Just got back from the field filming the "mass exodus" of a dozen or so Piets heading to OSH. I'll upload as time allows, but we're hitting the road soon for OSH and AFAIK, I won't have internet access up there. Looks like everyone is having fun. I have to go to the shop and build more ribs. Watching those videos started a fire within to get my Pietenpol flying. I have heard Brits pronounce "Grosvenor" as "grove-nuh", but then again they also say "wuh-stuh" for Worcestershire ;o) Oscar Zuniga Air Camper NX41CC now A75 powered San Antonio, TX mailto: taildrags@hotmail.com website at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 07:42:46 AM PST US From: Jeff Boatright Subject: Pietenpol-List: Another Piet vid Last video uploaded this morning: Mike Cuy lands at B'head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baqQE_MNiT0 We're hittin' the road to OSH, see you on the other side! In the early days of my ownership of the airplane, I was not well versed on starting the A65 with Stromberg carb when the engine is warm, and I often flooded it. Now that I know how to handle warm starts, I haven't had a flooded engine or prop kickback since I don't remember when. I have noticed, in the very limited amount that I've turned the A75 while fitting the prop, etc., that it is a LOT stiffer than the 65 was. Break-in should improve that a lot but it seems like it will take a bit more arm power to flip this new prop than it did the old one. The compression ratio is exactly the same as on the 65 so I know it's the new pistons, rings, and cylinder hone job as well as all the new, tight-fitting components. Maule fabric tester, visual inspection, or just your personal preference to redo them? Also, that sure is beautiful workmanship and a great choice of finishes for visual impact. I assume you are running an inline Ford on the airplane, and is that the radiator hanging out the bottom of the cowling? Thanks. Finish is cracking in the middle of the bays, probably laid it on too thick in 1986. The underlying fabric still appears okay. The Ford is an in-line 1980 Fiesta. On my first flight the engine overheated and the coolant boiled out, spraying green slime all over me. I quickly sought a landing and the engine quit on short final. Landing was smooth (and quiet). Not wanting too many more such adventures, I spent the next couple of weeks investigating the problem, flew dozens of in the pattern flights with and without the cowling, put in various baffles, experimented with small fans, and even added tabs to the rear of the propeller in an effort to get more air through the radiator. I finally concluded that the original radiator was large enough but that the flat front of the cowling was causing air that hit it to move sideways, forcing some of the air that would have gone through the radiator to be swept across it instead. Adding a small radiator down where some air blows through it unimpeded solved the problem and the temperatures have been steady ever since. Just saw this on the EAA site. Anyone have any details?: 36L is currently closed ... I was watching on the webcam, but missed the incident... Radio report .... pietenpol main gear folded on touchdown ... haven't moved the aircraft as of 11:24am Update at 11:43am... just saw the pientenpol being towed by the tail off the runway. 36L should reopen soon. Hmmm.... did the tailwheel collapse, instead of the main? Mains looked fine on the webcam. ________________________________ Message 12 ____________________________________ Time: 05:29:41 PM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Piet issue at Wittman Field???? There is no way I can begin to capture the magic of the event, but I have put together a video to share some of what we saw. There was so much more to Brodhead... great people, great scenery, great conversation... oh well, this is the best I can do. We had such a great time we are already looking forward to next year. Time to get busy on my project. I had to break my video in two parts because You Tube only allows 10 minute clips. It is pretty "home video'ish" with my wife and son taking center stage for much of the footage, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. I accidentally put the same photo in the sequence twice... can you tell which one? It just happens to be what I consider to be one of the nicest airplanes I saw all weekend... but they were all very nice. I hope mine is worthy of sharing the same company in a few years. Thanks to Chapter 431 and all who attended for making it such a memorable event.
