I believe the orange and blue corvair powered Piet belonged to Gary Bell?? ? Great airplane. I'm wondering how the intake was plumbed - it looked li ke it was over the top of the engine - must have had a catch pan for floodi ng of carb? Which carb was used? I liked the simple installation. Hi Guys, Don't blame the 612, the 20 deg crab to West for the full 2/3 length of 36L at 12" off the deck, touching a couple times only to give the Piets behind me more room. I planted the left wheel hard on the big red circle, on the center of the run way, when GOD sent that blast from the WEST & MY RIGHT WHEEL WAS sent 12" from the edge of the runway, That entire width has got to be close to 300 or 200 feet wide, My forward distance from the red spot was 100 Ft and to the East 100 Ft. The 612 took a 4 G stress and only just nicked the tip. The prop took most of the impact. Can some person please tell me why Ken Perkins new tail wheel that I just installed showed a slight bend in the downward direction after this show stopper. If the tail was hit hard it should have a bend upward. Thanks all for your kind considerations, All joints still work and not one sore spot this morning. And thank you for those that attended my Form, will do better next time. Pieti Lowell Update at 11:43am... just saw the pientenpol being towed by the tail off the runway. 36L should reopen soon. Hmmm.... did the tailwheel collapse, instead of the main? Mains looked fine on the webcam.
Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=254989#254989

If the attachment is not there the same photo is available on my build site at: http://www.eaa1344.com/images/Stinemetze/Gear/Tailwheel.jpg It appears that a hard hit might totally compress the spring before the steering assembly bottomed out on the fuselage. If so, then continued pressure from the wheel would cause the frame to kink up causing the back end of the assembly to bend down. Does that sound plausible? Tom Stinemetze McPherson, KS.

Sounds plausible. There may be some evidence on the fuselage of the steering mech bottoming out. That would take a pretty hard hit to bend the struts. Gary Boothe Cool, Ca. Tom That is indeed Gary and Shad's Piet. Here is a shot of the engine from Brodhead '08 that shows the intake: http://www.westcoastpiet.com/images/Gary%20Bell/Brodhead2008_045.JPG The carb is at the bottom of the engine. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's an aircraft carb; most likely either a Stromberg NAS3 or a Marvel MA3-SPA. The intake is based off of the Pietenpol designed intake. Again, if my memory serves me correctly, they had a Vi Kapler built Pietenpol 'oil bath' style intake on it originally, but had issues with some joints failing (brazed, not welded). That led to the fabrication of a new intake without the 'oil bath', which would be the one you see in the pic.
Go by the over all length. So where would you add the six inches????????????? I added all the station dimensions to see what matched. Everything except the very bottom/last layout added up to the 147 3/4" ; the one drawing showing the plywood bottom adds up to 147 3/4" on the top figures and 153 3/4" on the bottom figures. I don't see how you could go anyway except the station dimensions; otherwise the design stresses would all be off. Don't think that this is a rare case of mistake; aircraft drawings/blueprints are full of them, even the type certified (Piper comes to mind). Subject: Rib jig
Well it's finaly time for me to start building so first job is make a rib jig, but I am confused. Bernie's plans don't show vertical members either side of the spars but most of the rib pictures I've seen have vertical members both sides of both spars. And without these vertical members I don't see much attachment area for the rib to spar joint. And speaking of spars the plans call for a routed 1 inch spars but I've heard talk of unrouted 3/4 inch spars and I've seen pictures of built up spars but I've never seen any plans. And if you route the spars that means the ribs only glue to the spar at the top and bottom and not along the whole face. So I am confused and would welcome any enlightenment. Starting Model A powered long fuselage one piece wing. Pilot 6 foot tall and 220 pounds so I need to keep the airplane light. Some how it's easier to reduce weight on the airframe than on the pilot. Thanks Mike McGowan Hallsville, Missouri shadetree@socket.net

Thanks Wil, I did go with each bay(station) dimensions. The side went together smoothly and everything fit. If I was to space out the 6" It would have changed the seat back and bulkhead dimensions. As it is,a tape line shows me they will fit fine. I had the day off and got a lot done. It's fun to be building. I was letting the problem of not having the lumber stop me. I went to the local lumber yard and sorted thru the spruce. The long (18/20 feet) 2X10 was the clearest material they had. I got it home and studied the best way rip it. I have a surface planner, so with a little work, was able to get my aircraft grade spruce. It's not hard to watch grain and run out. Now if I just had a hamster to use up all the shavings I made. Howdy **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! =JulystepsfooterNO115)

Mike: I'm no expert as I am currently working on my wings too, but I can tell you some of what has been passed on to me through this forum. On the additional uprights, they are not necessary, but many have chose to add these in order to have more surface area in contact with the spar. I added them as they just seem like a good idea with minimal weight gain. As for the spar options... several have used a 1" spar, others a 3/4". Some choose to route their material for weight savings (I think that is the only reason), others do not. I am using a 3/4" spruce spar, non-routed, as many have told me that this option is very strong and plenty light. Perhaps some are using a heavier wood that choose to route, or maybe a thicker piece of wood that is not as strong as other types that can be cut thinner? I'm not real sure of the advantages of a built up spar without taking another look at that chapter... surely someone will explain. I am a relative beginner, so I'm certain someone will come along with additional information. I just saw your post and wanted to reply with something since many from the group are off looking at airplanes this week. -------- Mark - working on wings Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=255065#255065

"design stresses"? The piet birds were not "designed" by engineers running calculations. They were built by a man who wanted an airplane that wouldn't cost him an arm and a leg to fly. Both AC are built like brick you-know-whats. any differences in the end points of the cross bracing by going with the longer fuselage length and stretching out the bays a couple of inches would be unnoticeable. On the other hand 6" difference might be aerodynamicaly noticeable. I would have gone with the overall length. My fuse is 6" longer than plans short fuselage. All of that behind the pilot's seat.
