The list is slow this rainy day in WV, can't fly the Piet or ride the bike so will
ask this question.
I would like to use Osage orange (Hedge tree) wood for the control stick on my
Piet. I hogged out a couple nice boards with a chain saw from a tree my neighbor
gave me for firewood, they are now stickered and about dry. I would like the
wood to stay the yellow color like the center sample which was turned today.
The other two scraps I sprayed varnish and lacquer on about a year ago and hung
in the shop window. As you can see they both turned dark orange.
Any ideas on keeping it yellow?

Skip; a quick Google search indicates that Osage will darken over time. Here's
a typical snip:
>you can see what even indirect sunlight can do to the color of osage orange
>with time if it has no UV blocker
So... I guess it's the UV that does it and if you can figure out how to cut
the UV and still keep the finish clear so the wood shows through, you're there.
And no, I don't think an SPF 50 sunscreen will do it ;o)
I would think you'd need to go to ash or something else to keep the light color
and still have strength.

Oscar, Thanks for the research, I spent some time on the web and found out
allot about Osage orange, but never ran across the info you found, thanks.
I need to find some clear covering with a bunch of UV blocker. Maybe some
of Gardiners water based clear poly mixed with SPF 50 sunscreen ;-)
