Here is some of the great feedback members have been including along with their
personal Contributions this year...
Over the years, the info I have received from the RV-List has
saved me thousands of dollars, and dozens of hours of time by
helping me avoid bad purchases, pointing me at vendors with
low prices and excellent support, and providing solutions to
the typical head scratchers that you run into.

;o) I can't agree with Larry and Mike more. My airplane is no award-winner, does
not
have perfectly matching hardware throughout, does not exhibit perfect conformance
with
AC43-13B throughout, has not been washed thoroughly in several years, tends to
weep a
little oil here and there, but is flown every week and provides pilot and passenger
with
experiences that cannot be equalled. I let children and adults climb in and out
of it
and tell them not to worry... there's nothing they can hurt in the cockpit. There
are no
electronics for thieves to steal out of it, no hand-rubbed paint job to worry about
scratching, and bugs are welcome on the leading edges. To those building, if you're
shooting
for a personal best or some trophies, by all means take your time and fulfill that
desire.
But if you want to fly and have fun, don't sweat the small stuff. Do your best
but don't
worry if everything doesn't come out exactly precisely like so-and-so's airplane
and believe me,
nobody will notice anyway.
I took a flight out to Cannon Field (following Larry's lead) and put up a few pix
at
this page: http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/Cannon.html especially for Corky.
Only problem I had, I've pretty much grounded the airplane until I can replace
the
starboard main tire and tube. The tread grooves are worn nearly through on that
side.
Darn... too much flying, I guess?? The good news is that hangar neighbors gave
me
two new tires. That's right, "gave". They are 15-6.00x6s which are a bit smaller
diameter than the 6.00x6s that I now have, but what the heck... the look isn't
quite
as good as what I have now but these are 6 ply tires and have nice, deep grooves.
I just need some new tubes now...

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Continental A-65 rod bearing, piston and
wrist-pin?
Does anyone have an old A-65 rod bearing and/or piston and wrist pin I
can buy for a non-airworthy need? I am happy to send a money order to
anyone having spare parts.
I want to partially reassemble my old (worn-out) crankshaft and a rod
& cap (maybe with a piston if I can find one) and then make pictures of
the finished assembly to compare with the way my A-80 engine went back
together. (see attached photo)
I need to mate these above listed items up according to and following
the Continental Overhaul Manual (and Continental Overhaul Film I have,
produced by Continental for mechanics) that we followed religiously when
the engine was being reassembled, in order to satisfy a concern about
how the rod bearings are attached onto a crankshaft.
The manual (and the film) state the casting numbers on the rods all go
"up" when the rods are attached to the crankshaft WHEN the crankshaft is
bolted to an engine make-up (build) stand and being reassembled.
Otherwise, the rods can easily go on the wrong way, if not following the
manual. When the rods are attached in this fashion, it my understanding
all the oil holes on the rod caps are facing in the same direction as
well, because the bearings have an indentation forcing the rod caps to
all "look" or face the same when attached to the crankshaft.
The attached picture shows my replacement yellow-tag crankshaft with
the rods attached. I had one observation from an e-mail I received in
regard to the video I put on YouTube that 2 of the rod caps are showing
the oil holes NOT going the right direction. But, when the rod caps are
installed onto the rod, when the rod is mated to the crankshaft as per
the overhaul manual, they all will be facing the same direction. This
may not be the case for a Lycoming engine but it seems to be the proper
way on the "A" series engines made by Continental.
When I called an A&P/IA who works on my Cessna, he read from the
manual and advised that (without seeing my crank) the rods are ALL
installed correctly, if the casting numbers are going "up." I am simply
doing this "experiment" to satisfy my own curiosity and if the rods were
installed improperly (and if I ever actually decide to sell this engine)
I want to represent it as honestly as possible and not be deceptive
(like the original seller was to me) in regard to the overhaul. My
higher resolution photos all show the casting numbers "going up" on the
crankshaft as described in the manual and the film.
After I have satisfied my curiosity and finished my photo project, I'm
probably going to have the "bad" crank and rod powder coated silver and
turned into a cup holder stand for my hanger. Should look pretty wild.

Subject: | Tailwheel cable routing |
I followed the comments by Bernard P. and others and put my lugs for the
tailwheel cable about 4 inches from center (I think, I don't have it
handy to measure right now) to get the correct throws from the TW. The
placement seems to make sense with the ratio being right, and not
getting in the way of most other parts. The problem is that it looks
like the cables will run right into or very near the aileron horn. I
didn't find any mention of this being a problem and I know people are
flying with the TW cables attatched to the rudder bar on seperate
mounts. Is there something I am missing here? Does the cable need to be
deflected downward? Or does it actually clear?

Kernal Corky (and cousin Nathan)- The CAF up in Tulsa is restoring an L-3 and they
have
an excellent info piece on the L-3 on the second page of their March, 2008
newsletter, here:
http://www.caftulsa.org/gallery/NewsLetters/2008-03%20News%20Letter.pdf
Apparently the main difference between the early and the later L-3s is that the
later ones
had wider fuselage, of course the "greenhouse" windows, and different engines.
Be sure to
scroll on down to Pg. 9 in the Tulsa newsletter to the pictures of their Defender
when they
first got it, and Tulsa is probably close enough to Shreveport that you could go
up there
and take a look at it. Or coerce Col. Jim Markle up there to go take pictures.

Subject: | Aeronca Defender (also off-topic) |
One more for Kernal Corky, this from Wikipedia (pretty complete!):
Variants
YO-58 Four aircraft with a 65 hp (48 kW) YO-170-3 engine
O-58 / L-3 A civilian Aeronca Defender in USAAC markings. Identifiable by
"D"-windows in rear, and side-by-side seating.
O-58A / L-3B Now sported greenhouse canopy, and tandem (one behind the other)
seating. Small radio mast on vertical stabilizer(identifiable by a tiny windsock).
Some were fitted with wind-driven generators, presumably to provide power to the
radios (The Aeronca L-3 had no electrical system).
O-58B / L-3B An L-3C before USAAC switched classification systems from "Observer"
to "Liaison."
L-3C In response to "field" reports, body is widened by two inches to accommodate
pilots flying with parachutes and other army gear. Radio mast is now a small tab
over the vertical stabilizer and is little more than a grounding point.
L-3D D-J model L-3s are not actual contract aircraft, but aircraft straight from
the civilian factory impressed into military service. An L-3D is merely an Aeronca
65TF Defender with a Franklin engine
L-3E An Aeronca 65TC Defender with a Continental engine.
L-3G 65L Super Chief with a Lycoming engine (4 planes)
L-3H 65T Defender with a Lycoming engine (1 plane)
L-3J 65TC Defender with a Continental engine (1 plane)
TG-5 : 250 were built as training gliders for the USAAC.
LNR : Three TG-5s were supplied to the US Navy.

Well, I am going to the Tulsa airport tomorrow (flying to Philly for the

it's at Riverside Airport (on the south side of Tulsa) anyway. One of our

I've been spending my spare time working on the Piet cowling and some engine
