Chrissi,
Are y'all flying a Cozy into Brodhead? If so, be aware that the longest
runway at C37 is only a little over 2400 feet long (good approaches,
though) and all runways are turf.
I look forward to meeting you and Randi and helping to introduce you to
the way homebuilding airplanes used to be.

Anyone from the New England need a rider to share fuel expenses to
Brodhead and Osh, let me know. I have an old friend who has never been
and wants to kick some tires, he is thinking about switching from
driving race cars to flying.
Please contact me for information.
Thanks, Chrissi

Barry,
>From memory, I believe there usually is a breakfast of sorts each day
(Sunday might be a bit simpler), and lunch as well (chili dogs or something
like that) and there is a dinner on Friday (Brats?).
So it is possible to not need to leave the airport. I'd be glad to give any
of you guys a ride into town if you need (or want), as I will be driving.

I know that there is a breakfast on Saturday am and the pork chop dinner
that night. Are any other meals available for us flying in a light as
possible? What about Friday night or Sunday am?

The best part is when the controller at Fisk tells you "blue and white
high wing, keep your speed up" when you are at
full power and indicating 90 mph. Bite me.
If they land you on the N-S runways Shad beware of wake turbulence from
the parallel runway drifting over to your
side. Be ready for it in case it wants to twist you. I've never had
that happen but we had one of our guys in his
Piet wreck his plane when the propwash and wake of a departing DC-3 from
the adjacent runway drifted over to
him just when he was in the flare for landing. Ouch.

So...Does anyone know of plans to show Waldo Pepper at Brodhead? If so,
please let me know 'cause we'd love to be there!!
Douwe and Marci, arriving by car (hopefully flying next year!!) Thursday
late afternoon/early evening. We always camp out across the closed runway
under the trees. Green Xterra and tent, come over the say hi.
On another note. I'm an artist and I'm trying to finish up a really nice
pen and ink of a Piet. I'm going to get them printed on some good paper and
bring them to Brodhead to sell, all the proceeds going to BPA. Doc said
he'll put them out somewhere along with a framed example, which will be a
raffle prize.

Sorry to hear that Mike, we were counting on your buying us dinner!
I may be able to haul you to Mickey D's on Saturday if you pay for gas and
meals. If that works for ya. I would certainly pay for pizza and beer for ya
after you land in Lancaster PA, LNS, all you need to do is tell me when you
plan to arrive, its my standing offer to Piet builders and drivers visiting my
area of the world. I have made exception for an RV builder and a F16 driver
but mostly Piet folks.
Best I can do Mike.
I can volunteer to carry your gas can every time you need it, for a free
lesson at the end of the day!

needs about 3000 ft of it.
We'll be driving the maroon Dodge Minivan... fondly dubbed "The Motorhome"

Douwe,
Last year they projected Waldo Pepper on a hangar door Friday or Saturday
evening. There was a popcorn machine and everything, with the audience
sitting on the grass out front. As far as I know there wasn't an
announcement about it (or maybe there was, and I was busy doing something at
the time). I have no idea if there are plans to repeat the performance. For
sure, it would be weather-dependant. Last year was a beautiful summer
evening - perfect.
If they do show it again, and there's a line that you can't hear you could
always ask certain members (without mentioning names) of this list that seem
to have the entire script memorized. I'm sure they could help you out there.

And I'll be looking for your Piet prints. You realize that since you
mentioned it here on the list that you now HAVE TO finish it and get the
prints made and bring them with you.

I remember that crunch well. I was landing the plane ahead of the accident
piet. I remember feeling the thump as I flared when the wake got me in th
e last second of flight, seeing the DC-3 pass. About 2 seconds earlier I
heard a plane behind me go to full throttle and then a whump and crunch sou
nd. I turned in my seat to see the piet in its final twisting motion and a
cloud of dust, a main wheel springing from the confusion and bounding towa
rd the main runway in an awkward track. It was a sick feeling, but the pi
lot was ok. He told me that at about 10' he lost glide path and roll at th
e same time and tried to go around. The wind was 90 degrees cross and abou
t 10 knots or so. The landing DC-3's wake got him and nearly me. It was a
bad end to a mass formation arrival from Hartford in 1999. Glad there wa
s no injury!
You all have fun at Brodhead. I made it there 'by surprise' last year in m
y Yellow Stinson. I'm not going to mislead you this year and say I won't m
ake it, since we will be driving through the area on family vacation this y
ear.... I can say I won't be flying, but if you see a white Suburban with
a block letter "E" pasted to the rear, we succeeded in adding Brodhead to o
ur itinerary!

If they land you on the N-S runways Shad beware of wake turbulence from the
parallel runway drifting over to your
side. Be ready for it in case it wants to twist you. I've never had th
at happen but we had one of our guys in his
Piet wreck his plane when the propwash and wake of a departing DC-3 from th

him just when he was in the flare for landing. Ouch.

Funny when the controllers tell you to hit one of the big colored dots
on the runways. My last landing up there they
told me to land on the furthest dot down the runway and to keep my speed
up as long as possible. Was odd flying
over the runway at 80 feet at full power until the last 1/4 of it but
true to form, the Pietenpol does what it does best
in that configuration---demonstrates it's great ability to produce drag.
One time past Ripon the controller asked me to 'sidestep' to my left to
allow a wallowing Aerostar twin engine pass
me up. That poor guy had flaps and gear out and was nose high when he
went past me just off my right wing.
I could almost see his middle finger giving me some kind of aerial
gesture that wasn't very kind:))

Maybe we should all get deck chairs and scoring cards like in the Olympics,
park ourselves next to a big colored dot and score landings?
Add some rings for a spot landing competition?
I had a boyfriend in the 70's that would fly this 16 ft R/c glider, he maxed
the spot landing competition. I had the stopwatch and would count down the
time, he is downwind in terminal velocity dive
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5... he pulls out of the dive and is now heading for the
spot going a bazillion mph 2 ft off the grass, the crowd thinks he is insane....
3, 2, 1..WHAM ! he dips the nose on the paper plate precisely at ZERO, pulls
up into a half loop and gently circles around, speed brakes deploy and he
takes his time line up and landing -on- the plate. The crowd goes wild.
The rules said first that how many seconds from the clock +/- you touched
the ground was the first half of your score and then how close you came to a
stop at the paper plate in inches was the rest of the score. Lowest score wins.
Thinking outside the box he treated them as two separate events for a 0/0
score.
We'll have none of that on the colored spots please =)

One of the fun (or not) things about landing at OSH - particularly on
the Sunday before the show opens, is the line of spectators watching and
"grading" the landings. Last year when I flew my RV-4 from Brodhead to
OSH, I landed on runway 27. The tower told me to land on the Orange dot
and by sheer luck for once I made an absolutely perfect landing right in
the center of the orange dot. The only way I could tell that I was down
was I could hear the wheels rolling (that doesn't happen very often with
me). Just then I noticed the line of lawn chairs alonside the runway
with guys holding up cards with numbers on them. For that landing I got
a solid string of 9's and the guy on the end of the line actually stood
up and saluted! I'll remember that one for a long time. Quite a
contrast from when I flew the Pietenpol in 2005 and landed in a 20 knot
90 degree crosswind on 18R. Nobody applauded that landing - I was just
glad to get it on the ground.

Peter,
Nice video! I can see that your chase plane had trouble keeping up in the
obligatory turn & bank away from the camera.must have been one of those low

Subject: | Re: Meals at Brodhead |
I'm renting a Mazda 6, and I'll be by myself, so I can run people back
and forth to town, make fuel runs, etc. I'm spending the night in
Monroe, so if anybody flying in needs a ride in that direction I can
help with that too.
