Shad,
What about using Pliobond as your "varnish"?
Here are a few quotes from the technical data sheet that I found for
Pliobond:
"Substrates bonded with Pliobond offer excellent resistance to mechanical
shock, oxidization, fungi, mold, and bacteria."
"Pliobond 20 adhesive can be used as a sealer, primer, water repellent, or
coater for metal, wood, plastic" and numerous other surfaces.
One of the specific applications listed is "protecting above-water surfaces
on watercraft".
Finally, it says it can be sprayed, rolled, knife coated, or brushed (and I
think I saw mention elsewhere that you use MEK to thin as needed).
I have no first hand knowledge that this would work, but the properties
listed on the data sheet would seem to be in line with what a varnish
provides. Just a thought....

Shad, if all that is holding the fabric on is glue, I would certainly
not hesitate to use the best epoxy varnish possible. I used the Stits
epoxy varnish on my Pietenpol and probably didn't use more than $150
worth on the whole plane. That is a cheap price to pay for peace of
mind. Just remember that Steve Wittman was killed by unribstitched
fabric delaminating and causing aileron flutter. This is NOT the place
to scrimp on quality.

Subject: Pietenpol-List: epoxy varnish, Non standard practice
The main reason I need a really good adheasion of the epoxy varnish is
this; The airplane I am building does NOT use rib stitching. It uses
1.25in wide ply capstrips and glue to hold the fabric to the
wings.(prototype tested to 200mph) It HAS been successful in the past
for this design with no known failures of the fabric peeling from the
wings. The cement used has been Good Year Pliobond brushed on to the
capstrips, let dry, then put fabric on, shrink and soak rib cap areas
with mek to re-activate the pliobond and roll the dacron into the
softened cement and let dry. Yes I know there are probably 1000 old
timers who will dissagree with this methood, but if there is one with
experiance in this methhod I would love to here your advise. Any who
have tried this methood and had bad results I value your input also.
But all who say this is bad out of lack of knowlage or experiance , save
your breath. Don't mean to offend anyone, and sorry if this is off the
Piet Topics, but just trying to get some good advise from long time, old
school home builders, and where better than from the oldest homebuilt
design ever.

Greetings all,
This is my first post but I have been following along for several months. I recently
purchased a GN-1 project with steel fuselage on J-3 type gear. The fuselage
was built without variation from the drawings and workmanship seems top
notch. I am a first time builder and intend to adhere to the plans and 43-13.
I intend to use a Continental without accessories. My goal is to save time
where possible and use J-3 components such as engine mount, tank, and cowl. Can
anyone here advise on this line of thinking. From what I gather I need to
be mindful of overall weight and CG. Thanks in advance and I look forward to getting
to know some of you.

Friends,
It has come to my attention that far too many people have come to the
INACCURATE conclusion that EAA's rebirth of EXPERIMENTER is for members only
or that it costs money to become a subscriber.
Neither of these ideas are true. It's 100% free and you DO NOT need to be
an EAA member in order to subscribe and continue receiving it free in your
e-mail inbox each month.
All you have to do is click on the link below, enjoy what you see and hit
the big green button if you'd like to keep receiving the monthly
eNewsletter. You will only be asked your first and last name and your e-mail
address. You won't get spammed as a result of signing up.
www.eaa.org/experimenter/issues/0901.html
Additionally, in the lower right-hand corner of the page that comes up when
you click the link above you'll find a link to a questionnaire. There are
four questions to answer and the results will go directly to the editorial
staff at EAA, not to some wonk who will compile the answers in a neat little
binder and sit on them. Your comments are very important, EAA member or
not, and will not fall on deaf ears.
Enough of you have complained about EAA's inattention to the homebuilding
community that they are trying to do something about it. This new
eNewsletter is only the beginning and your comments will help shape the
things to come.
Subscribers will also receive a free download, "Custom Aircraft Building
Tips."
We are already working on the next issue and are using the comments thus far
received to guide the selection of content for subsequent issues, so the
questionnaire input is working.
Thanks!!!
And please do me a favor and forward this on to anyone you think might be
remotely interested, even other e-mail groups.

Welcome Mark
Have you been to OSH or Sun n Fun? The fly marts there are great for
finding used parts and saving big $. Also, have you been to the
Barnstormers web site. You will find lots of deals there also.

I went to OSH and Brodhead for the first time last summer. I enjoyed
Brodhead tremendously! I am going to try and get back this summer.
Thanks for the reply.
