I have really enjoyed visiting the SPOT page and keeping up on the
progress Tres is making across the country. It's almost like making the
flight with him. Looks like he is up and running again this morning cross
beautiful (but HOT) Texas. Does anybody have any information about the
specifics of his Pietenpol?
Thanks

Hey Jeff Boatright,
I noticed your name on the tentative list for Brodhead and you are
from Georgia. If your route takes you up through west TN or southern IL
tomorrow I would enjoy the company on the flight up. I am planning on leaving
early tomorrow morning . If your interested give me a call 731 267 0578.

Randy, What time do you think you will reach the chicago area? I planned on making
a fuel stop at Joliet, but there is a TFR for president oblama, starting
at 16:00CDT and JOT is right on the border of the no fly zone. I am planning
on being there around 1200-1300 CDT. I would love to fly on into Brodhead with
you, a couple of Corvair Piets will make some new noise. My last planned stop
is Poplar Grove to top off before Brodhead, only 34 miles for the last leg.

Randy Bush is leaving out of Jackson, Tn (about 100 miles East of Memphis)

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the TFRs are displayed on
http://www.runwayfinder.com. Click on the little "thought" balloon on
the top of the yellow or red circles to get the details of the TFRs.

Hey Gene,
Sorry I missed your call, was just stepping back in my office and tried
to pick up the phone but it had already rolled over to voicemail.
Tres is heading for Dayton, OH to be in the Airventure Cup - and
possibly be the Grand Marshal of the thing. Is Randy interested in
"racing" his plane to OSH from Dayton?

Yep. They stayed over at Dick Keyt's place outside Fort Worth while the
weather moved through. Dick flys the Polen Special race plane.
Apparently they tinkered around on Dick's plane the last couple of days
and now they're headed to Dayton.
> about the specifics of his Pietenpol?*
I know a few, but not nearly all, of the specifics since I'm about to be
the new owner of the plane. It was built in '79, it has a ~350 SMOH,
~750 TTE A-65 engine, cub-style landing gear, 3 piece wing, standard
airfoil, covered in Stits and dope, and a gross weight of 1200lbs.
Other than that it's a Pietenpol (ok, with the A-65 it's not
"technically" a Bernard designed Pietenpol, but c'mon...).
What else do you want to know?
Cheers,
Dan

How many Ohio area piets are heading for Brodhead? The weather doesn't look real
promising for an early am thurs departure for me. If this rain clears up before
sun up, and doesn't fog me in I should be OK. If I can get into Indiana,
the forecast looks good for the rest of the trip up. Mike C., Don E. ,are you
planning on flying up tommorow? I looked up the TFR's and it looks like as
long as I stay south of Joliet, and west of Aroura IL, I will be well clear of

Hoping for drier weathertommorow,

Greetings Dan:
Thanks for the info. I am just looking ahead to when my Corvair powered
Piet is completed and available for some leisurely cross country time. My
two sons live in Mojave, CA so the trip from McPherson, KS to there would
not be so much different than the trip Tres is currently undertaking. The
boys regularly fly their Long EZ's to and from home but they cross the
mountains on oxygen at 14,000'+ which, I will assume, is not going to be
possible in the Piet. Therefore it was with interest that I watched Tres
skirt the South end of the mountain range prior to the long Northward haul
towards Wisconsin. I will probably have to do the same or else "drive" on
the interstate up over the tall ground. Has anyone on the list tried the
I-40 route through Albuquerque and Flagstaff to know if the Pietenpol can
"get 'er done?"

Hi Tom,
Sounds like a fun trip.
When I talked to Tres the other night he did say that he did not enjoy
flying at near gross at 7000 density altitude. He said that the only
way to really get any sort of measurable rate of climb was to use the
thermals. D'oh!
Of course, with 110HP you should have better performance than a plane
with an A-65.
Cheers,
Dan

Subject: | Wire Wheel Info - Flitzer Group |
Here is some info that may be of interest to you fellows looking into
wire wheels. It comes from a post on the Corben Aces group.
Enjoy, -Wayne
"Gentleman,
A few years back, there was an astonishing amount of research on this
subject, which was accomplished by a number of members of the
"Flitzer" group.
The quest was an affordable solution for a structurally sound,
functional and light weight wheel and tire combination, that would
appropriately enhance the post 1920's aesthetics of the "Flitzer"
aircraft series, as magnificently designed and engineered by Lynn
Williams in the U.K.
I would highly recommend, that any constructor of a "Period" look
aircraft, visit the Flitzer Sportflug Verein (Flitzer Sport Flying
Association) site at http://www.flitzerbiplane.com - .
There is no fee for joining the group and membership will give you
access to all the postings, regarding, among other things, the wire
wheels, tires and the amazing brake system, designed, manufactured and
available from Ian Wasey, also in the U.K.. Also discussed in detail
are tools, fabric and covering systems, engines (STC typed,VW
conversions, COvair conversions, etc,), and about everything it takes
to build an aircraft.
The "Flitzer" group is one of , if not the most dedicated and unusual
groups that I have encountered in my 40+ years in aviation. The
wealth of knowledge, plus the willingness to share that knowledge, is
extraordinary, as you will discover, as construction issues are
resolved within the group.
Blake Palmer in Texas, is the "Webmeister" and site administrator, and
has done an outstanding job of maintaining and archiving all of the
data, email and photos for the group.
Again, I cannot stress how beneficial this sight can be to your
projects.
By the way, my interest in the Corben goes back to the early 70's. My
dear friend, Capt. Richard Anger (EAL), and was aka at the Flying
Circus Aerodrome in Bealton, Virginia. as the dastardly and nefarious
"Black Baron", would perform an amazing act in his Corben. It was of
course, a comedy routine, which was one of the audiences most popular
acts at the FCA.
The Corben was modified to "resemble" a Fokker D- VII, elephant ears
and all. The crowds loved it!! Dick did not baby that Corben, and it
just flew and flew. We members of the Circus, gained a great respect
for the Corben. We often joked that Dick "couldn't break it" and that
his A/C gave him the most "bang for the buck"!! After Dick's passing,
his son, Tony Anger, carried on the "Black Baron" tradition at the
CIrcus for a few years.
I noticed in a posting awhile back, that a member of the Corben group,
was in the process of restoring Dick's old Corben. All I can say to
the new owner, is that you got a hell of a good airplane, with a great
history, and that I am sure you will have hundreds of happy flying
hours in the old girl!!
