Never flown in there; just driven past a few times. Point #4 on the page says: "In late July during * EAA=92s AirVenture *, it is not uncommon to see an additional fifty to one hundred aircraft on our ramp or parked in the surrounding grass". Depending upon where they put the overflow, that could affect whether or not they allow landing next to the hard surface runways. I know a lot of people stop there and are treated well, however since there is some strategery involved here I would suggest Hartford (HXF) as an alternative. It is 14.1 nm on the 110 radial from UNU. Runway 18/36 is 2000 x 200 grass with good approaches and 11/29 is just shy of 3000 with useable grass on the North side of the runway. There is 24 hour credit card fuel (100LL and still 93 stinky car gas) and it is home of the Cub Club so there are lots of taildraggers (18 or so Cubs based there) and there would be less congestion than UNU. Either choice would probably be fine but I have a bias to Hartford as that is where I am based. I can do some followup with Steve Krog if anyone is interested. As my Pietenpol project progressed, I?had a keen interest in possibly trying my hand at carving my own prop. While attending OSH '07 I attended a demonstration entitled "How to Carve a Prop". I camped-out there for? 3 days taking notes,?snapping photos, and asking questions. The man doing the carving was an old-timer by the name of Jerry Thornhill. By his method, he used an electric chain saw, an angle grinder (sander) and a small orbital sander, for 98% of the operation.?He boiled it down to a fairly simple and straight forward procedure. I quickly realized that this was becoming not-so-much-of-a-mystery, and said to myself at every stage, "I can do that". I myself have completed a prop using this method and would like to share it with all of you. What I am offering?are very detailed, step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions and commentary, with many detailed pictures and diagrams (52 printed pages in all). (This is NOT a video)? The information includes a detailed material and tool list,?including sources. While putting this together, I tried to put myself in the place of a person knowing virtually nothing about propeller carving. I outline all my successes, mistakes, and specify exactly what to do and what not to do. It?is available?now, in a PDF format on a CD. The Short Wing Piper Club uses Hartford as our staging area, before our mass arrival into OSH. Last year I flew my Tripacer to Brodhead and then returned to NW Indiana for a few days before returning to OSH. On my way to OSH I had to divert due to a fatal accident that closed OSH, so I diverted to Dodge Co. Dodge Co. was a nice and friendly airport, but it was busy. It is more congested than Hartford. In my opinion, Hartford is a more laid back and accommodating field. Juneau, WI (UNU) is looking like a strong possibility because it is close and it is a straight flight up highway 26 to Oshkosh. Small groups of 4 - 5 planes, with a radio equipped flight leader, will depart UNU for Oshkosh via the Fisk arrival route. Tailskid equipped Pietenpols will use the ultralight arrival procedure. The 2009 Oshkosh NOTAM will be available in April or May. A link will be posted when it becomes available. Some questions for everyone: 1. Who is planning to fly their Piet to Oshkosh? 2. Who is radio equipped and willing to act as a group leader on the flight to OSH? 3. Who is planning to drive from Brodhead to OSH and would be willing to haul camping gear and baggage? If you know someone with a Pietenpol who isn't on this list please encourage them to consider attending. Don Emch - can you contact Frank Pavliga to see if he is willing to attend? John Hoffman or Roman Bukolt - you guys live in the area, what can you tell us about the Juneau airport? Most importantly, is the grass adjacent to the runways suitable for landing during the summer months? This should be enough to get the conversations started.
