Steve,
I was fortunate to solo in a glider when I was 14. Glider flying will make you
a better pilot by magnitudes. There is only you, the machine, air, and gravity.
Congratulations.

I just did my first Sailplane flight at 5C1. Not much lift but what a great
experience.
You really have to stomp on the rudder to get the thing to turn. Very relaxing
all in all.
I may try it again in the future.

Congratulations. Was this a joyride or a lesson? What kind of aircraft was it?
If I could get in the air in a glider without somebody else's help and get from
A to B in a direct flight, I'd probably never bother with planes with engines.
My wife (who's generally afraid of airplanes) prefers gliders over powered planes,
mostly because of the lack of noise and vibration.

That is some good and use full info. Bill, thanks. Rather then have my aile
rons as shown on the prints, (you know me...) I stopped mine at the last ri
b. Then I built a different wing tip so that now the complete aileron is in
an "aileron bay". So, from that last rib out to where the tip should be, i
s about 5" or so that I lose on aileron length.
-
Sounds like, if what you say is true, that this 5" is of no concern and to
try to increase travel may not be as well.

It was a lesson, though it was kind of a joyflight. I currently don't have any
plans to pursue a glider rating, basically out of time and budget concerns, though
I would like to.
I bought a 3 flight package for a grandchild trying to motivate her to get better
grades. She took the first flight and loved it, but not enough to work to improve
her grades. So I still had two flights left. I took one and my adult stepson
took the other.

As I mentioned before, when I shortened my wings by one bay and the ailerons also,
I ran out of control when it came to crosswind landings. The wings that I
have now use a full length aileron and also one bay per wing shorter. Far better
control.

Subject: | Los Alamos Pietenpol Aerial for Begich Middle School Alaska |
To those of you following the Pietenpol Aerial project that Oscar Zuniga
donated to the Anchorage based Begich Middle School for a build a plane
project, here is an update.
Jeff Scott crated the wings, tail feathers and fuselage last weekend and
Carlile Transportation Systems picked it up yesterday. According to
Scott it
will arrive in Anchorage in about 10-days. EAA Chapter 42 reimbursed
Scott
for the expenses, just a bit under $300 for materials.
I spoke with Harry McDonald, a C-185 pilot/owner the CEO of Carlile and
he
told me he had heard about the pickup and that it would go to Arizona
first
then to Texas before being trucked to Alaska. McDonald said he was
anxious
to get it up here so we could get it done-so he can fly it.
The project has also received an offer from the University of Alaska
Fairbanks, Aviation and Maintenance division who has offered a free
O-290
engine that they will rebuild as a class project this year.
So the dream of the builder lives on, this will be an educational
project.
Big kudos to Oscar Z! And thanks to Jeff Scott from all here in the
snowy
north.
Rob

By "one bay" I assume you are talking about 1 full rib space? (about 12"-13
")- I am talking about 5". My wings are full length wings, I am just not
adding the aileron out to the wing tip.
