Here are the rest of my videos from the second day (Saturday) of
Brodhead 2009. The day started a bit slow (see previous videos).
However, as you'll see, things got pretty busy. The crosswind got
gustier and gustier, but the planes kept coming!

hopping rides. Among others, you'll see Ken Perkins, Jack Phillips,
Skipp Gadd arrives, Dick Navrati, a WACO DFS (which I misidentified
as a Travel Air), a Hatz, and a Cabin WACO that waits & waits & waits

yeah=2C it just truns rather runny at real high temps. I did my turtledeck
in my garage on a 100 deg. (or so) day and all worked ok=2C but the stuff
was pretty runny. Just something to be aware of.

Oh yeah, it is definitely runny at or around 100F. I actually like it that way...
it is think enough to apply a good layer, but I think the thinner mix probably
absorbs into the wood a little better. All the joints I've made from 65F
to 100F seem to be fine. My main concern was the life span of the stuff as it
sits out on my workbench in a 120F hangar. From what I read, it should be fine
      for quite a while.

I was at the airport for a bit last night and the two compounds seemed to be just
fine. Thin, but no visual change.

Oh, as far as properly mixing equal mixes of runny epoxy... that is tough. I use
Jim Markle's mixing chart by weight... works great.

So here a just a few pictures:
      -
In no particular order, this is how I laid out my tail pieces. I used my ca
binet tops and laid out the dimensions using masking tape and a pen. (from
one corner of the top as a reference.)- I would then shim any tapered par
ts as needed to maintain a flat plane across the entire piece.- There is
a close up of how the tapers look from the side;- I pretty much made all
the tail pieces in this same way. -(No jig building required.)

The other item I forgot to mention in my 1 year progress report was getting
about 90% of the center section done as well. (Pic. included.)

On the picture where I just have the perimeter of the horizontal stabilizer
, you may just be able to make out some slits on the side of the long piece
held by the clamps. I am using piano hinge imbeded into the wood, the only
thing visable once assembled will be the hing knuckle. A complete walkthro
ugh will be included either in my TAIL DVD or a seperate HARDWARE DVD. (sin
ce there is a thread here on hinges, I thought I would mention how I am doi
      ng mine.

I have to return a loaner wood prop, and would welcome recommendations
on the pitch and dia. for a replacement wood prop. The one I have been
using is a 72 x 42. My engine is a rebuilt 65 Continental. With the
borrowed prop the most I could get out of the engine was~2150 rpm. I'm
more interested in climbing than cruise speed. I would also be
      interested in recommended prop builders.

      Thanks for your thoughts--Jim Lagowski

      Stan,

There are a couple of fly-in's at Brodhead every year - the Pietenpol
reunion, of course, and the MAAC Grassroots fly-in.

As an aside, does anyone have the information on when the Grassroots
fly-in is and where do I send my check to join MAAC? Since I'll
actually have a Pietenpol to fly there in September I'd love to attend.

Russel already sent the link to http://antiqueairfield.com in
Blakesburg, IA. They have an annual fly-in which I haven't attended but
      have heard good things about.

There's a Stearman convention in Galesburg, IL every September:
      http://www.stearmanflyin.com.

      Old Rhinebeck is here: http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/

A couple other places of particular note:

Lee Bottom in Ohio has a monthly "Sinful Sunday" event and an annual
      Wood, Fabric & Tailwheels fly-in:
      http://www.leebottom.com/event_schedule.htm

There are couple of Waco fly-in - one in Waco Texas and another in Ohio:
      http://www.wacoairmuseum.org/fly_in.htm

      Cheers,
      Dan

Gene; I have yet to complete the engine swap and start up
the 75. Hope to do that this weekend and will report back.

The A65 is back in Cajun country though.

Thank goodness I DON'T use my T88 mixing chart for mixing drinks!

It only goes up to about 16 ounces or so...

Wow, Brodhead was fantastic this year. I've studied this design for years now
and still picked up some new ideas last week at Brodhead. For me, this was one
of the best Brodhead gatherings ever. It was really great seeing so many Pietenpols
and Pietenpol owners, some of whom didn't even fly in, Bill Princell,
Jim Kinsella, Chet Peek and others. That was great.

I hope to actually get to do some Epoxy mixing this weekend...I wanna fly to Brodhead
      next year.....

A good sport? I don't take myself too seriously anymore...I laugh at all of it!

      Jim,

One of the biggest performance improvements we've ever seen was
obtained by switching to a Cloudcars semi-scimitar prop, 76x38. We
have been very happy with it. Best climb with old prop was ~750 fpm.
Under same or similar conditions, the new prop gives >1000 fpm. BIG
      difference.

Still at Oshkosh myself. I propped Jack Phillips as he left this

She is a pretty good stick and rudder at age 14.

If anyone wants to join MAAC, I am the contact. GrassRoots is the
weekend after Labor Day. This year it is September 11-13. It is a
giant version of the Pietenpol flyin. We will be processing the member
list next week about Wednesday so if anyone wants to attend let me
know and I can get your membership at least started when I get back in
the office on Monday. Contact me off list at this address: maac@antique-airplane.org

and I will give you the membership particulars.

| Subject: | B'head 09 Departure videos |

Here are links to videos of planes departing Brodhead 2009 on Sunday
morning. The Piets went in two groups. There was a Hatz group that
left between the two Piet groups. There's also a few others tossed
in. BTW, these vids are a little better quality than the others I
      uploaded, but still crude.

Day 3 of Brodhead 2009. Bill Rewey makes the first landing of the morning.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpIVIT81huU

Darrel Jones departs Brodhead for Oshkosh in his beautiful Stinson
      108. Darrel owns the Pfeifer Sport and hopes to have it restored and
to Brodhead sometime in the near future.

Sunday morning, Brodhead 2009. Lots of non-Pietenpols departing, most
for Oshkosh, prior to the big Pietenpol and Hatz migrations.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-UfH3-IiIA

The Pietenpols departed Brodhead 2009 in two groups (actually, I
think Greg Cardinal and Mike Cuy slipped out ahead of everyone else).
The first group included Larry Williams, Don Brewer, Skip Gadd, Rob
Back, Don Emch, and a little later, with passenger in Hawaiian shirt
(!), Bill Rewey. After this group, a gaggle of Hatz took off, and
then the second Piet group (see next two videos).
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP4-Bi8Hv4M

A gaggle of Hatz biplanes, including one powered by an inline engine
      and the Bantam.

This is the second group of Pietenpols departing Brodhead 2009 Sunday
morning for Oshkosh. I think that this group included Dick Navratil,
Lowell Frank, Chuck Gantzer, Shad/Gary Bell, Kurt Shipman, Randy
      Bush, and Ken Perkins.

But Jeff, aren't you running a C75 engine? Jim has an A65
and that prop probably isn't right for him. Did I recall
incorrectly about your engine? True enough that the C75 will
develop full rated power at 2275 RPM and the A65 at 2300, but
that's a 10 HP difference at roughly the same RPM so your
76x38 is probably too much prop for the 65. Or maybe you were
suggesting a switch to a Cloudcars prop as a brand, not
      necessarily the same diameter/pitch?

Re: Pietenpol-List: Prop ThoughtsJim, I also have the Jay Anderson
(Cloudcars) 76X38 scimitar in front of my A 65 and I love it. I went
from a Struba 74X38 to the Jay Anderson 76X38 and I absolutely love the
improvement in my Piet's climb. I don't have a VSI and haven't taken
the time to check what my rate of climb is, but it has greatly improved.
Jay is a great guy to deal with. I'll try to send a photo of my prop.

        Jim,

One of the biggest performance improvements we've ever seen was
obtained by switching to a Cloudcars semi-scimitar prop, 76x38. We have
been very happy with it. Best climb with old prop was ~750 fpm. Under
same or similar conditions, the new prop gives >1000 fpm. BIG
      difference.

        Jeff

I have to return a loaner wood prop, and would welcome
recommendations on the pitch and dia. for a replacement wood prop. The
      one I have been using is a 72 x 42. My engine is a rebuilt 65
Continental. With the borrowed prop the most I could get out of the
engine was~2150 rpm. I'm more interested in climbing than cruise speed.
I would also be interested in recommended prop builders.

          Thanks for your thoughts--Jim Lagowski

That's kind of a tough call, Mark.

This plane is highly modified. It doesn't really look like a Pietenpol.
      The wings look very short.

Here's a link to some footage of it in action:

On the other hand, I believe that BHP once built a side-by-side Air
Camper, powered by a Ford V-8 I believe. Or at least, that's what I
remember from Chet Peek's book "The Pietenpol Story". Hope I'm
      remembering correctly.

I started my message before you sent yours, but family dinner interrupted
and it didn't get sent until after yours arrived. :P

I don't have the Piet Story in front of me, but I do recall the side-by-side
V8 Piet mentioned; maybe even a fuzzy picture of the front of the airplane.
If I recall, it wasn't much of a performer....

I think this airplane pops up for sale every so often. I think I've seen it
listed at least two other times; maybe one time was on Barnstormers, I don't
recall. Anywho, it wouldn't be a Pietenpol Air Camper. It's a two-place side
by side homebuilt, loosely based on a Pietenpol, with a little Corben
influence thrown in. But not, in my opinion, a Pietenpol Air Camper; just
      loosely based on one.

But the seller has to call it something, and the Pietenpol name is well
known, so there you have it. :P

      Have a good evening,

Oscar, you're memory is correct, but nope, the prop was designed to
run on an A65 and several have been used with that engine. We bought
it because Jay had it already made and was willing to make a deal
(although he offered that if it didn't work for us, he'd swap for
what he really thought was a better C75 prop).

      The 76x38 is, let's say, an extreme climb prop for a C75.  >:-}

The Side-by-each-Piet is based on a widened Pietenpol fuselage and was
built in Florida by a retired navy man that then sold it to Mike Soucy.
It is based out of Twichels airport in Turner, Maine. I saw it listed in
the local Uncle Henrry's classifieds as well as Barnstormers about a
month ago for 8K $. Though it is not in either at the present time. He
was also selling his scratch built 701 project. So I fear Mike may have
hit upon hard times and perhaps like many in rural Maine has fallen
victim to the bad economy and the multiple mill shut downs taking place
      all over the state.

      Dave,

Ihad bought a set of cart calipers earlier but not installed.
After I saw those that Ron Harper was selling. liked much better so I bought
them. These are mechanical calopers.as was my first set.I am using a single
handle bar to brake both wheels. PF Beck's disk are made from 14 "masonarry
blades that were to be trashed, that's what he told me.

The person you want to talk to that was with PF Beck at Brodhead was Don
      Harper.Cell # 1-803-671-2983..
His hinges are machined from solid stock and very high quality. He also has
a oil separator that is very nice
at a good price. I bought a set of light weight disk brake calipers that
      PF says works great.

Jeff Boatright, What a job taking vidieo!!!!- Thank you for the memories
caught on tape.- This was easily the best fling expeiance I have ever had
.- What a rush to fly to the biggest fly in, with the slowest group of ai
rplanes.- I know I can't be the only one who was re-living his boyhood fa
ntasy of sitting in the cockpit of a F4U Corsair warming up for a mission l
ike the old series "Black Sheep Squdron", waiting to launch on a mission wi
th the rest of my squadron.- Flying with 7 other piets was a once in a li
fetime experiance.- Then to top it off I was lucky enough to fly out of O
SH with Don Emch, and later meet up with the Frank Pavilga, and Sky Gypsy,
plus Dick Alkire and my neighbor Bill See in 2 Aeroneca's.- We fought our
way across Illinois and northern Indiana.-- We got stuck for storms an
d I got a call from my wife to get my butt home (pesonal reasons), so Dad t
ook the reigns and chased the weather home in NX92GB, with Don, Frank, And
Bill the next morning.- To Bill, Frank, And Don, My Dad had the same loo
k on his face when he got home wed evening as he did after flying NX92GB fo
r the 1st time.- I think the inconvienent bout of chasing weather was the
biggest flying adventure he has had since before I was born in 1978.- I
believe he felt like he was 25 again.- The Pietenpol is truly a time mach
ine.- It doesn't have to go back 70-80 years, only to each of our own-b
oyhood fantasies where we were all the Red Barron, or at least chasing him
down.- A time when all that mattered was our dream to fly and and our unq
uinchable urdge to fly.- I look forward to seeing you all again at Brodhe
ad, though it may be several years.- I want to congradulate Randy Bush, a
nd Kurt Shipman for their debut at Brodhead and OSH.- Way to go!!!!- Co
rvairs rule!!- OK I am A little biased I admit it.
      -
      Sincerly,
      Shad
      -
P.S.- Don, Mike C., Frank P., Skipp, ANd anyone else We need to try to me
et at MERFI in Sept and show what piets are all about.=0A=0A=0A
