For you guys with batteries in your Piets which one are you using and
what does it weigh? William Wynne recommends the Odyssey PC680 which
weights 15 lbs for Corvairs. I was looking at some Miata racing stuff
and came across this Braille racing battery with similiar output and
cost which only weights 6 lbs. If it will start a 10 to 1 compression
ratio Miata engine it should turn over a Corvair or O-200.

Mark Langford has hundreds of hours on his Corvair-powered KR with both the 2700
and the 3100 "Big Boy" engines. He runs a Panasonic 18 amp-hour UPS battery
that weighs, if I remember correctly, less than 6 lbs. He recently swapped it
out for a 20 Ah battery that has the same form factor. It's just a sealed lead
acid UPS battery, and I think it cost $24 or so from somewhere online.
Mark's airplane has relatively full electrics, radio, EFIS, and of course starter
and that little battery starts it just fine.

Yesterday's obituaries listed Wallace B. "Wally" Carson as having died a few days
ago. Wally gave me my first airplane ride, in his Luscombe, some 48 years
ago. When I was growing up he was the GMAC finance manager at my grandfather's
auto dealership, Gateway Chevrolet in Laredo, Texas.
I remember that flight quite well. The ground melted away under the tires of the
Luscombe and the next thing I knew I was looking at the Rio Grande river snaking
around to encircle my home town, the hospital, the water tower... and here
I am a half-century later, still marveling at the same sights.
Funny thing is, I've never -not once since I've owned 41CC- had any kid ask me
for a ride, or even seen kids hanging around the airport.

Oscar, I'd like to think that's because kids are looking higher; to space,
but unfortunately I feel its because they get all the stimulation they want
(need?) from a video screen. Why hang around an airport and beg for a ride when
they can fly the plane any way they want at home on a computer?
I actually had someone in their twenties tell me they knew how to fly. When
I asked them what they had flown and how many hours, between the inventory and
the hours something did not add up. When I pushed further they finally
admitted it was all flight simm time. They had never actually sat in a pilots
seat.
They were quite indignant when I laughed and discounted all of it.
They said it was easy and they could probably fly anything once thy knew
where all the controls were. They were serious!
Yah, for an open cockpit I guess an electric fan would make it a totally
real experience? Fur sure.
We are sorry about the passing of your friend Wally but he will live on as
long as you connect him with the gift he gave you of your first flight. I
remember mine in an Ercoupe when I was 16.

Hello good people!!
My first airplane flight was given to me by a Civil Air Patrol volunteer in
an Aeronca Champ circa 1967 at Schaumburg (IL) Airport. His name was Rudy
Gasperich. He was a tireless worker and was the fixture tow pilot for our CAP
glider operation in a farmers field in Algonquin IL. back in those days. I can
remember that he would sit in that towplane (PA-12) for about 4 hours at a
time, never getting out of the seat. When he was running low on fuel he would
fly over to Crystal Lake (now Lake-in-the-hills). ...........I guess that is
why I am partial to Aeroncas.
Anyway I met up with him many years later over at Poplar Grove, and told him
how much I appreciated him for doing all that.
Dan Helsper
Poplar Grove, IL.

Was just thinking about overall weight, but you are correct, forward CG is
almost a good problem to have with a Piet. Did you mount your battery on the
firewall?

Boy! You must take having a "Sterile" cockpit when landing, pretty
seriously.
I hate it when they scream and holler when I'm trying to concentrate
on Final.

Agreed, I was going to say the same thing, most kids get their thrills with
video games. And they don't have to learn FARs, take written and flight
tests, etc.

Maybe someone should lobby the video game companies to put Cessna Flight
Centers first flight coupons in with video games, some on screen blurbs about
Young Eagles?
Sounds like a mission for Osh?
If everybody talked to their EAA chapter officers and then when you go by
Microsoft and the other flight simm booths you can mention how they should
mention real flight opportunities in the opening credits?

Subject: | Re: Wally Carson (1924-2008) |
There is a lot to compete for leisure time that we did not have as
kids; all of it in the comfort of our own homes. We used to play
pickup baseball and now it is soccer tournaments, all organized by
parents. My guess is there are a lot of parents that would not only
NOT encourage a bike trip to the airport but would not allow them to
ride their bike there in the first place.
I don't think I am old at 44, but I do remember when a friend of ours
who was a feed salesman gave us a four function calculator he had as a
promotional item. That was pretty cool to push those buttons and see
those LEDs light up. My first ride was with a traffic reporter in
Sacrament, CA (Bill Black). My dad new him from Lions Club and he
invited us up for a morning. That ride has stuck with me and fueled a
passion that has lasted for 39 years.
But, on the positive side, I have a 13 year old daughter that loves to
fly and hang out at the airport. The airport bums love having her
around and she is always ready to jump in the Cub. I always let her
run around the airport and explore. She was timid to do that at first,
but now takes it as routine. I often find her in one of the chairs in
Steve Krog's hangar just reading a book and and being where the action
is. HXF is a different kind of airport I guess, no fence and lots of
neat airplanes. Last Saturday when I was at the gas pump, I spied
three Cubs, two champs, two PA-12s and a Travel Air. Not too bad for
9:00 A.M. on a Saturday.

We have to go get them.
Best movies ever was a recent topic. One I didn't see mentioned is a new
movie called One Six Right
http://www.terwilligerproductions.com/onesixright/
It addresses the issue in a very moving documentary with the most beautiful
cinematography you'll ever see. Watch it on your computer or on a high-def
TV and you'll be brought to tears.

LOL, no, engineering geekette that worked close to marketing =)
I have no idea why Cessna and Sporties does not go for it, Sporties should
put their free sample lesson DVD in with each game DVD and get more bang for
their buck.
MS Flight Simm had Rod Machado do the tutorials for Flight Simm, it sort of
works, often malfunctioned and not let you continue to the next level of
tutorial, you lose the continuity, honest I did not fail a lesson! =)
But the tutorial in conjunction with the very clearly done 3D lessons from
Sporty's and some incentive coupons from Cessna, contact information from EAA
Young Eagles...is there room in a DVD case for the cattle prod to get their
butts off the sofa?
This is like me trying to get an old boyfriend to come to Osh the first
time, I desperately want him to come and experience it but truthfully you can't
want it for them more than they do for themselves. Either they find the self
motivation at some point or they are just not interested enough to carry
through.
I remember in the 70's a friend of mine (business partner) was a Marine
Reserve UH-1B Huey pilot, he would do these hops during the week where he'd
arrange with a high school to land on their sports field and then let the kids
come out and check out the Huey. I loved to drive over and watch the kids geek
out on the helicopter.

Probably yes to both but do yourself a favor and buy the DVD.
It's totally worth owning.

Oscar, the kid ,14 years old and taller than me, with me the other day won't ask
for a ride. He is just that quiet. but he loves flying. Part of it may be that
they don't think that they will get a ride. Also their parents don't want them
to "beg" or bother people. A pilot invited him to ride in his Pelecan LSA.
He really enjoyed it. Several months ago I flew him in my Vtail.
My boys are split. One is wary of flying (he gets motion sick) and the other argues
that he loves planes more than I do.
Just remember, I am almost always willing to go up.

Oscar,
Maybe kids look at Piets and wonder if they can really fly, like me boarding a
C-119 many years ago, or anyone watching a bumblebee. Little do they know that
you can cuise at Mach .1
How about a ride for this big fat old kid next Saturday?

Nathan and Corky,
You are right about that. I'd never get in.
Oscar offered me a ride-- even with me in the back seat and him in the front--
but I have material "fit and finish" issues, as you know. I am too tall, too
wide, and I don't bend. My knees still hit the now-truncated instrument panel
bottom in the back pit of your long fuze 31CC. Where is Chuck Gantzer and his
baby oil, when you need him?
And of course, with me in the back, there would be CG issues, too.
However, I'll be content to prop Oscar and smell the slipstream as he rolls 41CC
away, and see him make some low passes down the grass strip.
Re 31CC, I am still looking for the best place for steps (1,2,3? haha) for me--
fuhgetaboutit-- no step for the passenger. Can you say "Ladder"?

Oscar,
I'm not a big ride giver, But I've given my share.
I think we see the ride giving in a different perspective. We forget how
little the riders know about flying. Which is good thing. Because we don't
realize what impact we have on these people.
Just last night, my freind Don called (he was on the youtube video with me)
He's a retired IRS agent,,, He realized life was too short, and after flying
with me , he started glider lessons.
He's got about 20 hours and wants to fly with me again soon.
Another success story.
I guess we do make a difference.

Chrissi and Randi, if you are going to be at Brodhead, Talk to Bill
Rewey. He'll take you up (one at a time, of course).
He has a widely known reputation for flying women, mostly wives of
Piet builders. Very typically upon landing, their first comment is to
their spouses. "How soon will you finish yours?"

Subject: | Wally Carson (1924-2008) |
I try to keep first rides to aobut 20 minutes. I try to do them in the
AM when it is smother and I don't do any radical maneuvers. I want the
first time flyer to really enjoy the experience and come back for more.
Perhaps learning to fly.
We have to grow our own to keep aviation healthy.

Oscar,
I'm not a big ride giver, But I've given my share.
I think we see the ride giving in a different perspective. We forget
how little the riders know about flying. Which is good thing. Because
we don't realize what impact we have on these people.
Just last night, my freind Don called (he was on the youtube video with
me) He's a retired IRS agent,,, He realized life was too short, and
after flying with me , he started glider lessons.
He's got about 20 hours and wants to fly with me again soon.
Another success story.
I guess we do make a difference.

He really enjoyed it. Several months ago I flew him in my Vtail.

Steve, you mean you don't do gentle S turns by banking 90 degrees and pull
full up elevator?

Oh gee, lets see if we can make the chic scream.
I guess there is an advantage to being a passenger in an open cockpit plane
'cause when you hurl the pilot gets a second breakfast =)

front of the passanger.

Was just thinking about overall weight, but you are correct, forward
CG is almost a good problem to have with a Piet. Did you mount your
battery on the firewall?

I use the Odessy 680 with my Rotec. It turns over fine and can be
mounted in any position. Do you really care about weight that much when
it forward of CG? 4 lb of weight roughly at the firewall equalls 1 lb
at the tailwheel. Abit of weight at the FW can keep from having to move
the wing back excessively.

For you guys with batteries in your Piets which one are you using
and what does it weigh? William Wynne recommends the Odyssey PC680 which
weights 15 lbs for Corvairs. I was looking at some Miata racing stuff
and came across this Braille racing battery with similiar output and
cost which only weights 6 lbs. If it will start a 10 to 1 compression
ratio Miata engine it should turn over a Corvair or O-200.

I have been working on flying off the hours getting the Rotec Piet ready
to go to Brodhead. I have been having some problems with my prop, it
wasn't carved or balanced right from the start. I re carved and
balanced it. Today with 38.3 hours, I found a crack in the prop at the
hub and going out thru one of the bolt holes. There isnt enough time to
get a new one at this point, so I will have to fly the A-65 Piet
instead. I cant just trade props because the hub pattern is different.

Oh! You don't have to be a man to build a Piet. I'll bet you know
how to use a hack saw, a portable electric drill, a table or portable
saw, and it doesn't take much to learn how to use a torch. Just take
one step at a time. At Oshkosh you just might see a pink single place
open cockpit low wing airplane. I was built by a young lady in her
apartment.
"Piece of cake" as they say.
Also, by the way, Bill Rewey is the most charming old gentleman you'll
ever meet and he'll br glad to help any way he can.

The Piet I have was originally designed for a Corvair engine which
froze up. (described in Chet Peek's Pietenpol book)
Ray Hill then installed a much lighter A-65 Continental. When I
bought the plane it was seriously tail heavy. I installed the
heaviest gel cell I could find, 30 # in front of the firewall behind
the engine. And, for some reason the engine mount was built 4 inches
SHORTER than the plan shows, which didn't help.

With all the talk about great flying movies, I wasn't going to challenge

However, two of my favorite scenes are from
