(GRC-RXD0)[ASRC]" Skip, I would suggest using white ash as my floorboard cross members have not darkened over time like the other woods on the plane. I know you'd like to use the hedge wood but don't see how you can avoid the darkening. You might be able to find a clear coating that has enough UV absorbers to stop yellowing in the coating, but it may not be enough to protect the wood. The only way to know for sure is to test each coating, a time consuming and costly process. It would be better to use a wood that would not be as prone to yellowing, such as Ash or Maple. But it doesn't seem to be very practical. You would have to keep your plane locked up in a dark room at all times. It seems that the oil-based urethane finishes have the most UV protection, but they will still darken over time (just more slowly). Personally, I prefer the look of the darkened wood. I think it looks real purdy. Check out your local woodworkers or turners guild or club. Bleaching would most likely whiten osage but that can be remedied with judicious applications of an appropriate stain. These are the folks I get my stuff from; http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=4 I've never bleached myself and I really prefer to NOT stain. Each wood has it's own unique qualities and character. Clif Subject: Pietenpol-List: control stick protection I would like to use Osage orange (Hedge tree) wood for the control stick on my Piet. I would like the wood to stay the yellow color like the center sample which was turned today. Any ideas on keeping it yellow?
