott.....
      -
I truly liked the looks of this set-up when I viewed Dick's Pietenpol at Br
odhead, WI-last year. And since the issue came up about avoiding-"cable
rub," this design system allows for more upward movability of the control
horn to avoid such issues. I don't think the added drag with the horns outs
ide are going to be that much of a factor....

Please understand I am not questioning your engineering, I was just curious
if the stock lengths (just moved outside the fuselage) did not work for so
me reason? Or would it work fine, but the goal was to eliminate the rubbing
      ?

The inside control horn is the correct length. The outside control horns ar
e a bit longer as will the control arms on the elevator be matched to the s
ame length. This way it will not effect the throw of the elevator. as long
as everything is kept in the same geometry, it should work out just fine.

Are your elevator control horns the stock length? What length are your cont

      Fellow Pieter's
      -
Here are a few of photos of my bell crank set-up. I like the looks-of Dic
k Navratil outside linkage set-up for the elevator so much that I stole his
idea!! Enjoy the photos and any constructive criticisms-are welcomed!-
Note* -I did clear the front edge of the stabilizer using Dick's design.
Hence the several mock-ups and measure/re-measure before install points fou
nd. I have about 3/4" of an inch from the top of my tail cross brace to the
       top of the bell crank.....
      -
The question I do have is..... what type of connection (photos) have most o
f you been using for the bell crank to cable hook-up? I understand the plan
s making mention of-a clevis pin and hook connection....but what have oth
ers used-in this application?- Seems to me an adjustable fork or other
similar connection would be much more desirable for adjustment. Photos welc
      ome.-

Is he possibly a Lime Rock Vintage car guy??? I've been able to make it to

As far as Brodhead roll-call goes, I will be arriving on Thursday.

Drove out the last 2 years from CT. (It's kind of a hike, ..about 18/19
hours worth) Flying commercial this year. Might try it again next year though.

Is he possibly a Lime Rock Vintage car guy??? I've been able to make it to
the Vintage weekends there a few times. The vintage car group has a lot in
common with the vintage plane group.

As far as Brodhead roll-call goes, I will be arriving on Thursday.

Anyone from the New England need a rider to share fuel expenses to Brodhead
and Osh, let me know. I have an old friend who has never been and wants to
kick some tires, he is thinking about switching from driving race cars to
      flying.
      Please contact me for information.
      Thanks, Chrissi
