Cliff,
I like all your woodwork details; lightening holes, fairings and tapers etc. Very
nice work you should be proud of. Everything obviously well thought out. Nice
job.

Easy strong arm airbrake too!? :-)

The dimensions for the various parts which the rudder attaches to do not add up
If you build the fin & fuse according to the plans, then the rudder will hang down
below the bottom of the fuse by around 11/2 inches.

Hello all,
I just reviewed an old email from October that I received from Santiago Morete
in Santa Rosa Argentina. As you might remember he was lucky enough to be able
to come up here and visit with us?at Brodhead and OSH last year. He reports that
Pietenpols are becoming more popular down there and as many as 15 are under
construction as we speak. One of these fellows saw his wing hanging in the club
hangar at their airport and contacted him. They got together at Santiago's
workshop to observe and discuss the fuselage construction. They are both going
to use the Model A. Santaigo says these engines are plentiful down there.

Sounds like you're doing all the right steps, Mark. Enjoy the process, and
the Pietenpol community. You won't find a better bunch of folks than
Pietenpol folks. As much as I enjoyed building and now enjoy flying my
Pietenpol, the best part of the process has been the friends that I've met
through this wonderful airplane.

FedEx dropped off my Tony Bingelis book set tonight, and I placed an order
for William Wynne's "Corvair Conversion" last night. Should have plenty of
reading material to help me along the way.
I think I'll go ahead an order the plans tonight so I can start studying
them as well.
I got to talk to William Wynne for a bit on the phone last night, and I also
got to visit with Jim Ballew in Collinsville today. I'm having fun already.

A couple of you knucklheads are going to hear from me offline!!! :-)
It's a bit chilly in Northeastern Oklahoma today but I think I'll go put
some wood in the stove and get my shop warming up...this would be a good
day to work on a Model A engine mount!
One more thing. These recent paint/latex/stitts/etc discussions?
Great! Thanks for all the good advice. That thread was very helpful.
Cheers to all....

Subject: | Re: airplane building and mental hospitals-- YES! |
Chris & Mike,
You make a good points. Certain details enhance the effect.
I think the word "wooden airplane" adds a lot to the drive to institutionalize
the Piet builder. "According to a 1929 design" is a quaint phrase that makes
listeners' jaws drop. "The plans are from the 'Flying & Glider magazine of 1932'"
rings some crazy bells.
"Full size" and "two place" assure understanding that the project is "a real airplane."
That increases the impact of the phrase "Held together with glue"--
a good one, too, even by itself.
For those so inclined, "powered by a Model A Ford engine" might get some measuring
the builder for a straitjacket, as well. A picture of the radiator layout
should be produced to enhance the Model A effect. "A rebuilt aircraft engine
from 1946" is not bad... somewhat akin to "out of a Corvair," which brings to
mind "Unsafe at any Speed," Ralph Nader's tome. "No real electrical system"...
"hand-propping; no starter"... and "no radio" complete the picture.
The finishing touch I like a lot is, "May I add you to my list of those wanting
a ride?"
That will get a Jehovah's Witness running away from the front door as quickly as
saying, "We already go to the First Church of Satan." Just kidding there.
All my family, including a couple treated for mental illness, think I am crazy
re the Piet project.
My wife Dixie has been telling all who ask, and many who do not, that to understand
me and my flying motivation, you must watch "Second Hand Lions." For those
who do not know, the two aging uncles (Robt. Duvall, M. Caine) end it all by
flying a biplane upside down through a barn door too narrow for the plane.
I tell all in the know that, since these old boys owned the plane and the barn,
they obviously knew the plane was too wide to go through. It was either suicide
or too much tequila. Come to think of it, must be tequila, since I think
the movie was set in TX.

According to a very accomplished retired airline pilot friend of mine from
Dallas, Jim Markle has moved to IT. (Indian Territory) Corky would
be able to be the true judge in this case as he knows about these things.
Don't tell anyone but Corky married a Yankee lady from Indiana
